From the day you buy it you will be thinking I’ve got the poor boys iPhone the XR.

People will snigger at you when you use it, is that what you want?

The forever I should have got........
Not sure if serious.

But if someone’s view of themselves is that wrapped up in a phone or what other people think of his phone, there are bigger problems involved than which phone you picked.

The iPad is viewed from further away so it doesn’t matter. Also, resolution and PPI are two different things. The Xs is better in both respects.

I’m not saying the Xr screen will look much worse to you. But there are some major differences.
I do not use my iPad further away than my iPhone. Also, an iPad screen is much larger than an iPhone, so PPI would be more noticeable on the iPad even if it was held slightly further away than an iPhone.

Not for me. Clearly people look at devices from different distances and it seems there are people that hold their iPads like when old men read the newspaper.

For most people, I’d say viewing distance won’t be an issue. People used 330 PPI retina iPhones for years without complaint.

Fortunately I don’t think most people are quite that pathetic :) and the few that are I certainly wouldn’t care what their opinion is!

Couldn’t agree more

I think there are two main reasons - the 50mm camera, and the size.

The XR is pretty close to the 8 Plus in size. Not quite as tall, but still it is a large phone if you are coming from a 6/7/8/SE. The question becomes whether the smaller size is worth $250 more or not.

I think there will be a lot of people going for a used/refurb X over the XR/XS. Likely the same price as the XR but you still get the smaller size and 50mm lens.

The display is True Tone and DCI-P3 color gamut - I highly doubt the color accuracy is "way off."

Still hell of a difference from the Xs line, let’s be real, and the lower pixel density on a giant screen.

I don't think the Xr has HDR/Dolby Vision?
OLED screen for me. The telephoto lens I do use. Xs has smaller bezels than the Xr. The LTE radio.

I’m torn. I am coming from a launch day 6 Plus and trying to decide between an XS Max or an XR. Saving money with the XR is tempting, but I am worried about a phone with a lower PPI than I have had on this phone for the previous 4 years.

Just wait until you’re able to check both out in a store then you can see if the screen is noticeably poorer than your plus :)

Get the Xs Max. Your 6+ has lasted you 4 years. You should be able to get 4 more years easily out of the Max. Especially after the keynote yesterday where they spent a lot of time on talking about how Apple (and only Apple) are designing their phones to be usable for many years.

Objectively, the fact that the Xr does not have the dual rear cameras means that it won't be able to do those cool AR kit stuff, or at least it won't do it as well as the X/Xs. Plus the extra GB of RAM will make it more usable for a longer time.

Can someone explain the difference?

Video Playback (From Apple.com)

Xr: Supports Dolby Vision and HDR10 content

Xs: High Dynamic Range with Dolby Vision and HDR10 content

Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation. You actually mentioned the other most attractive feature on the XS Max for me - the additional GB of RAM. True, I’ve survived with only 1GB of RAM for all these years, but it has been a challenge. I know 3GB would be an upgrade to me for sure, but 4GB would last even longer. Still, maybe the cost savings are worth it. I definitely do keep my devices a long time though.

It seems the OLEDs in the XS and Max are true high dynamic range but the XR doesn’t have quite the same colour range as the XS.

Personally I don’t think this is a big deal for a phone.

Here in the UK last year a 256GB iPhone X with Apple Care & Leather Folio case cost me about $1500 which is around $2000 USD. Tomorrow I'll pre-order the Xs 256GB with Apple Care & Leather Folio plus the Series 4 Stainless Steel Watch so it will cost me around £2400 (around $3000 USD).

I work for a living so it's not a problem.

Depends what you are coming from. If you are coming from a 6/7/8, it should be a nice upgrade. From a Plus model, you may have issues with the 720 screen. Most won't notice though. OLED is a personal preference so that just falls on the individual.

Thicker bezels, cheaper materials and colour accuracy on the screen is way off

The color accuracy on Apple's "best ever LCD in a smartphone" is way off? No, it iss not, it is just less dynamic. The tech is likely similar to the ipad pro, which have amazing screens.

I ordered a Max this morning at 3:00 am EST, as I prefer OLED, but along the LCD on my iPad (and the XR) are great. The price makes the phone very, very tempting. Also, I didn't want to wait until October to order a phone as I don't know if I will be in the middle of moving then.

-Thicker Bezel- yes, who cares, put a nice apple leather case
-Cheaper Materials- yes, but its likely to be in a case. Also, it's still great and better than most phones except the X line and top of the line Galaxy phones.

Really all you lose out on is the dual camera setup and OLED display. These are nice features, but so is the cheaper price tag.

I can see an argument for either phone.

I do love the asinine post that pop up on these threads, but that is the same with any online message board I guess. You have to hope the said person is trolling and doesn't actually believe what they posted.

Some people can enjoy certain things in life and save for retirement.

Of course all that is true, you will never get true blacks with LCD. All my points are valid, not my fault you believe all the marketing tripe that they release. They’re not going to say it’s a lot worse than the one in the Xs.

Source on 720p screen?

Seeing a lot of people say this for some reason. The screen is 828p.

Yes. It's not a 720p screen. It's 828p... which is fine because it is 326 ppi Retina.

And even then, it has the same point-width resolution as the previous Plus iPhones, and the same overall point-resolution of the XS Max.

The difference between the XR and XS Max is that the XR draws the UI @2x retina while the XS Max draws it @3x retina. They both have the same screen 'real estate' though the XR with the screen being a bit smaller physically will have all the same UI elements looking slightly smaller.

Huh very interesting! More data showing the XR is the one to get. XS Max real estate in a smaller package!

Because it's better - two cameras and a super HD screen (vs. 720p). Picture quality and display quality mean a lot to some.
