The iPhone 12 seems like an odd duck in the lineup. For $170 more with the 12 Pro you get a better camera, brighter screen and storage starting at 128GB.

Right now Apple is selling 7 models in the lineup:

iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 12
iPhone 12 mini
iPhone SE
iPhone 11
iPhone XR

That’s crazy. It seems like Apple’s product roadmaps now revolve around filling price points more than anything else. And now that the regular iPhone is almost the same as the Pro wouldn’t it make more sense to get rid of the Pro naming and just have 3 iPhones small, medium and large. They could keep the SE model as the aluminum iPhone and the cheapest.

Even with matching the storage of the Pro you are looking at $120-$150 in savings. A lot of people would rather save that and use it towards maybe some AirPods or something else than anything thing else the Pro would give them.

Bump the storage up on the 12 to 128 and the price difference is only $120. That makes the Pro a no brainer to me.

What do you mean 130-150. The Iphone 12 is 799 with Att or Verizon plus tax for 128gb. The pro is 999 plus tax for the same. Really the only advantage would be the telephoto if you really wanted it. I was looking at the pro max but coming in at around 230 grams is a bit much.

It is a lot for that extra money, however it is still around a 15% increase for things you may not be interested in. Also, some may like the lower weight over the stainless pro model. Screen is the same so the biggest downside is the camera, and many don't exactly use the pro camera to its full capacity. I know I certainly don't.

Funny, I actually think there’s less reason to go for the Pro over the standard 12.
Exactly. I havent been able to tell if the bezels are the same on the 12 or the pro models. I know they were more noticeable because of the LCD

The iPhone 12 with 128 storage (comparing apples to apples) and if you're not on AT&T or Verizon, is $879. $120 difference.

The iPhone 12 is $799 for 64gb storage. 128gb is $50 more. I should of said $120 not $130. $120 difference if you get unlocked, t-mobile or Sprint, or $150 difference if you get Att or Verizon with 128gb compared to the Pro that is $999 for 128gb

I’m inclined to agree. I’m using over 64gb storage now on my 128gb 11 so I require 128gb. So that’s £849 for a 12 vs £999 for a pro. For me personally, £150 for 800 nits brightness, telephoto, lidar, 6gb ram, stainless steel, 60fps Dolby vision/proraw and night mode portraits would be good value. But it all depends on what one values and I think the 12 will surely be the best seller. Especially if you can get away with 64gb or don’t care about the camera differences.

Everyone has different "utility curves" on the benefits, as well as their own view on the incremental cost.

But I agree with you, I think Apple priced the iPhone 12 in a very odd spot, that if you need 128gb, it's a modest difference to upgrade to the Pro vs non-Pro. As my upgrade cycle has pushed from 2yrs to 3yrs, a $999 price vs $879 to me is a fairly easy decision to get given IMO, key features of: 1) 6gb ram vs 4gb (especially helpful given my 3yr cycle), 2) better camera with telephoto lens + nightmode portrait

Agreed. For $120 more it seems the 12 Pro is the way to go.

However, for me my 11 Pro feels too heavy so I’d rather get a lighter device which makes the 12 what I’d prefer and possibly even the 12 mini.

But for those who don’t care about the weight spend the $120 more and get the 12 Pro. Better cameras and probably most important is the 6GB ram in the Pro.

Might seem like an easy choice in the States, but in Canada the price difference is more like $270 CAD (about $205 USD). Not to mention AC+ costs more for the Pro, so toss another $50 CAD on top of that.

~$242 USD extra ain't nothing to sneeze at.

Ya exactly! But the 6 gig ram is kind of attracting me.

Because of the Canadian prices I’m thinking if I go for the 12 pro then why not spend a bitttttttt more and get the max!

Is it confirmed that extra ram is used for general processes though? Or is it just for running the camera?

But yeah, the Pro to Pro Max leap is easier to take than 12 to 12 Pro
