I bought the Mini to be used as a couch-surfing, media consumption device — essentially, a NON-work tablet. I have a 2018 12.9 that I use a lot for work and it is does a great job at that. But, it’s connected to my work email and work apps, so when I use it for fun, work’s not too far behind (if I get an email or work notification).

I bought and returned an 11” Pro a while back with the same intention - to use it as a “fun” device. But, it quickly became just a smaller “work” machine, so I didn’t see the benefit of keeping it.

Now, with this Mini, I went with the 64gb model so I wouldn’t be tempted to load it up with apps and would be forced to use it as a media consumption device. And, so far, it’s been fantastic at that! I leave the 12.9 plugged in at my desk, and when I’m feeling lazy, I grab the Mini and head to the couch - and leave work in the office. I was tempted to go with the 256gb model, but think the 64gb will limit me to the “fun” stuff.

I do have the jelly rolling “issue”, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It’s not there under normal uses and I can only see it when I actively recreate it - so, a non-issue in normal use.

In short, the new Mini is great at what, I believe, it was designed to be - an easily transportable, comfortable-to-hold, media consumption, latest-tech-containing, couch companion device. I’m keepin’ it.

Bit like the people who complain about backlight bleed when they have the screen on a black screen with the backlight at 100% while sitting in a pitch-black cupboard.

One of the best post I’ve seen on the topic. I also loved the one about people not making VHS videos of percieved defects back in the day and posting them through letterboxes.

Nonsense.
A really disappointing post Shanghai

Some of you are falling into the trap of piling on folks who are legitimatelly impacted by it.

If you aren't bothered by the jelly, please just leave it at that and don't start a pile on to the folks who are bothered by it.

Does my screen look yellow from this photo I took of it and posted on a forum, which has likely compressed it, and that you are now viewing through your own screen which also may or may not have problems.

Look I’m not denying that it exists. I’ve seen it in the videos. For those who can see it/or are find intolerable then they should take it it back and get a refund. It’s that simple and if someone makes a funny post I will respond.

Back when kindles first started coming out with front lights there were similar threads about taking your kindle into a dark room and putting the light to maximum level and seeing if the lighting was even across the screen. I will admit I did a fair few of those experiments myself but didn’t get up in arms about the results. The post that I responded to reminded me of that.

Folks saying "just return it" -- yes - obviously (or don't buy it at all).

The frustration is that, if this is an issue for you at all -- there's almost no hope for another 3 years here.

I just don't see what is served by laughing about this issue. It comes across as laughing at others - making fun of their position and is ultimately just dividing the community (which we have plenty of already).

This forum has an immense problem of myopic thinking.

So many just get incensed and lash out and then start making of people if there's an issue that's perhaps big for others -- but not themselves.

I appreciate where you're coming from... as I too had been advocating for respecting different conclusions on the jelly scrolling issue.

But having said that, my conclusions are just that... mine. If someone pokes fun at my decisions, they're free to do it. I am not defined by what I think about a consumer product. Many times during my years here at MR, I've been been accused simultaneously of being an Apple apologist and an anti-Apple troll... and those are responses to the same post. :D

There are many things that Apple does with their products that I dislike but many are accepting of. I have long ago stopped trying to get others to see things my way. I'll express my opinion, clarify where needed, and leave it be.

The difficult truth is, if few people see things my way there is no chance of getting Apple to make the changes I want them to make.

Honestly, we should really just refrain from normalizing "poking fun at others" on here.
Too many different points of view, use cases, different nationalities with different cultural norms.

And, crucially - "poking fun" -- while I can personally enjoy that, I also recognize it adds nothing, while risking division amongst folks.

Simply put - the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

Well, it is unfair to deny the opinions of those that are genuinely impacted by the jelly scrolling under their normal use, but is is also unfair to deliberately exaggerate the effect and then pronounce it is total garbage.

I can understand exaggerating the effect to demonstrate it others, for example by repeatedly rapidly scrolling up and down (who actually does that?), but this will inevitably invite criticism (or mocking) that this is not normal usage.

