They will reduce or eliminate the notch next year and call it the greatest iPhone ever.

It is a design element that will remain I believe until at least 2020. Although the notch was purpose built it has quickly become a design element helping to make the iPhone recognizable. I also don't see apple doing a redesign for next years phones.

There are already 2019 design leaks where they have reduced the notch.
With Apple’s evolutionary path vs. revolutionary, I think they’ll keep reducing it until it is done altogether.

I still don't consider it a design element. It's a "design concession", IMHO. It's a necessary evil, a compromise that was needed to accommodate something they wanted on the device...

There are better ways to make your device recognizable, than cutting out part of the screen... LOL

Too much fragmentation. Form a developer standpoint it wouldn't make sense to have incremental reductions in size. It will remain the same until apple can eliminate it 100%

Of course, if Apple just let the apps scale to whatever screen is being used, let it just render at the native resolution of he device and adjust font sizes to suit, that wouldn't be an issue. There is no reason why you should have to have different versions for different screen resolutions... that's just retarded.

People usually talk about fragmentation on Android, but that's due to end users having choices... Different manufacturers, different versions of Android, different form factors, etc... iOS has fragmentation too, it's just for a different reason, but the end result is the same.

Eg. why isn't there a decent Instagram app for the iPad Pro? It doesn't use the whole screen, it sits in the middle with 2" black bars on either size and it looks like you are running it through a Nintendo 64 emulator... How lame is that?

There clearly was a requirement to differentiate from other phones so by definition it's not a concession. If there was a bezel all the way across then the silhouette would look exactly like all the other phones. The notch made it recognizable as an iPhone and you can tell they were successful by all the copies that followed wanting to be associated with a premium product.

You can bet there will be the same requirement when/if it's technically possible to produce an edge to edge screen and it will be interesting to see how they meet that challenge.

Nobody actually cares about the notch and it's strange to let something so benign bother you so much.

Following that logic, I could build a car and want to add some sort of new feature, but the current tech would only allow me to have that if I removed one of the rear doors... So I could do that, and it would differentiate my car from other cars, but I am not sure that I would make that move... LOL

Ummm... what’s the most important part of the phone? The screen. So taking a large bit out of it, creating a gap in the edge of the movie or whatever you are watching, does impact the use. It’s annoying.

So my analogy of a car with one rear door missing... you can still use it, you can get in the other door and slide over the seat... but that doesn’t exactly make it optimal, just because it doesn’t prevent you from using it...

The discussion is about the notch. You don’t have to partake, if our comments bother you. You could take your own advice and just accept it and move on with your life, no? ;-)

Ipad Pro has perfected the Face ID system. Portrait and landscape, without the ugly notch. When will the IPhone follow suit? iPhones are becoming stale market wise, as the production sales indictate. People also want a smaller IPhone. My proposal;
4 Inch (New SE)
5.5 Inch
7 Inch

No Notch, Face ID or Fingerprint sensor to open it

Easy answer is they can. They choose not to.

I don't even notice the notch unless I'm reading a thread complaining about it. I love face-id - in a year it has probably failed me 3-5 times vs. 1 a day on my touch-id ipad.

Personally I prefer the notch to having an even bezel the size of the notch all the way around. To each their own though. This 5.8” phone (minus the notch and rounded corners) is perfect for me, I get it won’t be for everyone.

It's more of a principle than any real concern. What is the benefit to me, of face id? At the end of the day, it doesn't work any better than the other tech that is already out there, so giving up screen real estate and making videos and stuff look wonky because they took a big bite out of the top, doesn't seem like a good idea to me. If people get all broken up over Essential or others having a "small chin" at the bottom, why are they not equally appalled at Apple forcing them to have a "giant mustache" at the top?

How is the notch better? At least a small chin doesn't eat into the screen, removing part of what you are trying to look at?

If you are going to use an example of why something is wrong then it tends to be better if you use an example that’s actually true. My wife works with the Police. It’s her day job. In general access to suspects iPhones drives them nuts. I know for a fact that FaceID hasn’t made the task any easier.

A lot of this comes down to personal preference. For me, At the end of the day, FaceID works better than TouchID. My job is based outside. Here in the UK it rains quite a bit. When my hands are wet, or just a little dirty, TouchID would fail 90% of the time. I found it so useless that I often turned it off. With FaceID it’s such a relief as it actually works for me. I’ve also tried some of the other tech. My old Samsung phone would fail if I had sunglasses, or a hood over my head. Not so FaceID. For me it is better. But surely the notch isn’t just about FaceID. There’s other hardware in the notch.

As for watching video. I really don’t have much time for that. When I do it’s usually when I’m at home. Then I watch it on a big screen. Watching stuff on anything less than iPad Mini size (and that’s pushing it) is just too painful. Occasionally I’ll watch BBC iPlayer content. That has a 14:9 aspect ratio. If you watch that in landscape (as you do) then by default it’s scaled right up to the edge of what is then the top/bottom bezel. If you go full screen then of course some content is obscured by the notch. But doing that is totally pointless as more content is lost over the edge of top/bottom bezel. At the end of the day I just don’t go full screen so the notch isn’t an issue.

How is the notch better. That depends on your definition of “better”. For me it’s better because it makes the phone slightly less tall. When I work I’m moving about a lot. I still like a big screen but anything that can make the phone smaller (even if it’s by a few mm) just makes it more comfortable to carry in my pocket. It’s literally a pain having a phone dig into my side.

Smartphones are full of compromises, both in hardware and software. Of course the notch is a compromise. But personally I prefer it over having a top/bottom bezel however small. That’s why I bought an iPhone with a notch. Nothing’s forcing me or you to buy one.

I would like to understand why after a decade of bezels, that suddenly, the thought of a minuscule bezel is anethema to people, to the extent that you would prefer to have part of your screen missing, than 3mm of bezel?

Look, it’s not anathema to me. To me a minuscule bezel is still part of the screen missing just like a notch is part of the screen missing.

If you don’t like it don’t buy it. Problem solved.

Looks cleaner when the part of the screen is uniform along one entire edge, rather than carving a piece out of the screen itself... I can live with it, but I still think it’s stupid...

Well maybe someday you'll be in a position to call the shots but you'll be directed by the CEO. You'll have to make decisions based what that person wants yet some will think that "it's stupid". Now what do you do?

Listen to the customers and the market, rather than dictating to them, most likely...

Yeah, well, the CEO isn't some dummy even though you'd like to portray that person negatively. The CEO is there to represent the voice of the customer.

I am entitled to an opinion. I think the notch is lame, and was a lazy shortcut that was needed for a feature that wasn’t ready for prime time...
