I dont care about the money aspect at all. The weight is the biggest difference for me and alot on here.
Luxurious item? 😂
What I mean by luxury item is that for most people who will not use the new camera features, it really would be getting more than what someone needs. Plus, if the United States median household income is anything to go by, dropping $1000+ on a phone is not something people should be doing frequently.

If you prioritize weight as a need to purchase something, more power to you. But that’s all I’m stating in regards to the pricing and use of these phones.

The iPhone 12 seems like an odd duck in the lineup. For $170 more with the 12 Pro you get a better camera, brighter screen and storage starting at 128GB.

Right now Apple is selling 7 models in the lineup:

iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 12
iPhone 12 mini
iPhone SE
iPhone 11
iPhone XR

That’s crazy. It seems like Apple’s product roadmaps now revolve around filling price points more than anything else. And now that the regular iPhone is almost the same as the Pro wouldn’t it make more sense to get rid of the Pro naming and just have 3 iPhones small, medium and large. They could keep the SE model as the aluminum iPhone and the cheapest.
170 is alot you know...

Might seem like an easy choice in the States, but in Canada the price difference is more like $270 CAD (about $205 USD). Not to mention AC+ costs more for the Pro, so toss another $50 CAD on top of that.

~$242 USD extra ain't nothing to sneeze at.
This was my thinking-I was debating between the 12 and pro but ended up getting the 12. Couldn't swallow the $1400 (BEFORE 12% tax) price on the pro given I don't need the extra storage.

I think Snazzy Labs has an interesting take on this, suggesting that the 12 or 12 Pro Max are the ones to go for:

you have to really desire the camera features to consider the Pro.
"bUt iT's OnLy $130 mOrE, MiGhT aS wElL uPgRaDe" Even though you honestly won't notice a difference or even use the cameras features to its full extent? Yea that's exactly what Apple wants you to do. When I worked at Apple, I would never up sell anything if the customer honestly wasn't going to fully benefit from it. Id ask people "Would you purchase a Ferrari just to keep it in your garage?"

I agree. Just thought it was funny. Relax. 👍

For some people $170 cheaper is a big consideration. When you’re talking money, paying less than a grand seems the better buy. Some people could care less about the telephoto lens but getting an iPhone in one of the brighter colors under a grand may seem more appealing.

Wow. Didn't know the max had that much better camera. I thought those Apple shenanigans were a thing of the past? Guess not.

What's your thinking on the need for AppleCare?
I've had it on every phone and watch except my current ones and I'm thinking about skipping it this time also.
I've already got protection through Wells Fargo and even when I did have it I never received the stellar service I used to always hear about from Apple. They'd always just do the bare minimum to resolve any issue.

The telephoto is basically useless in real world applications. Ultra wide at least adds an interesting POV to shots.

I would respectfully disagree. As someone who is into landscape photography, the standard lens on my iPhone 11 is useless much of the time because it makes everything look too far away- it is too much of a wide angle lens on its own. The Ultrawide (besides taking poor quality images anyway) makes things look even further away, making it more useless.

A 2x telephoto would be better in my opinion to pair with the standard lens on the 11 and the 12, because the 2x gets you closer to around 50mm which you would have on a standard DSLR lens, making everything look roughly as close as it does with the naked eye.

I suspect most iPhone 12 purchases will be 128GB, from a practical and marketing perspective. For people who don't know anything about storage size, they're more likely to choose the middle storage option as a safe bet.
It’s the whole upsell mentality. Make the entry level not quite good enough that people spend more to move into the mid tier.

1. There is no such thing as a Pro anything. I hate marketing.
2. Not once in my phone buying life have I ever worried about or questioned RAM
3. Screen brightness = greater battery drain.
4. I have Xr with 64 gb storage, 42 gb Free. The cloud!

I upgraded to 11 for ultra wide lens. 379 after trade in. So big price difference.
I guess you never had an iPhone 6 or an original iPad Air? Because RAM was definitely an issue with both those products.

I’d love to know why the Pro doesn’t have the same camera as the Pro Max. I’ll bet just like OIS next years Pro will have the features this years Pro Max has.

In Europe the difference between 12 and 12 Pro is €200 (both having 128GB). That's about 235 USD. That's also a 20% increase to the iPhone 12's price. A lot of money for relatively little added value.

I don't see much point in getting the pro model, by next year both pro and non-pro will be beaten by the new models anyway. But if you have the money and the use case, go ahead and get the pro.

I'll probably go with the 12. The cost differential to go to the Pro isn't a lot, but I would seldom need the telephoto or the LIDAR and the extra weight would be with me constantly. To tell the truth, the biggest incentive for me to go to the Pro is that it is available in silver.

I’d rather save a bit of money and get the 12. I have in fact preordered a blue iPhone 12 128GB and got £40 cashback. It’s £190 cheaper than the 12 Pro and I am more than happy with my purchase. It’s also proving to be a popular choice. I also prefer the blue of the 12 over the Pro personally.

I'd go for the 12 for the same reasons. I really like the blue of the 12 over the Pacific blue of the Pro.

Not everybody can afford the extra money for a Pro.

Some don’t need the features as they’re getting quite niche - some of the video modes for example, your average user really won’t notice them. So again they look at price And wonder what they’re getting for the extra money.

Size - some people really don’t like bigger phones.

The other thing is, for years Apple were criticised for only having one or two models and finally they now have an iPhone for all budgets, so I think that’s a good thing. There’s a wide range of prices and sizes which can only be a good thing right?

Think i might to for these reasons. complete turn around from a pro though lol.

Lighter.
All black, never really like the SG and the graphite now.
Bigger screen and phone not much bigger than my 11 pro.
Mainly use the wide angle lense v the telephoto thinking about it.
We get $100AUD off first bill, $50 off L plan 180gb for 12 months so same as M plan with 5g (can go down after a year)
I need to increase my data as we can share and i have a 2018 iPad pro ending contract soon so wont have enough, and don't want to pay for seperate sim $25 just to increase data by 20gb. will use hotspot.
Can sell my 11 pro for more than what's owing or just keep paying and pocket the cash.
Tempting.
