haha, right; how long will you keep this up? also, try my idea, about less open tabs per window, and multiple windows; then you can see every site you have open. change does not have to be difficult
Disable tabbed browsing then. Good luck using 2 Safari windows on 1440x900 scaled res.

is this addressed to me? i usually have 2-4 windows open... i cycle thru them with command-`, or sometimes switch to another window from the menu bar.

for me, it's easy to group things together, but have windows with viewable text in the tabs.
I see your point now, I misunderstood the original comment. I thought you meant to have multiple windows side-by-side which is hard to do on smaller screens while displaying normal amounts of content.

i spend a lot of time on a 12" macbook. having 2 safari windows side-by-side, each with multiple tabs, on this screen would be insanity (which, fwiw, i manifest in other aspects of life... but not my mac use) 😆

I am using Linux a lot as I am developing software for devices which use Linux as GUI component and I am using Linux with KDE for my development work.

Yes, KDE can be customized in nearly every way. But on the other hand a lot of things are unintuitive and sometimes confusing. That every applications seems to have its own file dialogue (which is not a KDE problem) makes it even worse. And its hard to imagine to implement "save as pdf" worse than firefox in Linux implemented it.

That is the reason why I switched tom the Mac over 10 years ago, I like the "power of Unix", but I hated the Linux Desktops. With a Mac I had then best of two worlds.

The Jony Ive candy apple anorexic text adventure ui has a few more years of changes left in it to work through before they transition to what’s coming next. I’ll be glad to see this one go.

All things come to pass. Not too long ago, it all looked like this:

Best looking version of iPhone OS/iOS imo. Simple, clean, excellent built-in apps (iPod was awesome), and better dock than iOS 4-6.

I don't see the 'wasted space' issue. In fact, for me Safari takes up far less space than it did, they condensed the title bar into the navigation area, so it feels less 'busy' which I prefer. But then again, I don't do 'tabs' so I only have one tab open in Safari anyway.

I'd still love the option to disappear the title/navigation area entirely as I've been using the touch bar to do all the functions relegated to that area anyway.

Posting this in here because it's Big Sur's fault (I'm on Sierra).

Check out this new Chrome icon. Look how small and dumb it looks, including and especially in the dock. Needlessly shrunk down to accommodate a needless white background box. Not to mention double-boxed when you select it in the switcher.

Heterogeneity in the icons is a good thing; this isn't a tiny phone screen where the icon grid needs to be clear and basic. I knew right away this would happen. People are going to have an ugly hodgepodge of standard and nonstandard icons at first, and then (assuming every developer does an update), an ugly, shrunken, boring, and over-standardized lineup of same-looking icons that'll be less visually differentiated than before.

The iOSification of the desktop marches on, for its own purposes at this point, it seems.

And the main function of an icon is to be easily recognisable in a lineup of other icons by shape (and secondarily colour).
I used to love macOS apps for their carefully crafted icons of various shapes that helped instantly spot the app I was looking for. Now everything is dumbed down, squished into boring rounded corner rectangle. I wish Apple went other way around and macOSified iOS bringing shapes into icons, not iOSified macOS.
Check out this new Chrome icon.
Looks like washing machine.. horrible. Just for sake of being Big Sur "compatible". I start to appreciate my work Windows 10 task bar.

Given that limited screen estate, I am quite surprised that you appreciate that many Big Sur elements are now larger than they used to be, while some text is smaller.

but that's my point; my day-to-day work on the macbook has not changed in any way from when i ran catalina. i do the same things, use my apps in the same way. just... the windows look a little different, and frankly, the speed and stability seems better. the GUI changes are not significant enough to disrupt anything (altho control center gives me a less-cluttered menubar; a good thing).

Yeah. In the end I will upgrade to Big Sur sooner or later, and probably after initial pain I will adapt. I will probably wait for 11.1 first though.

So far I've had few issues with BS, but I accidentally ran across something I didn't expect. I was having a problem with one of my usual websites with Safari so I opened it with Chrome, and was stunned by how much easier the site was to read in Chrome. BS must have changed the rendering in the latest version, and definitely not for the better. My next task: try this website out in Chrome.

update: now using Chrome, and the website isn't washed out and is MUCH easier to read. I guess I'm going to have to migrate all my regular reading over to Chrome.

The most difficult "upgrade" to swallow is Safari. If you have more than one tab (which is common), the UI uses 3 times more space than before.

I went back to Catalina and couldn't be happier. Don't know what to do when I buy an M1 Mac.

these posts always seem... odd. an operating system should, first & foremost support one's apps, work, etc. so, am amazed when someone reverts to a previous OS over a cosmetic issue.

again, what i do: 2-4 safari windows, with multiple tabs (there's even some logic to each window). i can cycle thru them, and see text on each tab. simple!

Windows XP.

The exact same criticism was levelled against XP back in the day.

Now it's seen as onr of the best desktop Windows releases ever.

I remember when Microsoft was accused of copying Mac OS X's "Aqua" interface for XP's "Luna" interface.
