Not sure if anyone else pointed this out, but I doubt there are many people buying a 256GB device to add 256GB of data to it at one point. I didn't buy my 256GB MacBook Pro to put that many files on it when I first got it. I just knew I'd accumulate files that would take up lots of storage over the years, and I wanted to make sure I had enough when that time came.

I don't understand the logic of this argument. I've never bought a new device and just dumped hundreds of GBs of data on to it. I gradually fill it with content over time as things accumulate. I would think this is true for most people.
Please read the whole post. I have mentioned that people will tend to transfer in spurts of 20-30 GB at a time. Very common these days with standard music library size and add few movies and tv shows to that.

If you are not going to even transfer 10 gb then 256 GB is not for you and my original argument of 256 GB being pointless is further proved.

Have people stopped thinking objectively about Apple's products and will defend all shortcomings?

If you are happy with poor transfer speeds then power to you. I am merely pointing out that this can be a huge issue with many 256 GB users which they are conveniently ignoring/defending at this time.

Man!! I wanted to upgrade to this 256 GB beauty but sucks!

I'm still trying to figure out why 2.0 is still a thing. USB 3.0 has been out since 2010. That's forever in electronics. So why are manufacturers still including 2.0, especially in a "Pro" device? The cost difference can't be that significant.

I'm betting on a smaller main board, needed to save that space? We'll know when they do the tear down.

Storage is storage...if you're buying the 256gb model then presumably you need the space. That's an absolute.

But 'Yes'...USB2 is a pretty poor option on something that is supposedly a Pro level tablet.

Apple will get around to USB3 for the 9.7" when they feel like it, unfortunately.

I'm not defending anything. A 256 GB iPad isn't for me regardless. Definitely overkill for my usage. But in my experience most people fill their devices by very gradual accumulation. A movie or two today. Some games on the weekend. Record some videos the next day. ect. I've never heard anyone complain about transfer speeds to their tablet because they were trying to move dozens of GBs at a time. Maybe that's just me and the people I know.

But even so, just leaving it for couple of hours for a big dump (that sounds dirty, but you know what I mean) doesn't sound so bad anyway. I really don't think that most people would need to transfer that much on a regular basis.

Actually very few people have USB C ports. There is no USB 3.0 (USB Type-A) to lightning cable. That would actually help with transfer issues with iPad Pro 12 inch. But 9.7 inch Pro is still stuck with USB 2 no matter what.

Is there any third party cable fulfilling the above criteria?

I always thought that the lightning to USB cable delivered with the iPP was USB 3.0...Why did they deliver an USB 2.0 cable with a USB 3.0 lightning port?

Or you can use Waltr, and transfer GBs of movies via the lightning cable, in a matter if minutes.
You are limited to 30 MBps speed as soon as lightning cable comes into picture regardless of app used.

It puzzles many. Maybe they want to sort out any licensing or power delivery issues. They may have reserved it for iPhone 7. But this is a deliberate holding back.

Are you sure? The camera connection cable and the SD card cable are for sure USB3, and I'm betting the USB C to Lightning cable is also USB 3, so.. Your point is?
I would like to specially mention that USB Type-C to lightning cable is useless to 90% of people. Most of them do not have USB Type-C ports.

Have you seen USB 3.0 (Type-A) to lightning cable? Now this cable would be helpful for masses who have iPad Pro 12"

Your argument is pointless and holds no water. I currently have a 128GB iPad Air 2 and I've not had any issue regards transferring data. Usually any changes in the data stored are minuscule, maybe a few MB's and the only time I have to wait a long time is when I first get the iPad and have to restore it from a previous back up which is typically a one time deal any way. It's not a deal breaker.

Ian isn't the only data transfer method
With 802.11ac you can easily get >50m/s speed which pretty much cut the time in half

Plus. You don't always fill the entire space at once. You fill it step by step, day by day

What's more frustrating?

The long wait to fill up a 256GB iPad Pro 9.7 (due to USB2 speeds) or trying to put 129GB of stuff onto a 128GB iPad Pro?

That is NOT what I am asking for. There is no USB 3.0 (Type-A) to lightning cable.

Why is everyone regurgitating USB 3.1 Type-C? Most people do not have USB 3.1 Type-C ports. That cable and accessory is only for MacBooks which come with single USB 3.1 Type-C port.

If at all there is a USB 3.0 (Type-A) to lightning cable in existance, post a link here. I do not want to buy an extra adapter when a simple cheaper cable would do the same job.

I cannot be more clear than this.

Blahblahblah.. A USB 3 A male to USB 3.1 C female adapter fixes that, no problem. And since Apple has been releasing the cables over time, it's just a matter of time before the cable you want is available. But in my case, I never connect my iOS devices to a PC/Mac via a cable, so this doesn't matter to me either way.

Ok thanks for your feedback!

Who still uses USB to download things to their iPad?
Then why do you want a 256 GB iPad?

You can be better off with 32 gb entry level model and stream stuff from web services. That proves the point of this thread. :p

The more you talk, the more it proves you need to talk less. What in the hell does USB transfer have to do with the amount of storage you need? Not everyone needs/wants an LTE model, or wants to pay the costs of that kind of data connection. Think before you type.

The point that you seem to be missing is that the desire to be a digital pack rat and ACCUMULATE a ton of content on ones iPad is not necessarily related to the desire to MOVE a ton of content at once.

Because wireless transfers are unreliable and speed is never stable. How else do you plan to fill up 256 GB? You can fill it up by 4K videos. But you need USB or unreliable wifi to save/archive them back to iMac/PC.

I saw your signature for 256 gb iPad Pro. Now I know why you are defending the poor USB 2.0 speeds.
Even you need to talk less and avoid picking up fights. Not everyone's opinions can be same.

You go enjoy your new purchase. I will wait till faster interface is included before I make use of higher storage capacity.

I have moved beyond that point. My usage pattern is erratic. Sometimes I had to go on urgent business trip. I had no time but wanted to put in as many movies/tv on my Air 2. But the excruciating slow transfer made me stop the transfer midway after an hr or else I would've missed my flight. Anyone can be in this situation. This is a scenario where small thing like USB 3 can make big difference.

But it's macrumors. Attitude here is to defend one's new shiny product no matter how objectively a flaw or shortcoming is put forward. I find it ridiculous people suggesting to purchase USB 3 adapters for device which does not even have USB 3.0 internals to begin with (iPad Pro 9.7").
I wrote this Original post just as a warning but some people got so worked up with their defence.

This post is about Pro 9.7" model.
