I took a look at the Mini 6 at a local Best Buy just to see what the hoopla about the jelly scrolling is all about. I looked at a few websites--Macrumours was one of them--and one PDF book from internetarchive.org. I did NOT see the jelly scrolling! I was set out to find it, but did not!

Also brought the Mini 5 with me to compare with the 6. The screens were about the same, but the upgraded features of the 6 def made it superior to the 5--by a large margin, I'd add. I will probably pick up one during the holiday season.

Still can't believe the WiFi only 6 isn't around $499-$549 for 256gb...
Prices got crazy on the Mini this round
Yes, for 256GB cellular, with folio, AppleCare, and tax it is over $1000! For a baby non-Pro screen!

I just couldn't do it, so got the 64GB version, as I have to have the cellular (actually, I have to have the GPS function, but that is part of the cellular chip). I just hope I can work with 64GB.

I can’t see it but I think that’s just because my eyesight is so poor. I was thinking this morning about why the small text on the iPad mini doesn’t bother me and why I stick to smaller text sizes on my kindle. It’s because of my crappy eye sight. I have one long sighted eye and one short. The vision in the short sighted eye is really quite poor so the long sighted eye does most of the work. So I think having small text works with the long sighted eye.

I can imagine for a pilot the jelly scrolling would be a deal breaker. As you can’t be distracted by the screen when flying a plane.

How much do helicopter pilots use iPads? Wondering if having to control both the cyclic and collective leaves less opportunity for iPad use.
My only knowledge of helicopter piloting is watching videos (some pretty fascinating videos), and controlling helicopters appears a lot more challenging to me.

They use it quite as lot looking at aviation articles. Same for planes. It can get very sophisticated looking at various aviation articles showing their usage. I was joking earlier because I thought with the planes vibration would make scrolling more difficult.

as a regular iPad owner, I use mine in landscape
like 90 percent of the time.

i Wonder if owning a Mini would change my habits. Anyone find themselves using one iPad in one orientation more than with another iPad ?
I have generally used all my ipads, including the new mini 6 in landscape 95% of the time FYI.

Had mine a couple of days now.

I'll preface this saying I also have a 2018 11" iPad Pro and a 2021 12.9" M1.

After all the talk of jelly text and lower quality screens I really didn't know what to expect. Thankfully I am not disappointed - I am generally quite demanding of screens/frame rate etc, I bought one of the first G-Sync PC monitors in 2015 or so because I wanted higher framerates and adaptive sync, and I love the 120hz screens of the iPad Pro's.

I've concluded the Mini 6 screen is...fine. Not amazing, not terrible. I have to really focus to see the jelly text, otherwise I can quite easily ignore it, possibly due to what I'm using it for (see below). The colour gamut is clearly lower than the LCD Pro screens, and pales compared with the M1 iPad but that's to be expected.

The biggest downer for me, unsurprisingly, is how jarring 60hz is after a few years with 120hz. Scrolling, simple animations from swiping/multitasking, wow, it's like going back in time. I AM surprised how much I notice it - moving between iPad Pro to my old XS, I never really notice the difference, must be due it being a pretty small screen - but the difference is stark with the Mini.

But I'm really not bothered by the 60hz, I'll be using the Mini in a deliberately pared down way. Chiefly reading books, manga, maybe the odd game (not a big iOS gamer, but I've played a LOT of Slay the Spire for years now) and carrying it around the house listening to podcasts. Equally, if you're not used to 120hz, 60hz will feel as smooth as it ever was.

I use all 3 iPads diffently, both the Pro's entirely in landscape with Magic Keyboard. The 11" LTE is for on the go/at work, never at home. The 12.9" wifi exclusively at home. The Mini is a nice handy device to tote around the house caseless, and used mostly in portrait. I did get cellular with the Mini for when I'm not taking the 11" with me.

I really like the design of the Mini, it’s great in the hand.

I just ordered Applecare+ for my mini 6. I’m scared because it seems fragile. The mini 5 seemed like it would survive a drop on a corner. I’m not sure about the new one. I’m also going to try to get a tpu case when they are more available.

I took it out as soon as I set mine up. Still got apple care on my mini 5 too.

I just subscribed to the month to month version myself. The mini doesn’t seem particularly fragile but I can see myself dropping it pretty easily. The price for AppleCare+ is less than for my 11” iPad Pro which I’m dropping when I sell it so I come out ahead.

I've already dropped my mini 6 three times trying to read using just one hand.

Now I'm reminded why I like the Paperwhite and Libra H2O much better than the iPad mini. The lighter weight (just 150-200g) and large bezels make holding them for hours on end much easier.

similar to your 'every' - you haven't looked at 'every' model. Perfect eyesight here, no jelly scrolling.

So please just stop

So why would Apple say this is there (jelly), and is “normal behavior”

That’s literally a quote from them

Perfect eyesight isn't an issue. It's a thing in the brain where some notice it and some (like me) don't. Also, the way you use an iPad can affect what you are seeing. Plus, screens may have slightly different tolerances, especially if they are made by more than one vendor.

Well then you disagree with Apple…
You know ....the company that made it
I agree with @mizzourah and so I guess I disagree with Apple too. Apple has a self-interest in claiming that all Mini 6 iPads exhibit this behavior. If Apple were to say that "only a few units are affected" that would cause everyone who has a unit exhibiting this behavior to run out and exchange them... maybe even multiple times.

OK - well I’m not going to debate whether Apple is “publicly lying or not.”

That just heads down conspiracy road and I just don’t think we can use that for debate points here on the forum