Of course, there is a big grey area between normal usage and exaggerated usage - what is exaggerated for one person is normal for another.

The answer is to take people at face value and live with the drawbacks of that.

Not to map ones own opinion onto someone else's, or their stated use cases or feelings about something.

I was thinking how much some of the current threads reminded me of some of the early Kindle discussions and being called a liar because I didn’t see the defect on my Kindle and being bullied about posting a photo of mine so someone could claim they could see what I couldn’t (knowing full well that photos don’t necessarily capture what you see with your own eyes). (Anyone remember how TV shows that showed old CRT TVs and computer screens clearly showed “rolling” although most of us couldn’t see it in real life?)

I haven’t been able to spend a lot of time with my Mini 6 yet but I’m hoping to do a Procreate tutorial or two today. So far, I’m happy as a clam in chowder with mine. I’m using it bare-screened for now but I’ll be putting a screen protector on it soon. I just can’t deal with the fingerprints and it’s going to be used outside at our camp so a screen protector is a necessity. USB C is a big plus for me because my Surface Go 2, Galaxy Note 9, and both iPad Pro 11 (2018 and 2021) are USB C. Pencil 2 is another plus.

Serious question, what does posting about it on these forums actually change or accomplish?

I have issues with OLED/PWM but it's not like I can do anything about Apple switching to OLED on most of their devices. Hence, I just do what's within my control. I currently have a couple of iPhone SE2s, Air 4, 2021 12.9 and now the mini 6. If the next generations have OLED/PWM, then I'll just skip them. Maybe buy a few more of the older devices on clearance for backup.

Respect goes both ways. Yes, some people are sensitive to the jelly scrolling but claiming that everyone is and that the mini 6 should be recalled and implying that those who don't see the jelly scrolling are stupid Apple apologists? ?‍♀️

In the past I would have said "not much" -- but...
I have noticed casual mentions in lots of Apple employee circles of things that surface here.

More people see this stuff than we realize.

I don't think anyone is making fun of people who notice it in normal use, they're making fun of people who, if The Verge hadn't mentioned it and then hadn't had to record their screen in slo mo to recreate it, would probably be happily using their new iPad, blissfully unaware.

I'm not sure how we're micro targeting the folks who saw something at the Verge.

Many have pointed out that they instantly noticed this in person -- including many who aren't bothered by it but did admit they easily detected it on the device, in hand, on their own. (no Verge needed)

Exactly! It’s called the power of suggestion or group-think. Yes, there are those who actually see it and have seen this jelly effect for years on various iPad or other devices, but, there are also those who have never seen it. As @rui no onna pointed out earlier, respect goes both ways. To be told that “you are only seeing what you want to see,” is not a sign of respect. To post passive-aggressive comments is not a sign of respect.

Ultimately, this thread is on topic for those who have decided to keep their mini 6 for whatever reason(s) regardless of whatever their perception is regarding the… OMG!… jelly effect. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I’m about to send my mini 5 to Apple for trade in of $225. How big of a deal is this jelly issue really? Is it something minor that you have to look for it to notice during regular usage? I’m still leaning towards getting the device.

Can't really go by other people's experience. It either affects/bothers you or it doesn't. Don't trade in your mini 5 until you've had a chance to test the mini 6 yourself. Make use of Apple's 14-day return policy if you can't go in-store.

Why don't you do the trade-in when you order the new Mini? Apple will send you the trade-in kit when they ship you the new mini, so that you have a good period of time (at least a week) with the new one before you have to send in the old one. If you decide you don't like the new one, you return the new one within 14 days and cancel the trade-in on the old one. This is what I always do.

This is a perfect case for doing exactly this. Or at very least go to a store and check it out before your trade in your old one. It is impossible to predict whether the jelly scrolling is going to bother you personally or not. You are going to get opinions all over the map on this forum.

Try it out at a store browsing and reading text like you normally would. Don't go looking for the jelly, if you see it you see it. If you don't, well, congratulations, you won the genetic lottery! ;)
