I would like to understand why after a decade of bezels, that suddenly, the thought of a minuscule bezel is anethema to people, to the extent that you would prefer to have part of your screen missing, than 3mm of bezel?

Jesus christ. Part of your screen is not missing. The stupidity of some of the statements that fly around here never fails to astonish.

You either fill the space in and have a smaller screen and an ugly forehead on the device, or you have edges where you can put status and info as well as create a recognizable, identifiable design trait. Nobody's taking anything away from you, and if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Look how absolutely stupid that looks. Thank everything that you're not designing phones for Apple. I will never understand why having the screen extend around the camera and Face ID elements makes people scream about their screen being missing, all the while they advocate for LESS DISPLAY ALTOGETHER as the solution.

Because the bezel on the iPad is essentially one big notch. In the illustrations below you can see the notch + bezel of the iPhone XS (8.8mm) is only slightly ( 0.1mm) larger than the entire bezel of the iPad Pro 11" (8.7mm)

Yup, into one big ass notch.

Over time the sensors will decrease and notch size will decrease. See my treat about the 3.5 mm jack. I don’t think it’s possible given the technology they want to push there are compromises.

To be honest I really don't believe you, and I'm not trying to be mean. Yeah, you're entitled to your opinion but it's not based on any real information. I know you want to say that Apple and the CEO is "stupid" and made decisions that were "lame" and "lazy" but you don't have access to the same information that leads to the voice of the customer. Maybe you're not happy with the notch, and that's fine because you're "special", but the vast majority of us don't care.

Have a good day friend...LOL

Well, believe what you want. LOL

And CEO's never made poor decisions... right...

I think the one on the right looks better, especially when watching a movie. So sue me...
[doublepost=1542885303][/doublepost]So in the interest of asking an honest question, rather than the usual fanboy game of "if you don't agree with me and everything Apple does then you must be a jobless troll who isn't allowed to have a dissenting opinion" typical scenario...

If you had these two TV's before you... one with a slightly larger top bezel, vs one with a more pronounced notch in the screen... which one appeals to you more, and why?

I genuinely ask, because to me, the screen *IS* the phone. It's how you use it, view it, interact with it, etc... So while I tolerate it on my XR, as a "necessary evil", I don't like it. I see it as a poor design choice, as it takes away from what would otherwise be a magnificent screen. It's obviously not a deal breaker, but there is no stretch of the imagination where I would view such a thing as a benefit to me, or a selling point.

While having one bezel slightly larger than the others would trigger my OCD, I still think that a notch is worse, especially when watching a movie.

This argument is less about the notch, and more about how some people are so brand loyal that the will try to spin anything negative into a positive, and that doesn't make sense to me. I can buy whatever phone I want. I already had a Galaxy S9+, but I chose to sell that and get the XR because I wanted to go back to the Apple Watch... Apple makes the best watches, by far, and the best tablets... Their phones? Meh... they are "good enough" and that's about it. They work fine for what they are, but looking at that notch when watching a movie, is annoying. There is no other way to say it. I still bought the phone, and I am not bitching, per se... I mean, I didn't start any of these threads... I just added my opinions, just like everyone else.

Relax people...

There it is.

It doesn't matter what anyone thinks or what they say about the notch, you just want to push the narrative that people who buy iPhones must be "stupid", "iSheep", "fanboys" or any pejorative under the sun because they like something you don't like. You've already shown that you'll dismiss every explanation from multiple people, no matter how rational or well thought out, to push that thought inside your head that everyone else is stupid and brand loyal without actually saying it, but you finally actually said it and that's why you come off as being argumentative in a really bad way.

Yeah you're free to express your opinion but you've been dishonest about what, exactly, your opinion is and that's such a mean-spirited thing to do. Think about it.

I didn't say you were stupid, you did. I still think it looks ugly, and in my example of a flat panel TV, there is no way you would settle for a 2"x16" notch out of the top of the screen, rather than have a .75" bezel... You just wouldn't.

I am not a fan of it with Apple, or any of the Android brands that are trying to copy it. It's even more stupid for them, because they don't even have the excuse of having face id in there...

But I have been on this forum for a decade, and countless others since 1993 or so, and so I have seen every manner of fanboy and brand loyalty argument in that time.

