Now that the keynote is complete, my desire to purchase an 8 Plus only solidified. It's actually $20 cheaper than I expected at $549, and now we have the new option of AppleCare monthly meaning you can have protection on your iPhone in year 3 if you keep it that long. Terrific stuff.

549 for an iPhone 8 is just a bad deal. I’d wait for a carrier to offer it free or close to it.

It didn’t compel me to upgrade no. My 8+ still holds its own and i’ll upgrade next year.

Nothing wrong with that either... and I almost went that route.

In the end though I went with what many review videos said was the best value in this lineup... the 11. I'm getting $300 in trade for my 8 Plus that I probably won't get next year... and after getting $270 a couple weeks ago for the kids 7 Plus that has me getting the 128 GB 11 for like $170.

So why not... and if the new design phones come out next year as people are saying I'll be in a position to upgrade then too.

Win win for me I think... not a necessary upgrade but at this price I'll do it and catch up to the wife and kids with the animojis, Face ID, etc etc and have better trade value next year.

If you can try it without selling the 8+ first.

I had two XR and sold them both, the notch, the chunky bezels and the weight was tedious for me.

Coming from the 8+ maybe weight and size would be fine for you, but check the rest of the things...

Can´t tell the screen difference between 8+ and XR / iP 11 because I use the 8 (4,7), in that way the XR was fine, no great, bur fine enough.

I really feel like it will be fine. I just upgraded the kid to the XR last week and the wife to the XS Max via a BOGO Verizon deal and I've held both. The XS Max feels a bit large while I was comfortable with the XR... and I believe the XR and 11 will share the 6.1 screen?

That has me confident I won't be disappointed.

I've always been a notch hater but it really didn't bother me holding the XR side by side with the 8 Plus. I think because the bezels are gone.

I agree... Nothing wrong with it.

Wife and kid just upgraded from 8 Plus/7 Plus to XS Max and XR via a BOGO deal with Verizon. I'm gonna check out the keynote but I am 99.999% sure I'll be keeping my 8 Plus a 3rd year.

It's paid off and still does everything I need it to do... quite well I might add. It's not like it's bogging down out of memory and can't run apps... LOL

Were you able to get BOGO from Verizon, as an existing customer upgrading existing lines? I haven't seen that promotion on my account. Did you have to ask for it?

The girlfriend was with Tmobile and I've been with Verizon since 1998. Decided it was time to merge (not sure why I didn't do this sooner, been with her 6 years) but I went into the store and was offered the deal with the new lines.

That makes sense. The promos are better when you add a new line. Thanks for the info.

I will probably move from my XS Max to the 11Pro Max and then skip next year.
I am looking forward to 5G, but considering next years iPhone will [hopefully] be the first to support 5G, I'll leave it a year for them to iron out any bugs before I jump on board. I also don't see what 5G will do for the average smartphone - I have no problem streaming video etc over a 4G connection, so cant see what 5G will actually provide me with (except a higher monthly cell plan!)

If you're seriously considering an 8, maybe wait until iOS 13 comes out and see how people report their 8's are running the new iOS.
I have a 8 and things are still working great for me, minus an issue with video recording; which shouldn't be a concern for you since you'd get a new warranty with any new phone you eventually choose.

I wouldn't expect anything less than great performance from an 8/Plus on iOS13 - the A12/A13 are not much faster than A11.

Yep. I'm not upgrading to the 11 because of any 8 Plus disappointment. It's still more than worthy. I'm just upgrading because it's a bargain price and I'll have better trade value next year if I decide to go with whatever comes out.

Who knows though... the yellow 11 might grow on me and I keep it for a couple years like I did the 8 Plus.

Hahah... yeah, she does exist and we aren't married but might as well be. I just type in the word "wife" a lot because all our friends tell us we argue like a married couple. :)
Ha, I know exactly where you're coming from! I did the same thing until last September when we made it official.

I’m sticking with my iPhone 8 Plus.

In fact, I’m taking it in soon to Apple to have it replaced so that I can get a fresh one (yes, I’m completely willing to pay the AppleCare fee for the new battery)

I’ve been an iPhone user since iPhone 4, and the 8+ has been the best for me for the following reasons:

(1) Battery life is an all day endeavor

(2) The rear facing camera is still top notch. (One exception, no optical image stabilization for video)

(3) The fastest, most reliable Touch ID - Touch ID is ultimately why I have not switched to the latest models. There is great utility in touch ID compared to Face ID.

And if you believe faceid is more secure – I would encourage you to read the following article

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jvchamary/2017/09/18/security-apple-face-id-iphone-x/#5d1607aa4c83

There are trade-offs between all of the various security features, but I think for most of us, the main selling point for security on our phones is not that someone is trying to steal our data (I’m no one special), but rather, it’s a deterrent to someone stealing our phone and selling it somewhere else.

With that being said, Touch ID has been much more functional for me even as I compare my usage to my wife’s faceid equipped X.

I frequently pull my phone out of my pocket with my thumb on the Touch ID and by the time I’m looking at the screen, my phone is already unlocked (unlike the 3 steps she has to take). Plus, nighttime conditions, angle of the phone relative to her face and changes in facial appearance (sunglasses) give her angst.

Maybe when Touch ID under screen is realized, I’ll bite.

The 8 folks sure have quieted down; did the new iPhone 11 stuff entice you to upgrade from the 8?

The new Deep Fusion looks like an incredible first step towards a significant leap forwards.

All the same, I am not a professional photographer. I use my 8+ and DSLR and I’m totally happy with both.
But if I was a professional, seems like an easy choice to upgrade.

Touch ID, home button, and a Screen design that actually does not cause troubles when using in landscape mode. No, I am not talking about watching movies, but playing games. Bezels for usability, I think I can take it.

5G won’t be relevant for 80% of people until at least 3-5 years later, and by then, 6G will come up. My opinion is to not care much about 5G. It won’t provide anything groundbreaking to smartphone today, even the download speed. 5G is for IoT.

Have to agree, regarding 5G. With it requiring far more masts, I feel as though its rollout will be painfully slow and not bring the results fully expected of it which is not ideal at all.

It may only be in 2025 where 5G will be more widely available and even then, it probably will be far less wide than 4G.

I think 6G will only come in later in the decade, around 2028/2029.

For me it was because I really love Touch ID. I downgraded from a XR to an 8+ just for that reason.

I wouldn't, but if I did, It would be the 8 Plus. It's one redeeming feature is the 16:9 aspect ratio. It fills most media perfectly without notches covering content or black bars. Great for video, second only to the Max.

I don't know why anyone would want an 8 though unless they really like touch ID. The X phones are about the same physical size and fit larger screens.

In my situation, yes. Going from an iPhone 8 to an iPhone 11 Pro and can’t wait. Fed up of the bezels on this phone, and want to suss out the OLED screens :D

I have an 8 and prefer the form factor over the X because of the way the screen is on the 8. The bezels for me make it better to navigate on the screen.

I just spent $169 replacing 5 month out of warranty hairline crack on my wife iPhone 8 Plus 64gb for the same reason the op is considering buying an 8 plus. Kinda of sucks cause Apple considers hairline crack a manufacturer defect and repairs it for free if under warranty. Could have gotten fixed for $80-90 but third party glass repairs are so hit or miss with the products they use.

But it was bothering my wife. So I got sceeen replaced with Apple.

It’s still a great phone. And it’s got a least 2 more years worth of life left. May need to replace the battery in 6 months for $49 Battery percentage is down to 86%.

I also got her the iPhone 11 128gb with $200 gift card deal. She wants more space. I may just still keep the iPhone 8 Plus as backup as well.
