I was giving my wife a detailed explanation, because she thought I ought to buy the MBP and I said until I know for sure the keyboard won't fail, I'll not buy it. She has a better understanding, though she doesn't think I ought to buy the razer. I was having a few issues with that before returning it. Not defects but usage, for instance the keyboard backlighting does not illuminate the secondary values of the f-keys and numbers, so in a dimly lit room, its harder to see what key to press for certain values. On the plus side, it does have f-keys :p

Personally I think they probably have fixed the keyboard, but cannot say so openly as that would confirm there was something to fix in the first place and they will lose all the court cases.

I just do not ever want to go though the keyboard nightmare again. I will have to wait and see, PLUS I need bootcamp to be up and running for the latest OS/MBPro. When new operating systems emerge it takes a bit of time before they have bootcamp working with it. This is a must for me!

Have a great weekend.

Better give it a year

Not needed.

With forums like this it will only take a few weeks or a month at most!:apple:

There's a number of articles that came out yesterday stating that and I agree, though I'm already waiting. I'll see what the teardown show and then decide, if not, I'll buy a Dell or Razer and forgo the MBP altogether. I'll not wait for 2019. Basically I'll bank on the known for the present rather then hope something occurs in the future with apple.

For my work, windows is a better option, it makes life a lot easier then macOS, which is why I was leaning towards a windows laptop

Most of my work has to be via Windows and only reason for thinking about buying a MBPro is just plain love of the hardware. But after the keyboard thing, my love for the MBPro is "tempered".:(

You misunderstand me - the problem can take a while to show up. The reports for the previous models were not showing up after a few weeks or a month - only after many months!

Maybe so but mine was defective right out of the box. Several keys did not work after a couple of days, also the scraping sound some keys made . . . . took Apple weeks to address and finally they replaced the whole unit but had the same problem with keyboard just days after it arrived.

I can be patient as I have a Thinkpad P51.

The year 2019 will be the last of this revision before Apple embarks on a redesign. This itself would make it worth the wait.

More of a reason to wait just one more year to 2020 to be honest. Very tough to make a purchase when an all new redesign is right around the corner. That's where I was in 2015.

It's less of "the last revision of the current gen MBP will be the most refined" and more of "the 2020 MBP will eliminate every issue that the current gen has and have huge improvements as well." People would likely want to rid their hands of the current gen keyboard and Touch Bar.

I don't disagree with your other points, but I thought that would be worth mentioning.

I'm excited to see what the future holds for the MBP.

The argument of you should wait because something better is coming just around the corner is sad and confusing.

You only live once, make the most out of your life, and that doesn't include waiting.
Your summarization is probably the best :)

You can wait until the cows come home, but then there will always be something better around the corner. I do think the 2018 is a very fine machine, not perfect but very fine. I now need to weigh the positives of what it brings to the table against the negatives. I may be able to hit an apple store this weekend and if they have them out on display I can start playing with them and see how I feel about the keyboard.

This is from someone that just discovered a keyboard issue (my period key) over the past few months on my 2017 RMBP...

I am not happy that Apple is still using butterfly keyboards on the 2018 model, but I am buying it anyway.

They are offering a 4-year replacement. So, with that kind of guarantee, nobody should be worried. You will get it fixed for free if there are any issues.

The 4 year replacement is for the 2016, 2017 models. People should not assume it applies also to the 2018 model. It almost certainly doesn't!

Last time i’ve checked the MBP 2018 is not listed in the extended program.

Performance-wise the update is quite substantial, but I’m curious to see what Apple will have to offer feature-wise in the next generation. Something like faceid would be pretty cool, for one.

It took a change.org petition and a couple of class action law-suits to make them cover the 2017 keyboards.....

And the same thing will happen with the 2018 keyboards if defective -- perhaps moreso since this was something Apple should have fixed. I am not worried.

Well if it experiences the same problem, I doubt they will be able to turn you away saying "No sorry, your model has the fixed keyboard". That would be one heck of an awkward conversation :).

Exactly! Apple HAS to stand behind any future keyboard failures with these butterfly keyboards

Well, the real question is, if they don't stand behind it, can you afford the time it will take to argue with them to get a fully working machine again ?
