Lack of FaceID I get, I prefer FaceID myself. But don't let promotion dissuade you from an Air. With an M2, you won't notice the 120hz vs 60. And with an M2/8GB RAM, and up to 1TB storage. you got the same specs the previous Pros had.

Lol, why would M2 have any impact on whether refresh rate will be noticeable?

120Hz vs 60Hz is always going to be noticeable and a huge differentiator between Air and Pro.

I guess physically having to reach for a TouchID button. But FaceTime has its own issues, especially now that it's on the long edge. For example, accidentally covering it up while holding it in portrait.
Still way better than in landscape

I call bull. People think they can tell, but most really can't. They just spec chase. And you realize Promotion is not always displaying 120hz, right? It onl goes to that if the content needs it. Most of the time, the screen is running at 60hz.

60 Hz is incredibly noticeable when everything else is 120Hz. And of course it’s variable refresh, it’s not 120 static, but scrolling and dynamic motion kicks it up to 120Hz and it is absolutely a must-have unless one is deeply ignorant of small detail.

That's a little disingenuous, websites absolutely do not always show the same information on devices of every size, let alone 11" vs 13" iPad.

Here's an example of a dutch clothing store, where on the 11" it goes to a mobile-optimised view which only shows two pieces of clothing, compared to a 13" view which shows up to 6 pieces of clothing AND a side bar for filtering on the side.

Note: these screenshots are simulated on my Mac in Safari, but I know this is how the website looks on an 11" and 13" iPad respectively, because I tested it in the store myself. This is approximately how they compare. On this specific website.

Tested in portrait mode, the results might be different in landscape, but I'm not sure about that. Either way I always browse the web in portrait, so landscape results would be irrelevant for me personally.

For those with 11/13" iPads that want to test it for themselves, this is the site: https://www.debijenkorf.nl/herenmode/broeken
10.5 iPad Pro in landscape (as nature intended) and looks fine to me.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on buying my next iPad yet. I've spent so much time looking at them in store, watching reviews and reading the forums here.

I'm heavily leaning towards the 13" now as the 11" doesn't seem that much of an upgrade from my 10.5. At least it's not twice as good, which is what the prices are now. 13" seems a 'better deal'.

I really, really want to love the Air, which does have a lovely screen too, but seeing the inconvenience of touch ID in that button, rather than on the screen, and the lack of Pro Motion, are putting me off. I've come to realise that little irritations don't necessarily wear off over time, and paying more (but factoring it in as a monthly fee for the convenience) might be the better solution for me...

What are other 10.5 upgraders doing/thinking? The specs of the Air are good enough, and the price is a bit more reasonable, but I keep getting stuck on the lack of Pro Motion.
I own both a 10.5 Pro and an M1 12.9 Pro. And I'll be upgrading to an 11" if/when I upgrade because I find I use the smaller Pro a lot more than the big one, despite it being slower, and having a lesser display. I use my iPad almost constantly in my lap - if you usage looks different, YMMV.

You are in landscape mode. His post clearly stated he uses Portrait mode so landscape is irrelevant. I also use Portrait mode so landscape is irrelevant.
Why would you guys purposely neuter the ipad by giving it less horizontal space and then complain about what can fit in that width? I think most users use iPads in landscape with a (keyboard) case. Hence, Apple moving the camera to the edge so it's on top when landscape.

It’s not like using an iPad in Portrait mode carries a criminal charge or something. There are several use cases to use it in portrait mode like long-form reading. The 13” is just better in terms of content not breaking to a tablet version no matter the orientation.

And even in landscape mode, the 11” still suffers from time-to-time from breaking content into a tablet version in my tests in store. The entire point here is that it’s not really something a user has to deal with on the 13”.

Aside from all of this, I do like the 11”. It’s not that it’s terrible or anything.

A small contribution... between the 13 and 11 there is a difference with the split screen function... the 11 emulates more of a cell phone while the 13 emulates the desktop version... I think the 11 is better in this sense. And the movies for me the difference is not that much because of the space that the black stripes take.

