Is the Stainless Steel design more durable than Aluminum? Does it prevents nicks? My iPhone 6S has a lot of tiny scratches on the chassis.

The 12 pro is not worth it and people who are buying it, are just getting it for the name (not everyone I know but trying to get a point across).

The 12 is a better value, the 12 pro has last year's cameras and a lidar sensor that isn't too useful. I would just get the 12, only the max is the pro with value (new hardware). All devices are OLED, very good choice on apple's part.

Isn't the additional 2GB of RAM important (50% increase)?

Damn you, op!
;)
I was committed to getting a 128gb 12 but now you made me look at the numbers again.
Over 30 months, which is what I’d be committing to anyway due to the AT&T credit, the difference is only $5/month.
I couldn’t care less about the camera but if I have it I’ll obviously use it.
The brighter screen will be nice.
The LIDAR could be cool.
The stainless steel would be reassuring given bendgate.
All for the price of a venti Starbucks.
I just wish the blues were the same shade. Oh well.... there’s always graphite.
I dunno if bendgate would be as big an issue here as it 'was' with the iPads, with glass on front and back and all.

I totally forgot about that when I was typing that post, I think it is important but not $200 important. That is my personal opinion, I know there are other sides to this.

I was referring to the iPhone 6 which bent under only 70-pounds of pressure.
The iPhone 5, people had been used to, could withstand 130-pounds before bending.

Does the glass cover the sides as well?

The sides of my Iphone 6S aluminum case have a lot of scratches
Nah it's aluminum, or stainless steel for the Pros.

The SS can still get scratches, and they'll be a bit more visible due to its glossiness. Polishing can help that, though I think that really only worked for the Silver models; the others have a colour coating.

Ah forgot about that. My point still stands though; I feel having the glass on both sides would make it less prone to bending vs. those with the full aluminum backing.

The iPhone 12 seems like an odd duck in the lineup. For $170 more with the 12 Pro you get a better camera, brighter screen and storage starting at 128GB.

Apple goes ridiculously out of their way to insist that everyone is a professional photographer. I look at photos from even years ago and really can't see much difference. Lots of people enjoy the quality, but I'm not bending over backward for that extra camera oomph.

Brightness nits comparison at this range won't mean much in most contexts. The apple watch promised the same level of brightness difference and it doesn't mean much. I've learned to live with "low nits" for so long that it's not like this is a deal breaker for me in any case.

Ancillary costs increase with the Pro series on Applecare, $50 more.

So while I agree with you, in general, you're paying more for something you should really need. I used to get the Pro series until I flatly realized the camera was a huge waste of money -- for me. And I'd say that to anyone -- you have to really desire the camera features to consider the Pro. Screen size not really a determining factor in this argument of course -- there's only one 6.7" screen option, so I'm just comparing the 6.1 pro vs the non pro.

I’m getting the 12 Pro. That said it is the worst value per dollar in the entire lineup. It basically adds last year’s telephoto camera (the worst of the bunch) + the lidar sensor (minimal uses and only affects autofocus in near dark conditions) +software options (proraw and 60fps Dolby vision, many may not care)!+ a stainless steel side band.

i am doing it out of “momentum” (I always get the pro) but someone getting the regular 12 is really getting all the good stuff minus a telephoto lens if you ask me. Heck the colors of the phone are better and the stainless band means nothing to me. If the better cameras of the Max and new even bigger screen are thrown into the deal at $100 more I think it makes a bit more sense but I don’t want the larger size.

Definitely the colors - I mean the blue - probably the most intriguing released color since the famous WHITE of the iPhone 4S. I need two lines, so am getting the 12 now and the 12 Pro Max in 3 weeks. Would love the mini but, as someone said before, the screen might just be too small; I use an Xperia 1ii as my second phone now, and the thin screen just makes the typing experience miserable.

The non-pro supports two SIMs as long as one of them is eSIM. And you can even have multiple eSIMs, but only one active at a time.

My iPhone XS weighs 177g. And my fingers get tired from holding it. iPhone 12 Pro is 189g. Even heavier.
iPhone 12 is 164g and mini is 135g. My fingers will appreciate the light weight of 12 and 12 mini.

Oh yeah I know that - I have 2 sims on my current 11 pro max. I just like that damn color blue on the 12 - its really quiet something - and I have never been goaded by just color before - but I can also use it for my runs and keep the GIANT iPhone Pro Max at home while I do that. Too bad Apple Watch doesn't sync across multiple phone tho.

I was also torn between the 12 and the 12 pro based on them being very even this year. However, I decided on the pro based on that I generally only upgrade every 2-3 years and the extra ram, brighter screen and better-ish camera will stand me better in the long run.

It’s a shame the Pro is ugly AF and comes in rubbish colours though. Would rather have the 12 and keep the £150. You can bet it’ll be way more expensive on contract too

To me the regular 12 is a better buy than the Pro this year. All of the talk of Dolby vision blah blah blah isn't something the regular every day user is ever going to take advantage of.

Right now Apple is selling 7 models in the lineup:

iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 12
iPhone 12 mini
iPhone SE
iPhone 11
iPhone XR

That’s crazy. It seems like Apple’s product roadmaps now revolve around filling price points more than anything else. And now that the regular iPhone is almost the same as the Pro wouldn’t it make more sense to get rid of the Pro naming and just have 3 iPhones small, medium and large. They could keep the SE model as the aluminum iPhone and the cheapest.

For me its the weight. I don't really care about price. My 11 pro feels like a brick in my pocket. And the $200 saved doesn’t hurt. The question you should be asking is why would anyone go with the Pro Version as there is little difference between them.

I went with the pro. Been contemplating 12 vs pro since the announcement. The camera and possibilities of lidar got me there. However, I have to pick up in person and if I like the 12 as much as I do from the keynote I may change my order... and probably have to wait, lol.

I always got the pro until i got sick of the weight. Have a 11pro, ordered a 12 in black with 256gb. Momentum? Silly reason to order the pro. The weight is my biggest issue. Cost no. But the extra $200 saved is a bonus.

Might seem like an easy choice in the States, but in Canada the price difference is more like $270 CAD (about $205 USD). Not to mention AC+ costs more for the Pro, so toss another $50 CAD on top of that.

~$242 USD extra ain't nothing to sneeze at.

$270 CAD? Isn't the 12 with 128GB $1199 and the 12 Pro with 128GB $1399, for a $200 difference?

Not that I disagree in general about the difference.

Seems to me Apple’s product designs these days revolve around 2 things: hitting price points and upselling. Lineup is messy because they’re trying to hit all these price points and then with the 12 in some ways the features/price is designed to upsell you to the Pro. I wish Apple would make people’s choice simple: what screen size do you want. Instead they over complicate things.

These are the best points I think - they're hitting all sorts of price points and blending the lines, especially with 12 and 12 Pro. There are feature differences, but features that for the $150 USD price difference seem to make sense. Just enough to make one think "ah for $150 more I could get this."

Also, for what its worth, I bet the 120Hz / promotion display was going to be another differentiating factor between the 12 and 12 Pro.

$120 price difference between 128 iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. 2 extra gigs of ram, an extra camera, LIDAR, better future proofing.

Along with weight comes strength.
Your choice to go lighter also means the phone will be weaker than your 11 Pro.
Be careful putting your new 12 in your pocket ;)