You can claim I am an Android fanboy. Of course, the fact that I don't currently own a single Android device, and the fact that I just left Android to come back to Apple, and can provide a laundry list of annoying things about Android will probably not register with you, but there it is... Have a great day.

LOL! Another notch thread.

Most people are not bothered by the notch while others go insane:p

No matter, it is here to stay for a while, like it or not.

Who has gone "insane"?

Someone starts a thread, asks a question, people with opinions one way or the other, respond.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Which customers would you listen to though? The ones who want the larger screen or the ones who don’t want the notch?

I think there is a way to manage both. I mean, for everyone claiming that the Notch is no big deal, there is another person claiming that the XR bezels are too large and unacceptable... So take your pick...

I don't like giant bezels like the iPhone had up to the 8 and 8+ models, but a couple mm on each side, doesn't bother me if I get a bigger screen out of it, and a screen that is usable. The XR claims a 6.1" screen, but it really isn't if you remove the notch. I would rather the phone be 3mm overall longer, and remove the notch and give me a true 6.1" screen, if I had a choice...

I've been on this forum just as long. You're being dishonest and that's not a good thing.

Happy Thanksgiving...LOL

If by dishonest you mean "Does not agree with your opinions", well I guess you got me there, Hoss...

So looking at my mock ups, which tv appeals to you more? The small, but slightly larger bezel at the top, or the big notch?

Maybe if they made the notch more useful... Like adding an LED so that it blinks when I have a message, email, missed call, etc...

Other phones have that, so from several feet away, I can not only see that I have something waiting for me, but based on the color of the LED, I can tell if it is email, text or voicemail...

I know, Apple's solution is to just buy a $400 watch... Which I will probably do shortly. haha

You have a better chance of the notch disappearing than getting Apple to put any notification LED on their devices. Not counting the camera LED.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am done here.

If they made the device physically bigger, why not make the screen larger and have ears on either side of the notch instead of having an empty bezel?

That way you get ‘true’ 6.1” screen AND extra screen on either side of the notch.

Well, maybe if it the ears were always black and just used for battery, network stats and the clock ONLY...

That way when you watch a video, it doesn't look like something is missing? I think that is why it bothers me, in games or videos... Just making calls and texting and stuff, it obviously doesn't interfere with anything.

Let's you and I get Cooke on the phone and work this out, eh?

Surely the notch is already pretty useful given everything that’s in it without the need for it to stretch along the entire top of the device.

Why are they so opposed to an LED?

Well, it is and it isn't... It limits what can be up there because the ears don't give you much space. Example, how can I turn on battery percentage, so I know exactly how much battery is left, rather than looking at the icon and guestimating? Can I do that?

Because they wanted to make a distinctive phone. That’s it. If they had gotten rid of the Touch ID and made a black slab with a screen up front and a narrow black bezel above the screen (which they could have perfectly done), how would you know you’re looking at an iPhone?

This is where the problem lies.
Apple didn’t make the best phone they could make. They made a phone with a “unique identifier” , AKA the notch.
This is what happens when the marketing people take over a company, Jobs explains it well in this video.
Its very clear to me now that the marketing people run Apple, which is bad for all the people that love products with great designs.

Android isn't "copying" the notch, they're copying the edge-to-edge screen. They're proof that even without Face ID, if you're going to have an edge-to-edge screen, it can only be done with a notch at this point in time. Face ID aside, they still need to have space for things like the proximity detector, the ambient light sensor, an earpiece/speaker and a front-facing camera. Just because Android phones don't have Face ID yet doesn't mean they have the capability to stuff all that other hardware under a piece of glass. THAT is why they have a notch. Clearly they value the screen going to the edges more than a bezel to hide the hardware.

If you're going to call Android brands stupid, at least call them stupid for the correct reason.

Essential and now the OnePlus 6T have TINY notches. The Galaxy and Note Line, has small bezels and no notch. The ones that went full notch(You never go full notch), did it largely because Apple did, lets be honest...

So can I still not get a single person to answer the TV question I have posed like 4 times?

Neither the Essential phone or 6T have a Face ID system the same as Apples. If they did, they’d both have a bigger notch. Samsung also has an overall larger top bezel running the entire width of the phone. Apple could have a bezel running across the entire top of the phone, but then we’d lose the ears and the ability to display status icons and the time there, meaning less screen space for actual content. I think Apple definitely made the right call.
