With this, straight barring an artificial border in the OS

Keeps the same screen availability that isn't dedicated to notifications, provides the notifications their same home, and because of the OLED display it essentially eliminates the notch appearance entirely. Content doesn't travel above the bottom of the notch anyway so why appropriate the distraction it can cause. And yes I have and use these phones daily and it's still constantly there to me. Seems like a valid compromise for everyone.

that looks even worse

Why you say that?

Because it's a fact. The iPhone X has a 5.8" screen. The iPhone 6-8 have 4.7" screens. You're comparing the screen in the X to a made up screen that doesn't exist. The only 5.8" screen Apple makes is in the X/XS, and they're notched. So when you compare a 5.8" screen with a notch to a 5.8" screen without a notch, that second screen exists only in your imagination. Therefor your argument is invalid and your measurements don't make sense. You might as well compare it to a 5.8" screen where the sensors magically appear and disappear as needed and it spits out Skittles when you're hungry. Because that screen is also completely imaginary. Apple didn't take the 4.7" screen and simply add a notch.

Or if you want to do this the easy way, there are loads of screenshots out there comparing an 8 to the X. The X has more vertical space, even without the notch area, than the 8. If you remove the notch area, the leftover screen is still taller than the screen in the 8. This is common knowledge.

S9 has a 5.8 in screen :)

Genuinely wondering (I'm sure this has been asked before).

Here’s the real answer.

Eventually the notch will go away. When you take a screenshot with an X, it shows the full rectangular shot without the notch. I think this implies that the notch will become smaller and smaller.

Think of it this way, IF had they become notchless now with a forehead, this would alter the aspect ratio and resolution. When tech is ready for a full screen notchless phone, apple would have to do an iPhone 5 type situation, change the resolution and aspect ratio. Apps developers would have to update their apps so they don’t look weird and with black bars.

Essentially right now, Apple is using the resolution and aspect ratio of the future notchless phone (or reduced notch). So when it does become a full screen phone, no apps will need updating.

Oh, so you're using a Samsung as the basis for your nonsensical redesign (even though I clearly said APPLE doesn't make a 5.8" screen)? I think we're too far apart on reality here to have a productive conversation. Your posts didn't make sense from the beginning. I gave you every opportunity to explain what you were trying to say, but that has just pushed us further apart. Even with a picture, your posts just make no sense.

I think you might be on to something. I don't even mind having a conversation with an anti-Apple person. As long as they're presenting a well thought out argument, conversation can happen. In this case, I'm not seeing the well thought out argument.

You just like to muddle the discussion with your incoherent rant.

You still haven't answer what is precisely wrong with the image I posted :p

Or you are just trying to get out of the hole you dig yourself.

Sorry didn’t mean to interject.
You were posting well thought out arguments and he was just posting one word responses with a emoji smiley face.

Your an expert on incoherent rants.

Enjoy your note 9.

No worries. I was getting to the same place you'd already arrived at. You just showed me a shortcut! When I learned we were talking Apple screens vs. Samsung screens, I was pretty much out anyway.

Why? You have no answer? :p

All I'm asking is if you have two exact 5.8 inch screen except that one of them has the top part partially cut out leaving the side ears.

Which one shows more vertical content after accounting for the status bar?

Don't tell your mind has no ability to work out this simple answer? :p

He started by not knowing the the difference between display size and surface area, trying to convince everyone otherwise.

Then moved the goal post to his latest theory.
Blaming the notch for the lowered icons on the status bar, if he had an iPhone he would have realized the status tray was lowered because of the rounded corners of the display and not the notch.

He keeps claiming to be happy with his note 9.
But his obsession with apple and the iPhone proves otherwise, he literally can’t stop posting about it.

Cheers

You accuse me of incoherence and then further engage me for more “answers”.

Your funny.

I’m afraid I don’t have any simple answers that you might understand...perhaps when Samsung clones Apples notch you might finally have the simple answers your looking for. Until then....

Ps: At the very least I’m not obsessed enough to start drawing iPhone Xs on pieces of paper.

I would say enjoy your note 9 but it looks like your unable to because you really want an iPhone X’s or an iPhone X’s max.

You are still evading and not answering the question :p

The Notch is a distinctive feature that makes the iPhone X look different than every other smartphone on the market.

When you are a luxury brand selling the most expensive and luxurious smartphone in your company's history, you want it to be instantly recognized and it's owners want the credibility that recognition brings.

To be fair, your drawing and theory have already been shredded in this thread. You were unable to explain it in a coherent manner without using imaginary screens, made up numbers and moving the goalposts. It's obvious at this point that math, and geometry in particular, aren't your strong suit. I don't see why you want to toss logic out the window and keep this going. There is no magic formula that will give you the necessary sensors without creating a bezel or sticking them in the screen when dealing with a screen that goes to all 4 edges.

What point is there in poking one particular member repeatedly for answers that are already posted? That's just starting to look like harassment to me.

Considering the amount of android phones that have the notch nowadays, you might want to switch the argument to the lack of chin instead of the notch.

How did you shred the point I have made? By not answering and pointing out what is wrong with the diagram? Instead you just go rant about other things :p

If you are game enough point out specifically how the diagram is wrong instead of beating around the bush.

I don’t think it’s right for you to attack another posters taste, if he prefers the notch over a bezel and chin that’s his prerogative. who are you to say otherwise?

“Apple fanboy” you mean macrumor users?, you seem angry for no reason at all.

Were you interested in the iPhone X’s max over your note?
Read my post properly...

Not anymore every android phone apart from Samsung phones have a notch now.

As I said, in the same post you quoted in fact, you're inventing screens that don't exist, you're making up numbers, you're assuming screens are the same height when they're not, you've demonstrated a lack of critical thinking, you don't understand the fundamentals of geometry and mathematics in general and you keep moving the goalposts. You claim Apple is taking up space they don't need to. The onus is on you at this point to prove your claim. Previous attempts have been failures. We're now on page 7 and no well thought out argument has been put forth. My gut says not to waste my time waiting for it.

I've answered your questions AND pointed out what is wrong with your diagram. And not for the first time.

Do you think the iPhone 11 will have a notch?

Do you think the iPhone 11 will have a notch?

I have high hopes that they will get rid of it, but at the very least they will put way more effort into mitigating it's presence until they can. My guess is transparent OLED and bone conduction, not sure how they'd keep in the stereo function but I'm sure they'd manage to think of something. It's probably been in the end stages of prototype, possibly even at design for manufacture stages by now. Late 2016 they probably couldn't get the idea there but I'm sure the idea has existed and we just had to embrace the notch for now. I'd be surprised to see a company with that much developmental power and influence not have this close to being consumer ready for next year.
