Filling up that 9.7" 256 GB iPad variant at USB 2 speeds. It will take

256 GB x 1024 MB = 262144 MB

262144 MB / 30 Mbps (USB 2 transfer speed per second) = 8738 seconds (To completely fill up)

8738 sec / 60 sec = 145 Minutes or (2 hours 25 minutes)

So to fill 256 GB, it will take 2 hours and 25 minutes of your precious time.

Fine, you will transfer in spurts of 20-30 GB each time, but the transfer process is painfully slow. My first hand experience in filling iPad Air 2 128 GB with 36 GB of MP3. If the files are small, the sequential transfer speed takes a significant hit. It took 1 hr and 5 minutes to transfer that amount of music.

Good luck with your purchase

What if you don't copy files from a computer to your iPad...ever?

I've owned every iPad since the 1st one and never have I done this. I download any movies/music via the iTunes App and Apple Music, all my apps come from the app store.

I wouldn't buy a 256gb device as I don't even use enough space to justify a 128gb yet but I think your reasoning above is pretty poor.

If I was going to sync something from a computer to an iPad I probably would just do it overnight as @sparksd mentioned.

Some of you can never be happy, you have to nitpick every little non-issue. I don't get it.

So why don't you just let it copy overnight? Seems a pretty poor reason not to purchase.
Seriously,
I have been plenty of situations where I had to copy lots of movies and tv shows last minute. We cannot plan these type of syncs every time. Over the period of 4-5 years of using iPads, I have realised that I need to transfer stuff at random.

You might be surprised to learn that there are other ways to transfer data and/or to fill up storage space aside from USB.

Wifi transfer is even slower. I used ASUS RT-AC68U which is a good router to transfer wirelessly and it was giving me lower than USB 2 speeds. Try it.

I look forward to more storage space. I often use my iPad, when away from home, to transfer photographs from DSLR cameras. This allows me to backup images, possibly to upload them to websites, to work on images and to delete rubbish images. The more images that I am able to store on my iPad the better.

256 GB is pointless only because of USB 2 transfer speeds. I was literally salivating when they announced 256 GB model.

But the protocol used was the only area of concern because of Air 2 file transfer experience.

You are not going to fill it completely at once. And even if you have to put a large amount of data on it at once it isn't going to take that long, and would take just as long to transfer to a smaller size iPad so the size doesn't make a big difference there.

For me 256GB is pointless because I wouldn't fill it up before the rest of the hardware becomes outdated. However there are plenty of people out there who would use it.

Yup, I'm planning on using the extra space of a 128GB model for exactly this while on trips/etc. I can make it work in 64GB, but since there is no 64GB model, I'll take advantage of the extra space.

I'm not aware of anyone that buys an iPad expecting to fill it as soon as they purchase....

Perhaps they use it to take part of their movie/music collection with them? Music goes on my phone, and I prefer to stream movies from my iMac, but I can see how someone would prefer it stored locally if travelling.

Yeah, but seriously how often do you have to copy 256 GB last minute?
Not 256 GB as I have never had a 256 GB model. But transferring even 20-30 GB is sheer pain to our iPhone 6S considering the fact that internal NVMe storage is as fast as a budget SSD.

It may be an issue for you - I won't discount that - but I doubt that it's a deal-breaker for the majority of potential customers.

Hey, you forget that the 12.9 got 256gb also, and has USB3. So.. Your point was?

Oh, and the storage on the Pro is twice as fast as the iPhone storage. So again, your point?

My point was what you quoted. Right now this concerns the new 9.7" iPad Pro model. But this applies even to iPad Pro with USB 3 because USB 3 cable with lightning connector DOES NOT EXIST yet.

Get my point?

Are you sure? The camera connection cable and the SD card cable are for sure USB3, and I'm betting the USB C to Lightning cable is also USB 3, so.. Your point is?

No I get that, what I don't understand is stating that it's pointless to take a few hours setting up a new device that you're going to keep for years simply because it will take a bit of time at the beginning.

If that's popular mentality (and I don't believe it actually is) then we've truly lost the world to mindless consumption and instant gratification.

so you're saying to buy any ipad Pro at this time is a pointless exercise?
No one is stopping you from buying anything. But this is a big thing to consider when buying 256 GB model. This transfer speed issue is bound to frustrate us at some point in our daily use.

I just felt like warning people over this issue which may feel trivial at first, but can quickly cause frustrations in time bound situations.

My point is you win! bye.

It's storage. 256 GB means 256,000,000,000 bytes or 238 GiB (the 7% difference is used as default spare area). Probably less because of firmware and pre-installed stuff. Then you have your apps. Besides, for me one reason for getting so much local storage is so I don't have to transfer stuff often.

I currently have 105 GB used on my 128GB iPad 4 (no videos, just comics and apps). When I wanted videos, I had to carry around my old 64GB iPad 3 with me, too. The 256 GB iPad Pro will allow me to consolidate and it's lighter than just one iPad 3/4 to boot.

@rui no onna

No super technicalities. I know there is that loss and actual size reported is slightly smaller. But varying file sizes will slow down transfer speeds even further. I just wrote 256 GB just to simplify for everyone.

lol.... Next time be more humble or at least do better research.
Actually very few people have USB C ports. There is no USB 3.0 (USB Type-A) to lightning cable. That would actually help with transfer issues with iPad Pro 12 inch. But 9.7 inch Pro is still stuck with USB 2 no matter what.

Is there any third party cable fulfilling the above criteria?

I don't understand the logic of this argument. I've never bought a new device and just dumped hundreds of GBs of data on to it. I gradually fill it with content over time as things accumulate. I would think this is true for most people.
