You need to bump that top number by a factor of five.

Really? Wow, Yeah I didn't really do much of a search for price tags, rather a search for that watch. I just happened to see some price takes and that was the range I saw. Amazing what some people will pay for a watch, and I am a watch lover myself. I guess if you have the money and you want a "one of a kind" piece.

I got the same one some time ago, with a black wristband. I like the lightweight slim design, you hardly notice you're wearing a watch.

Nice purchase!

Agree, a very nice watch. I've had it for years and still get compliments on it regularly.

I believe their most expensive one is $11 million USD.

I have seen a ton of beautiful watches digging through this thread. I am currently in the market for a new watch and was looking for some advice. Price range is around 300-$350. I like the look of a chronograph with preferably a metal band, but also really like the look of the Tissot PR100. Any suggestions at ones I should look at?

My first Swiss watch was the Tissot PRS 200, which is a great looking watch.

As you can tell, I wore it often until I sold it a few years ago. My advice is don't pay MSRP for it.

That is one of the models that I was looking at. I can't find that for under about $450 unless I buy on Amazon, but then it gets sketchy about being real or not and warrant info.

Only JUST unwrapped a very well packed Bulova and a Hamilton automatic from a vintage watch seller on Etsy. Both are from the late 60's.

If I hold the Bulova to my ears, I can hear the tuning fork humming inside... and the second hand sweeps, not ticks.

Here's the two together. I have a thing for vintage watches. :)

Hello everyone, im sorry that i do not have a watch to show in this thread, but i hope you do not mind if i ask for some advice regarding watches, i came straight to this thread because i assume you are extremely knowledgable on the sector. There are so many amazing watches on this thread.

Basically, i am 17 and alongside school i have been working on the weekends, i have always had an interest in Swiss watches and they simply fascinate me. Due mostly to the fact that my father is the same. He has a Rolex, and that has really ignited my interest in watches. I have come to the point where i want my own and i have always seen watches as an investment, i'm not sure if i am right or wrong in that logic.

I have been looking around, looking for a second hand watch, and found a few from stores local to me in London.

If you could take a look at these and give me your opinions that would be great. Although i see it as an investment in happiness more that anything, i would want a watch that relatively keeps its value.

Once again sorry for posting this here, but i know this is the thread were the watch enthusiasts go to amuse themselves.

Many thanks in advance, all the best

George.

First off, watches are not good financial investment. Most of them will lose their value as soon as they are sold. Out of the mainstream time pieces, Rolex holds their value the best because of their brand recognition and price increases.

For the best bang for your buck, I would get a pre-own sports model Rolex since they hold their value better than the dress ones. I recommend you visit http://www.timezone.com and http://rolexforums.com and do a bit of reading before making the purchase.

Very nice choices George. Out of the three, I like the Panerai but I'm partial to sport models.

What a strange thing to say. Talking quality watches, sure, second hand prices are a bit lower than when you bought it spanking new. But after that, it's all about how well it's taken care of. Buying a second hand quality watch is about as a secure placing of money there is.

If you don't agree with me, I'd be more than happy if you wanted to point me to where I can buy watches for a fraction of their retail price.

I Don't think most people are buying watches as an investment. The only people who are trying to make money off watches are watch makers, retailers pawn shops and repair shops. The rest of us buy them because we like them.

The fact that they do retain a decent amount of value is a plus.

Not sure what part you found strange.

As for pricing, I don't pay retail for new watches from an AD unless it's a limited piece or brand new model. I can buy a new Rolex at a starting discount for about 10% off list and 20% off if it's gold. New Panerais are about 5-10% off. I can pick up an Omega for 20% discount off the bat. That's in addition to not paying sales tax, which saves another 8% roughly. If you're looking to spend less, I would check the for sale section on the two forums that I provided previously.

If you bought say a Reverso from me for instance, would you not be able to sell it for at least what you gave for it?

If I bought it brand new from an AD with no discount, then no I would not be able to sell it for what I paid. As a buyer, why would I pay retail prices from a non-AD?

Lets say I bought it pre-own then it would depend on how much I paid for it and if there is a market for it. Most people are not familiar with a Jaeger Lecoultre so they may value it less. The market is also smaller so finding a buyer will be more difficult. And there's always the concern that it's a fake.

I bought a Tissot for $400 and sold it for $75 after a few years. The first Rolex I purchased was the anniversary sub LV which I paid retail. I sold it about 2 years later and took about a $1400 loss. I considered those lessons learn and never paid retail again even from an AD. I also haven't sold any since then as well. My wife's Rolex datejust may be valuable because the model has been discontinued. But once again, I would have to find a buyer who is looking for a black mother-of-pearl dial with Arabic numbers. And right now, I would be lucky to get back what I paid for my Platinum YM even though I got a discount and there has been a $4,000 USD price increase in MSRP since I purchased it.

As I mention, most time pieces are not good financial investments. Only buy if you enjoy it.

If you want to know prices on a Reverso, take a look at this.
