I would be willing to bet that in an objective side-by-side poll of the general population--not fans with an agenda--the samsung displays would be preferred over the iPhone.

Not sure about that.

The iPhone displays colours more accurately. Samsung's displays are very vibrant; something I happen to like, but others won't necessarily. Colours are over-exaggerated. I love that though.

With Samsung you get a choice, unlike iPhone. If you like vibrant, as I do, you can get that. If you don't you can change it. You do know there are color options right? None on the iPhone.

Where is this screen on the iPhone again? :D

I know all about that yeah. The colours are very vibrant no matter which option you choose!

Even on full brightness the iPhone 5 can't get colours like the S3 on its' dullest setting :p

The thread's title says it all. There's been so much hype about the flagship Samsung devices lately, and Samsung truly seems willing to give this competition their all, but for some reason the SG3 and Droid II both still have what appear to be dim, slightly washed out displays with odd colours and bad viewing angles...

Agreed with brightness, the default auto adjust is way too dim. However having brightness at max or high is enough and there is no problem. When you started going on about washed out colors, odd colors and bad viewing angles I just stopped reading your post. Have you even seen a SAMOLED display?

I was just playing with one yesterday at Best Buy. Even in indoor lighting and the brightness maxed (I checked) the screen seemed dim and dingy. The colors are certainly extreme but they're not as bright, so somehow they didn't seem more "vibrant" to me. Also the screen in general seemed grainier...not sure if this is partly due to the pentile tech, the lower ppi, or the lack of brightness.

To the poster who said he showed all his friends the note II and they were "blown away" by the screen - either they were reacting to the size (and I'll admit I'd like a bigger iPhone) or they are just suckers for crazy kool-aid colours and don't notice the overall quality.

Or also, your friend isn't just going to come at you and tell you "boy, that screen sure looks over-saturated, I don't like it one bit!"

That really says it all. If you don't actually have one and only "played with one" I find it hard--no, impossible--to take anything you say seriously.

Why you feel offended that Apple is being bested is just reality. It is not your fault. It is Apple's fault. Deal with it.

Can anyone just tell me why 2 years ago the 800x480 pentile AMOLED screen from the galaxy S was equally as good as the iphone 4 retina display. There was no distinct winner

But two years later the general consensus is that AMOLED are horrible disgusting looking displays. This just annoys the hell out of me. You guys are brainwashed by phony tech sites and the current trend. AMOLED colors and contrast look so much better to me than LCD. Black is pitch black and everything just looks washed out on LCD displays. Even the best ones.

Well up to you guys if you want to have "accurate" colors which I think is phony anyway.

If somebody uses a device in store I don't see why they can't comment on it...that makes no sense.

The people saying they prefer the iPhone screen today are probably not the same people who preferred the AMOLED screen back then.

I've tried several phones with AMOLED screens, and none of them looked as good as an IPS display. Blacks were great, but that was it.

I played with a GS3 in the store and found it to look dim and dingy as well. Besides that, the white balance is way too cool, and colors don't look right. Maybe with calibration it would look better. I've never seen one that has a custom calibration.

I had a Galaxy Nexus last year, for one week, and felt the same about it. I even used the same term as you, dingy, to describe it.

Here is my post from a year ago.

Edit: Oh, and I can still tell that the GS3 has a Pentile screen, and I find that annoying too. Maybe at 1080 that will finally become unnoticeable.

You guys are probably judging the look of the OS itself too without even knowing it. Android has always had a matte look to it while iOS's look has always seemed more glossy/shiny. Yes the iPhone is brighter, that's obvious. I'm not talking about brightness.

I wish we could see both OSs on differ devices to judge equally.

From all the hype I've gotten the impression that the SG3 is supposed to be more advanced than the iPhone in almost every way, yet the screen still lags behind as far as I can tell.

Yeah the screen is the one area the iphone trumps the galaxy S III.

But the screen is just one part of it all

Well said.

The upcoming Galaxy S4 will have a 400 ppi display that will be a really beautiful example of the latest in display technology.

If one dislikes Android & Samsung that's fine. No brand is for everyone. It's the competition & choices that I celebrate. Personally I like iOS & Android. They each have their pros & cons.

Absolutely, all this raging and hate just spurs competition and innovation :)

People can argue about amoled vs lcd's forever. I can tell you that for me lcd's are far superior. It's not even close. The difference is night and day. Especially with respect to whites which are crucial to me and many others. It's a shame because if the Note II had an IPS display I'd probably get it. The good news is that we should have IPS phablets in the States by Q3.

the Galaxy S3 has a slightly lower bill of materials than iphone 5. I bet samsung could make or buy a screen with the quality to match the iphone 5 but it would cost more and cut into their profits

galaxy s3 does other things people care about the iphone doesn't

Have you used the note II's screen. It doesn't have the major drawback that people list about AMOLED and thats pentile. The note II is rgb non pentile.

We can, you see there are other manufactures of android devices other than Samsung, and they use high quality LCD's. The HTC One X or Droid DNA both have the best screens of any phone and they both use LCD. While agree the technology of amoled has more potential and is in fact more advanced, the color reproduction isn't on par yet with LCD. Though when it does, which it will eventually, you'll get the best of both worlds, ultra dark darks and accurate colors.

Honestly if they did that I'd be way more tempted buy something like the Galaxy S 4 this year. I do want a bigger screen on my phone - the big things holding me back are integration with the Apple ecosystem, easy servicing and support, resale value, and screen quality/general build quality (I just like the non-plastic materials better, and yes I know they have disadvantages as well). But aside from those factors I'm actually curious to check out both Android and WP8, which *looks* best of all the mobile OS's.

Euh you ever actually compared them? SG3 is superior (let alone the Note II screen) on some area's.

Why do people always find the need to take their own opinon as one that goes for the entire world?

I have used the Note II display. Amoled is amoled. Poor whites. Can't stomach it.
