Because wireless transfers are unreliable and speed is never stable. How else do you plan to fill up 256 GB? You can fill it up by 4K videos. But you need USB or unreliable wifi to save/archive them back to iMac/PC.
I saw your signature for 256 gb iPad Pro. Now I know why you are defending the poor USB 2.0 speeds.
Even you need to talk less and avoid picking up fights. Not everyone's opinions can be same.
You go enjoy your new purchase. I will wait till faster interface is included before I make use of higher storage capacity.
Like I said, stop talking. I own the 12.9 model with USB3, I'm just swapping it for the 256gb model. Now go sit in a corner and drool like a good boy..
I've transferred files to my iPad Air 2 via wireless using apps like VLC and I've never had any issues. I have an Airport Extreme 11ac router.Wifi transfer is even slower. I used ASUS RT-AC68U which is a good router to transfer wirelessly and it was giving me lower than USB 2 speeds. Try it.
This post is about 9.7" Pro model which does NOT have USB 3.
So all this time, you were replying to wrong topic. It's ok .. Sh** Happens.
Even I have transferred wirelessly. But have you measured the throughput or transfer speed? I have. Used 2 routers. ASUS RT-AC68U and RT-AC87U. Speeds never went above 20 MBPS. That is lower than USB 2. If I went to next room, speeds were halved and transfer even stopped.I've transferred files to my iPad Air 2 via wireless using apps like VLC and I've never had any issues. I have an Airport Extreme 11ac router.
Regardless, transfer speeds are not going to vary based on the amount of storage you have; either you have a need for 256GB of storage or you don't, so I'm not sure why you're tying one to the other. Slow transfer speeds are going to be annoying whether you have 32GB, 256GB, or 1TB of storage.
No, it was fast enough for me. I don't obsess over stuff like this. And again, I don't see why you're tying storage size to transfer speeds. But have you measured the throughput or transfer speed?
Oh you misunderstood. Sorry let me explain again. Those numbers are only for 256 gb 9.7" model. Lower models will have half the time to fill up and may be slightly more bearable if you do not want to transfer more than 30 GB of data at a time. 32 GB model will not have much of an issue as it is limited by storage. No, it was fast enough for me. I don't obsess over stuff like this. And again, I don't see why you're tying storage size to transfer speeds.
I store quite a few movies on my devices because I never know what I'll be in the mood for and I don't archive my collection online anyway. Even if I did it would be cost prohibitive to stream a 6gb movie if there's not a wifi source nearby. Or impossible if neither exists.

First you pick a fight, reply to a wrong topic and make a mockery of yourself, and now you are calling my argument stupid. Edit: Now name calling. And who cares? Who is going to fill 256gb all at once however you look at it. And the 9.7 has faster LTE. As well as a faster SSD. And anyone who transfers via cable is just plain silly. No matter how you look at it, your arguments are stupid.
I have moved beyond that point. My usage pattern is erratic. Sometimes I had to go on urgent business trip. I had no time but wanted to put in as many movies/tv on my Air 2. But the excruciating slow transfer made me stop the transfer midway after an hr or else I would've missed my flight. Anyone can be in this situation. This is a scenario where small thing like USB 3 can make big difference.
But it's macrumors. Attitude here is to defend one's new shiny product no matter how objectively a flaw or shortcoming is put forward. I find it ridiculous people suggesting to purchase USB 3 adapters for device which does not even have USB internals to begin with (iPad Pro 9.7").
I wrote this Original post just as a warning but some people got so worked up with their defence.
This post is about Pro 9.7" model.
Not small minority. Whoever buys 256 gb and whoever tries to transfer large amount of data will be affected by this issue. I mean you are buying 256 gb model so that it will hold more of your movies and stuff. It is a time bound issue and it will affect at any point where one would wish the transfers were faster than 30 MBPS. I wish for it everytime I sync my Air 2. I hope you see logic in this. After using those brilliant Sandisk Extreme 128 GB USB 3 flash drives which transfer at 240 MBPS, it's never going back. That's the potential.Okay, but just so you know. I'm not trying to defend my "shiny new product". I have no desire to purchase either version of the iPad Pro, and if I did, it wouldn't be the 256 GB model. But as you say, you usage pattern is erratic. You say that buying this model is "pointless", but then describe a problem that only a small minority of users is likely to be troubled by. I'm not defending the product or Apple. I'm defending logic.

Haha. I sold 1 of my Air 2 because I wanted to buy 9.7 Pro. But I am not going to buy it because I expected it to have same USB 3 controller like 12" Pro.Funniest post all day.
I have an easy solution for the poster.
Don't buy one.
Fixed.
Have a nice day![]()

This was just a heads-up as to why it's pointless to buy 256 gb model with usb 2 controller. People may not like my opinion and have called my arguments stupid but I had my concepts about transferring data very clear. I stand by my points.
BTW 12" iPad Pro is too big for comfortable use. Tried it but couldn't get used to the size.
I am kinda disappointed with this one aspect of Pro 9.7" which is a fine evolution of iPad Air 2.
You've never been in an emergency situation where at the very last minute, you needed to download EVERY season of breaking bad, lost and freaking half the stuff on the iTunes Store last minute?! It happensYeah, but seriously how often do you have to copy 256 GB last minute?
If you don't agree, you're an apple sheep. Obviously I got told today that I was "drinking the kool aid" because I didn't feel screwed over by apple's last keynote. I guess I need to spend more of my time being angry. GRrrrrrrrYet another thread where one person presents their opinion as a Gospel we must all obey.![]()

Excellent post!First of all, if you buy a 256Gb and fill it up with 256Gb, you need to buy a bigger one (which isn't available).
Second if you only get 20MBPS you have a faulty AP, a whole lot of interference and/or need to start using 802.11AC at 5GHz.
Third, if you fill it up with say 128Gb, it will take a bit over an hour to get that onto the iPad Pro, after that what is the problem? Adding 20Gb costs me almost no time. A little speed test gets me well over 500Mbps on the Internet and in my local network even much better.
Fourth point, if the USB3 controller is your only problem, tell me how much of the time is your iPad connected to a USB port? 1% of the time?
Last point, it usually useless to sell the current generation for the next generation iDevice unless there is a really good reason. With the iPad Pro 9.7 there are several reasons: Pencil, smart connector/keyboard, 256Gb or the new display.
If all of these don't convince you because of a USB 2 controller, then just buy another Air 2.
Then why do you want a 256 GB iPad?
You can be better off with 32 gb entry level model and stream stuff from web services. That proves the point of this thread.![]()
