Just read an article on ComputerWorld.com (http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9149927/FAQ_What_we_now_know_about_the_iPad?taxonomyId=12&pageNumber=3) that talks about the removable SIMM card for use in other countries. Any thoughts on the possibility that the next gen iPhone will also have a removable SIMM card and the ability to use the same card in both devices since iPhone users already pay for a 3G data plan?

If they pulled that off and incorporated Flash like the new promos and this article (http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplatform/2010/01/building_ipad_apps.html) suggest, this may be a device worth owning. Multi-tasking would only be an OS update away (which I really believe OS 4 will have).

Sure we're still not getting the integrated camera, the second dock connector, and still have to deal with low capacities (but what about iDisk storage?), but I'm sure we'll see some of that in the next gen iPad.

Any thoughts?

Ok then, clearly you have convinced yourself that the iPad is worth the money (to YOU of course) and worth carrying around WITH the iPhone in your pocket. To me that´s just ridiculous and so we shall agree to disagree. You´re fine with that? :)

I wasn´t talking about time periods of surfing, but now that you asked, absolutely! I have browsed with it many times a lot longer than 30 minutes. I was mainly talking about, when you´re on the go. I wouldn´t ever take iPad on the go, ´cause it can´t be carried around like the iPhone, in the pocket... only then I would take it on the go, if it would have full OS X.

Do you want to know what I find so annoying about this thread is, I don't think that you are ridiculous for not having a need or want for the iPad. We are different people with different needs and wants. What I find so annoying is that you don't respect that just because someone else's view is different than you own, doesn't make that view ridiculous, it just makes it different.

Okay, so some of you think it's a flop. Fine. That's your opinion.

You don't want one. Fine. Don't purchase one.

However, please try to understand that some of us will be getting the iPad because it serves a need or want for us. We see it's potential in our daily lives and want to capitalize on it.

My wife would love a 3G enabled version. It's perfect for her needs. What will hold her up, is waiting to see how the 3G support is implemented here in Japan. Hopefully the cost will be reasonable. If we were in the states, it would be a done deal for her.

As for me, I may wait until the second version since I have an iPhone 3GS. But then again, I can really see the potential use for my commutes with the iPad. Plus being able to browse the web from a convenient device anywhere in our home would be nice. Definitely beats a Netbook for my needs.

What I do find interesting is the buzz from friends and co-workers that I am seeing around here concerning the iPad. Never before have I seen such buzz over a product like this. I find that very interesting.

No. My opinion isn´t that it isn´t just me who doesn´t need this device. My opinion is this:

NO ONE NEEDS THIS DEVICE!

Only some people think they do! That´s my opinion and you have to respect it! ;)

Now can we agree to disagree about that? :)

Yes, because it´s total opposite of the iPhone success = TOTAL FAILURE

And that isn´t expected from Apple. That´s why the buzz! Understand now? ;)

Okay, Bob. I want a decent-sized handheld touchscreen device for the living room to save me carting around my MBP. What do you suggest?

Why??? Are you lazy or something? Or is 499-829$ just pocket change to you to throw away? Then I can understand it.

But if you really want something like that, why don´t you get the iPhone 3GS? You´ll get so much more value for your money!

I guess I've got money to burn...

I've already got a 3GS, but the screen size is an issue for medium-long browsing sessions.

Any more ideas?

I think you´re wrong. Hahahah! Breakthrough device? Get real!

War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.
iPad is Revolutionary. :D

I just said what I think in my opening post. Are you blind?

Your opening post was absurd, so why should he or anyone believe you were serious?

Well good for you.

Not for me. And home I browse with my iMac. Why don´t you browse at home with your MBP? What´s suddenly so terrible about to browse with it?

Any more ideas?

Why don´t you buy PS3 + some games or something with that money? Maybe some toilet paper, that´s even more useful money spending!

BobHail, why do you keep persisting? Going on and on...
Are you actually trying to convince people who have already decided to buy or even consider buying the iPad to NOT buy it?
Why do you care? You're not swaying anybody. You're ranting.

Maybe I need to be a lot more clear.

By buzz, I mean folks who are planning to purchase the device. I am shocked at so many who are looking forward to getting one in their hands.

Suggest that you try to be a little more open-minded in this case. :)

Pardon me? Value? Did you just say that the 3GS provides more value for the $?

LOL! Let me save us a ton of time and do the math for you:

Cost of 2 years of iPhone 3GS in U.S: $2,359 +tax
*based on 16 gb iPhone 3GS and average monthly bill of $90. For most users, this number is much higher.

Cost of 2 years of iPad 3G in U.S.: $989 + tax
*based on 16 gb, 3G equipped and $15 a mon limited data plan. Everyone I know would be able to get by on 250mb per month easily.
The most it could cost you if you needed unlimited 3G, would be $1,349 + tax.

So explain your wild assertion of greater value.

That's your style. And that is fine.

However, some of us would like to be more mobile when doing our browsing around home.

Why don´t you browse at home with your MBP? What´s suddenly so terrible about to browse with it?
Given a choice to browse with a 1.5 pound device with a 10 hour battery life that is convenient vs a MBP15, which I have, which is heavier, has a hinge, shorter battery life, and I can't interact via touch. Gee, I know which one is for me. The iPad wins hands down.

Very good point.

And for those of us who may get an iPad for around the house and do not need a data plan, it is even cheaper.

Do you have one lamp in your house that you carry around from room to room?

My iPhone bill is about 30€ per month. And that´s unlimted 3MB/s data. I´m sure you have monthly payment for your phone too?

250MB plan for the iPad is a Joke. Best internet browsing experience with limited data!!! Gimme a break guys! You need the unlimited data for the "best browsing experience" period. And that was about 30$ or something?

Why would you say this? Very narrow minded you be on this issue.

Being able to roam about your home (and any other WiFi enabled areas) is a great way to create and share ideas with others.

BTW, I only have 8 Macs and 2 PCs -- most of which I use regularly. So I am not tied to one computer at home.

Why the hell would you need to carry your internet everywhere at your home? Are you that addicted? Are you browsing at the same time while doing the dishes?

Man you people!!! :) Insanity.

No you don't if you connect via WiFi.

Most folks have WiFi setups in their home. Plus there are many free/open WiFi places these days. Easy to get that wonderful unlimited Internet browsing experience without 3G. :)

Come on BabHail, try to think out of the box. I know that you can do it. :)

Well I´ve already stated my opinion about getting this just for home, even when you already have a Mac or two there. Read my earlier posts please.

I usually listen to podcasts on my iPhone while doing the dishes. :)

As for the Internet, I guess I'm a serial user.

I have.

There's always hope that you'll broaden your perspective and see what can really be done with the iPad. How it's a wonderful device to augment existing computer setups for many folks. :)

Trust me. If by a miracle it somehow someday turns into usable device. I will change my opinion.
