Usually we expect more than we get from Apple.
Exactly.

My prediction, if I was forced to bet on it right now:

iPad 8 identical to iPad 7 but with A12.
iPad Air 4 will have the Pro 11” design but with a 10.8” screen. A12 and 3GB RAM.
In my opinion that is most likely.

Maybe If they still use the same chassis in Air 4 as in current Air 3, we could get slight bump in specs along with bigger display. Anyway, my point is that we are no going to get all the goodies in one year and definitely nothing like Pro 2018 renamed as Air like it is in the wildest rumors I've seen.

BTW, iPad Pro 11” cases on amazon are already claiming compatibility with the “new 10.8” iPad Air 4” in their descriptions.
I saw those too a week ago. Looked to me they were just Pro 2018 cases and it was added in the description they would fit for 10.8" Air 4, so seemed like like they were not custom build for it.

I'm hoping for an iPad Air 4 to hit the price of the Air 3, currently £456 for the base model on Amazon UK. If that were eroded, £350ish would tempt me to upgrade. I must be a very undemanding user because 64GB has been fine for me on the Air 2.

Yes, and that’s would certainly support the rumour/assumption that the Air 4 is using a near identical chassis as the 2018 Pro, just as the Air 3 is the 2017 Pro.

It seems like the iPad Air 4 is going to get a BIG update at tomorrow’s event! The same design as the iPad Pro (without the Lidar camera), probably a newer processor (A13?) and Touch ID either under the display or in the home button. Oh and new colours, according to a new report the Air 4 will get a new blue and green colour options.

I think the Air 4 will be the go too iPad for most people if the rumours are true. The LIDAR camera most people won’t use or even care about at this point, a faster processor will only be worth it if you game or use Photoshop, LumaFusion editing app and so on.

The Apple Pencil 2 may even be compatible with this new Air 4 alongside the Magic Keyboard! That would be cool.

Or they just made a wild guess. That's what I think myself. :)

Maybe, but typically case makers do get a heads-up about designs, you know. How do you think there are always cases available at launch for new deices that fit perfectly?

If those rumours are true, it 'should' stay at the same price.

It will certainly give me something to think about! I’m due an update from my 2017 iPad Pro, however I’m not sure how I would feel going from a 12.9” Pro too a 10.8” display.

I have seen a couple of less known leakers suggest the Air 4 will get an A14, but there is no way Apple would put a better chip in the Air than the iPad Pro, unless Apple update the iPad Pro at the same time. I doubt that Apple would update the iPad Pro at tomorrows event, considering they updated it around 6 months ago!

Don't ever doubt Apple, remember the iPad 3 & then iPad 4 just a few months later...

That is true! But didn’t they do that because there was an issue with the iPad 3? I remember having the iPad 3 and being annoyed when the 4 came out just months later.

So do you guys think that the new iPad(s) will be released tomorrow or just announced, and begin shipping a week or two later?

Sure but i’m pretty confident those who get heads-up have signed nda. I don’t they can just announce something before Apple. I bet this is also a reason why no one can actually say for sure what is announced tomorrow!

I think this is a gray area. There are always cases before announcements. They can't always just be lucky guesses.

There are some leaks about the iPad Air that it’ll be $599 starting at 64gb. What do you think about that? Maybe it won’t be as good as we think.

That price and base storage sounds accurate to me. I wouldn’t expect them to price it beyond $600 for the base storage, and I would expect them to keep 128 GB as the base storage for iPad Pros only. I think if that’s the price, they should be giving it decent specs, but obviously leaving out the bulk of the Pro features.

It sounds expensive to me. If it starts at 128gb make sense, but $599 sounds expensive for 64gb. Let’s wait and see if the specs will worth it.

The specs will definitely be the deciding factor for me. I have 64 GB on my current iPad and I still have over 20 GB of free space on it. Of course, it’d be nice to have an extra buffer, but I’d maybe consider doing 64 GB again. We’ll see.

Usually we expect more than we get from Apple. Of course that is half the fun :)

Agreed on all fronts. The rumors about this new Air have gotten wild. I think we are looking at a shift to the “all screen design” of the Pro line with no real change in performance from the 2019 Air. The fact that the 2020 Pros still use the A12 architecture pretty much demands that the Air stay at A12 for another year.

My prediction (for whatever it’s worth):
  • Overall design and dimensions matching iPad Pro 11”
  • 10.8” screen with slightly thicker bezels than the iPad Pro
  • Screen is 60 Hz but supports True Tone and P3 gamut
  • Compatible with Pencil 2 and all iPad Pro 11 keyboard accessories
  • A12 chip, 3 GB RAM
  • Touch ID - all rumors are pointing to it being in the power button. But, I wouldn’t be completely surprised if Apple put it in the larger bezel around the screen.
  • Dual speakers on the bottom of the iPad only
  • 8 MP camera with no flash (and maybe flush design with the chassis or at least a smaller bump than on the Pros)
  • Same 64, 256 GB storage capacities
  • $50-$100 base price increase

I hope that you’re wrong about those specs, particularly the A12. What’s the point of having a event for a device that has virtually the same specs as its 18 month old predecessor? That would make this Air entirely a cosmetic upgrade.

Not that there isn’t precedent for that through. 7th gen iPad has the same A10 as the 6th gen (but at least had a RAM upgrade), and the Mini 3 had exactly the same specs as the Mini 2. But those devices are/were on a 12 month update cycle at the time.
