I just made it because so many people post about how it’s stupid to upgrade every year and I wanted to share my perspective

I usually wait for sales/promos. So you can justify buying new phones every year. I just don’t see the rationales for paying full price and still think u can come out ahead reselling on eBay. I’m shocked you can get $900 for one year old iPhone pro Max 11. Considering Apple trade in is $500. Current eBay selling prices are $850-900. But with fees. It net is $800. You are taking a $550 lost after one year when you account for taxes

the only way you can come out ahead is to wait for $300-400 Sam’s gift card deals or trade in $700-800 monthly credit promos.

but to each their own. I’ve owned every iPhone except iPhone 2016 (iPhone 7/plus). So I upgrade every year myself. I know I lose some mone because I pay retail some years I don’t want to wait for promos.
Yeah, Apple trade-in prices are awful. I might wait for promo too or see if there’s a way I can buy it without sales tax because paying $1,300 definitely stings.

OP is correct but only if you sell your current phone to private party each year. i wonder if it's a different story if you just return you iphone back to Apple every year you're on IUP.

Beware of the 'compare to original cost' figure on the Gazelle website.
I was thinking of getting a new or used phone and began researching the iPhone 11 both at the Apple website and at Gazelle. At Apple a new iPhone 11 64gb is $599 before trade-in. At Gazelle they were selling used iPhone 11's 64gb for $514 and up. However, Gazelle was displaying the 'compare to original / new price' at $699. Making it appear that you are saving a lot of money. While it might be true that most of these iPhone were originally sold for $699 new, that is not the case anymore. I don't think anyone would pay $514 for a used iPhone 11 64gb from Gazelle if they knew the same iPhone could be bought NEW from Apple for $599 BEFORE any trade-in value.

It’s not financially responsible for most people to upgrade every year. It’s not a problem if you are an enthusiast and believe you have the finances to cover your vices. But you’re a niche crowd

The anecdote about trading and “only” pay <$500 EVERY YEAR is a bit pretentious. BUT it’s comparable to someone who buys a new GPU or CPU for their PC every year. All us tech geeks pick and choose our spoils.

I used to upgrade every 2 years because that was my contract period. Last time I upgraded my iPhone was 3 years - 6+ to X. I’m not getting a 12, so it’ll be ~4 years between phone upgrades. Maybe I’m getting old. I just don’t feel my X is letting me down in any way that convinces me to upgrade at any cost.

I used to do it this way, but then when the upgrade program came along I switched to that because it's easier and has Applecare built in just in case something happens to the phone. For roughly half the price of the current phone each year, you get the current phone. Admittedly this is not the smartest financial move, but I can afford this small luxury, and since I am in a tech influencer role, it's good for me to be understanding and using the current technology.

re: 12 Pro, battery life is much better than I expected even with the smaller battery. Low light photos are pretty impressive. Seems better than the human eye in terms of the light it can gather. MagSafe is great. I already built a MagSafe nightstand /desk charger using Apple's charger and an older lightning charger base using a laser acrylic cutter. This is the main feature I see, easy magnetic mount/ charging. I'm working on a 3D printed part that will mount to air vent in car providing MagSafe charge/mount.

It's not "dumb" if that's how you want to spend your money. But, let's not pretend it's cost-efficient. Even keeping it two years makes the whole thing a lot cheaper. For example, you can trade in an Xs this year for about $800 (details depend on carrier).
I'm sorry but what carrier is offering $800 for a Xs??? My 11 Pro is only trading in at $450 at Apple, maybe a little higher from a carrier.

This plan goes pretty much out the window when you have a family of four and the kids get the hand-me-downs. Personally I haven't bought a new iphone since 2008, I think. We tend to buy about two versions back, used or refurbished, and to hell with warranties, whizbang new features, etc. It also helps that my own phone is actually paid for by work, but even then it's a couple versions old (I'm currently running an 8Plus, with no expectation of being able to update for another year).

I’ve just upgraded from an 8+ to an iPhone 12 and the differences are not as much as I thought they would be. Performance wise the phones are similar and most of the changes are aesthetic. The camera is the main difference. FaceID isn’t as reliable as I have seen touted and the OLED is nice, but I’d never have upgraded purely for this like many here religiously advertised. If the differences are small after 3 years, i’ll never understand why many of you tall yourselves into needing to upgrade after just 12 months. It takes all sorts though and the big winner is Apple obviously.

One thing to be aware of is that Face ID gets much better over time as it learns about your face each time you unlock it.

I'll have to try this rationale with my Super-Saver Household CFO.

Wish me luck. Lol. 😂
My CFO breaks hers more often than I do. Staying on the 7+ because of touch id, until either it comes back or face id can handle more than one family member :)

It's true. It's actually going to be MoodID, since it will understand your mood and unlock your phone playing immediately some relaxing sounds and showing pictures of your last holiday - that functionality is mostly directed at people where the accelerometer has in the past detected them throwing their phones at the wall.

Paying $50 a month perpetually to use a phone that is essentially the same as last year's phone is not expensive. But it is stupid.

Agreed. It seems like this has gotten worse in the last few years.
Paypal protects the buyer, not the seller. I was stung once selling a phone when the buyer had used a stolen card. My buyer paid using paypal and ebay sent me the address to post my phone to, matched paypal. I posted the phone and a day later paypal took back the money. I raised complaints/claims etc but they didn't care. What little protection there is for sellers is nigh impossible to get.
