Okey, they're pretty similar to me.
Personally, I don't think the lack of 3D Touch/OLED screen on the XR are deal-breakers. And the XR can handle bokeh even with a single camera...
So, what am I missing here?

It doesn't support 1080p. Are you sure you want to buy that a smartphone that doesn't support 1080p video resolution in 2018?

What about the screen resolution. I mean, the XR has a 6.1” screen and it has a resolution of 720p! I would tbink that’s worth the extra $200.

Not just you get 1080p but also OLED display which is miles ahead than LCD

Humans are creatures of status displays. Nothing wrong with it, just how it is. I’m leaning toward XS for poorly rationalized reasons myself.

Status is really the only reason to upgrade a phone at this point. Amazes me how few people are conscious of this.

Can’t believe there are people dropping $1000 per year on a cell phone. These same people are probably up to their eyeballs in debt.

Here in the UK last year a 256GB iPhone X with Apple Care & Leather Folio case cost me about $1500 which is around $2000 USD. Tomorrow I'll pre-order the Xs 256GB with Apple Care & Leather Folio plus the Series 4 Stainless Steel Watch so it will cost me around £2400 (around $3000 USD).

I work for a living so it's not a problem.

both fones have identical:
- same mimo capability
- same dual SIM capability
- same wireless charging
- same world-wide NFC (both NFC A/B, and Japan Felica)

Xs has these "better" features over the Xr:
- lighter in weight
- gigabit LTE
- better water resistance
- more pixels per inch display
- 3D Touch
- 2x Optical Zoom camera (Xr has only digital zoom)

Xs also has these features versus the Xr, which may be "better" in some people's choices:
- narrower than the Xr
- up to 528 GB storage
- camera completely different (most would say better than the Xr)

Xr has better than Xs:
- Xr has much better (longer) battery times than the Xs
- colors

I’m conscious of it and still want the phone.

Ultimately because its smaller, but other features are more to my taste as well.

If I would buy an XS instead of an XR, I'd have a hard time not going for the now way cheaper X from last year. For me, it would be between XR and XS Max considering I like large screens, I think the pricing is enough to go for the XR in that case. But if you're already spending so much money, which not just go all-in on the Max? Wait, now I'm really confused.

OLED screen is pretty big IMO, especially using the phone in the dark. With LCD the entire screen lights up even if it's all black, very distracting and bright. With OLED only the non black parts light up. But the Xr has a larger screen, and I think 3d touch is junk and not having it is actually a positive. Other than that it boils down to the dual camera, more premium materials and smaller bezels. The xr will be a big seller as I think many consumers will opt for the cheaper model. Just to throw a wrench into the equation, if price was an issue I'd probably go for last year's X over both of the new models.

It's a non issue for me as I need the larger Max anyway.

I think XR is a much better value, especially $800 128 GB variety (only $50 more than 64 GB, vs. whopping $150 to upgrade XS to 256 GB).

But I can justify $250 premium for these benefits (in the order of importance):
  • I prefer XS's narrower profile. Easier to hold with one hand.
  • I love OLED.
  • Dual camera lenses. I take quite a bit of videos of kids playing sports.
  • 4x4 MIMO LTE cellular for faster throughput and more reliable cellular connection.
To me, other differences are not meaningfully significant.

I agree. 4x4 MIMO in Xs, which Schiller referred to as Gigabit cellular, and thus more antennae power and data delivery capacity, options and potential speed.

Xr has only 2x2 MIMO LTE Advanced.

Confirmed by diving down into additional Apple spec pages. The basic marketing pages for shopping app don’t distingush the 2 MIMO references for those of us less informed.

XR for me i have a iPhone 7 and I’m tempted to upgrade to XR . Never use 3D Touch . LCD is fine enough OLed is great but definitely not a deal breaker especially on a phone . Regarding the screens resolution I’m happy with my current iPhone 7 display quality so if it’s on par or slightly better I’m happy with that .

Plus the XR will be a battery champ which is my only main gripe with the iPhone 7 I currently own . I will compare in store before making a decision tho

The thing about the XR for me, is the more durable materials. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the back of the phone is aluminum and not glass. If that is the case, I like the idea of the XR. You get much of what that XS has, but for a little less.

I'm glad i don't need to decide this year. But i would likely take the XS, because it is smaller.

But then again, i was able to get used to the size of the X... i would likely get used to the XR too.

3D touch is the most useless "feature" ever. If it were there w/ no downsides--such as extra weight and thickness--okay. But it's not.

Nope, back is glass on the Xr as well...a must for wireless charging capabilities.

It’s glass.

People are getting hellbent on the display resolution, but Apple already sells a much larger iOS device with less PPI than the Xr: Any iPad ever made. (Except the Mini, which has the same 326 PPI and looks great)

Have you ever had a problem with PPI on your iPad or iPad Pro? Both have a PPI of 264, 64 PPI lower than your perfectly functional 10.5” iPad Pro.
