To be honest I know more piss poor people with iPhones than anything else.

I have some pretty wealthy friends and coworkers, that love their Blackberrys. Even a few have have Androids.

To be honest, many of the managers and other employers in my company still use BlackBerries.

I spend 5 days a week with middle and high school students. Most of them have smart phones. And most of those that have smartphones have iPhones.

I've always thought of a status symbol as something that sets you apart from others. So if more smartphone owners have iPhones than other brands, then I don't think having an iPhone is a status symbol. It makes you in the majority.

I ask them why, and they all just love blackberry, and are waiting on BB10.

I still know a lot of iPhone users too though.

Over here most blackberry users from back in the day still carry one cause of BBM but they also have another smartphone, either iphone or galaxy variant.

Blackberry used to be a status symbol. If you carried a BB people knew you were in business and were important enough to warrant getting communications at all times of the day.

BB never really was able to take the next step (until a more full featured experience...web, apps etc) hence their demise.

People are still lining up to buy the iPhone.

I haven't seen a line for an Android phone last longer than a day. In the end nothing much has changed. Apple appeals to the design conscious and those who tend to be design conscious are mid to upper middle class.

When your well to do friend has a bunch of Apple gear sitting in a nice home it brings status.

You don't get status with a plastic phone with a humongous screen and batteries that pop out when you drop them. I wouldn't pay $50 for it a year either.

:apple:

Your username suits you. You really are nuckin' futz :)

I think the biggest thing is the overall build quality and design. IMO nobody else matches Apple in details and all the little things that might not be flashy at first but customers come to love after owning.

But how does that give you status? It's one thing to argue that they make solid hardware, but another to argue that owning these products gives you status.

The same way a BMW gives you status. Its nice looking, it drives well, its expensive and not everyone and there brother can get one.

People always say Apple products are a status symbol meaning like if you have it, you're just telling everybody you're rich.. Why is that? There are Android and Windows 8 phones that cost $200 on contract (same as the iPhone) and there tablets that cost more than iPads. Why is Apple seen as a status symbol?

Also, why is it that Apple products have a higher resale value than Android handsets 2 years down the road?

I'm not asking rhetorical questions to make a point... I just want to know. Thanks.

it is only a status symbol if you make it out to be one. its a phone -period.

Anyone with good credit can lease a 3-5 series for $500-600 bucks

Let me tell y'all something, the one and only reason I bought the iPhone 5 is because of the superior battery life and that's it. Apps crash alot just like android, phone is just as nice as some androids, iOS imo is just like android per se

Thanks for proving my point, not everyone has good credit and can afford 500-600 a month payment.

I didn't buy my iPhone has a status symbol. I think society these days and pegs the iPhone 5 as a status symbol because of the reasons I've stated. In the past two or three years sure iPhone have become more accessible to people with discounts and subsidizing but its still a highly sought after phone that not everyone can get.

On the other hand I also don't believe that outside of these highly specific forums dedicated to Apple products many people don't "think" about these things like we do. We do it cause were Apple fans and they make great products! ;)

It's not a BMW though, it's a measly phone that anybody can get now.

If anyone thinks a iPhone is a status symbol, they have a lot to learn.

Dalbir god damm why you have to answear with a question ? Even though it was not direct to you...

Anyway instead of "whats wrong with that?" Will you mind to post your opinion in that regard ?

Thanks.

I saw the new BlackBerry OS videos and though they had some neat and unique concepts. You said that they're trying too hard. They've fallen way behind in the smartphone race so they need to try really hard. I just asked for clarification. I don't know why you're getting so defensive.

But that's the difference. The iPhone is not anymore expensive that any of the top end Android or Windows phones. And a lot of people do own them.

I consider the iPhone to be a lack-of-status symbol. It's the default, much like Windows is the default on computers.

On computers, I more often than not see Apple laptops to be a "dumb person's PC", as you pay through the nose for what is essentially a facebook machine. Having said that, if you're in an industry that uses > 10% of your CPU daily, and your main app isn't Safari, I take that back :p

:apple:

I'm a graphic designer and photographer, I've worked in the creative field for about 10 years now and none of Apple's mobile devices appeal to me (except for the MacBook Pro if you want to classify it as mobile).

Apple's iPhone does look 'nice' but in my opinion, its trumped (badly) by the HTC One X and One S (especially the special edition in white).

Also, youre misleading readers by suggestion that all Android phones are plastic and the batteries fall out when dropped. In defense of the battery, at least its removable without voiding warranty and the fact that it *may* pop out when dropped doesn't actually hinder the phones capabilities, not exactly a strong argument either.

To be perfectly honest, I've had apps crash on me more on my iPad 3rd gen than on my Galaxy Nexus. Both cases are rare, but one does do it more often than the other, and it's not the one you'd think based on the "it just works" mantra people keep saying.