And yes, even the 13 though it is lighter, you feel the weight that gets tired in minutes. So I agree with some contributions: 13 if it is more desktop location, mac replacement, etc... 11 if it is more of a complement, media consumption and is more portable, no doubts.

Using more space on 11” with these apps and website I get the iPad version and desktop site. I went from a m2 12,9” to m4 11”. I miss the bigger size sometimes and the magic keyboard is worse on the smaller one. More so on the scandinavian version compared to English as ÅÄ letters are half the size. They should have made the return key smaller (that’s full size for some reason).

With that said I wanted the smaller one as I want to use it as a tablet more and the bigger one was annoying. More annoying than the smaller one is with the keyboard at a desk for me. I use it all day at work on my desk and as a tablet at home.

Not sure if I totally understand you, but are you saying that with "more space" on the 11, you get a similar experience with Safari and other iPad apps as on the 12.9"?

I can't really do a comparison anymore but in most cases yes. In default mode on the 11" putting two safari windows next to each other in landscape you get two iPhone versions. If you enable more space you get two iPad versions. I'm not saying the visible part of the website is the same (it does increase though) but you get the iPad version of said app in more cases. You can however also enable more space on the 13" and the difference will be bigger again. But with more space on the 11" it is a lot better in landscape with a keyboard than with it disabled.

Here are some comparisons I made a while back. You get around the same amount of content on 11” More Space as the 12.9” Default zoom. Of course, text, etc. is smaller with More Space.

I'm terribly sorry, but I can't seem to tell the difference by looking at your screenshots.

The images are all screenshots of split view mode (same webpage open on both sides).

As you’ll notice, the amount of content on the 10.9” More Space and 12.9” default zoom are very similar. Both show the desktop layout of MacRumors forums.

The Air 5 reports a 1373x954 resolution while the Pro 12.9 is 1366x1024 so they’re very close.

Meanwhile, split view on 10.9” Air 4 (which doesn’t support More Space) shows the mobile layout.

Ever since enabling More Space, I’ve always gotten the desktop layout on Air 5/Pro 11 like I do with 12.9 particularly when in landscape mode. So far, I have yet to visit a website that shows mobile layout in More Space.

Caveat though, everything is smaller. It’s more or less on par with the iPad mini so it doesn’t bother me.

I couldn't tell and your screenshots showed the viewpoint being the same. That's why I asked. Thank you. I actually use my tablet in the portrait position more than landscape.

11” is one app only iPad, more space, split screen, stage manager, all unusable imo.
Sounds like you’re really describing the iPad Mini. I wouldn‘t say the Pro/Air 11” is unusable for those activities, but I agree it’s uncomfortable and can feel not worth the effort.

A vote for the 11”

YouTuber are constantly switching sizes and then rationalising it based on like one situation where it worked well for them, like a work trip or something. There's also like a dozen YouTuber that were recommending the 11" the last time around and are now suddenly switching to the 12.9", talking about how realistically it's just as portable and yet you get so much more usable space.

YouTuber's opinions are really useless for this. Especially if they don't go into any details. Like on this forum we're all going into far more detail about the practical differences between screen sizes than he does. The reason he prefers it is pretty much just... Because it's a little smaller? And that made it better on a work trip? Because the 12.9" was somehow too heavy to take? It's very over the top, the 12.9" is portable enough to take comfortably anywhere, and fit on any table, even small tables like those on airplane seats.

As soon as you're using the iPad in the Magic Keyboard, it honestly doesn't matter anymore, and you might as well get the 12.9/13" for the added size. The size difference is really only relevant if you're planning on holding the iPad in your hands most of the time. Because in that case the difference in weight and comfort is definitely noticeable.

the other thing about trying in store is that it has the security tag stuck to it. The 13" really in quite insane to feel in person. Its pretty straightforward for me...if youre actually using it for work in any way or for drawing at a desk 13" all the way. for handheld or media consumption while NOT at a desk then 11"
