I don’t think people should be so hostile to the OP.

Personally, i think that judgement may exist in the snobby minority tech crowd. I think 95% don’t know the differences enough and don’t care. They’ll just love the colors.

I personally think that anyone not owing the latest top of the line iPhone is not worth my time and attention and seriously look down on them.

Just by asking this question feels cheap to me.

If you had any self-respect whatsoever you would have already have bought the iPhone XS Max 512GB edition in gold and carry it around without a case or screen protector instead of even considering the Xr which is made for the lesser people.

No one will know or care.

I'd be more concerned about buying a device with
a lower quality display being passed off as the best LCD for $750+

I was sat in a hospital waiting room earlier and I got out my 8+. A guy opposite was literally sick in his own mouth and nearly dropped his XS Max as he fled for the door. Who could blame him though? I mean, he was in there enjoying the attention with women complimenting him on his awesome technological babe magnet when I go and do something so socially unacceptable. I think if I’d told him I had only just bought this year old model he could well have been rushed down to resus and nobody would want that.

The moral of the story is if you own an older device or one that is now mid tier, enjoy it, but for Christ sake don’t get it out in public!

LOL! I wouldn’t disagree. My friends are pretty ridiculous but hey it makes for good times and some memories worth talking about that I'll never forget.

True. I guess the whole idea is not wanting people to think I need to check to see if I have the money.

Like, “A grand for a phone? I’ve got that. Don’t even need to check twice. I know it’s in the bank no problems”
Goodness you’re young enough to still have silly shallow friends but can easily afford the expensive flagship? You’re very blessed and have done well for yourself! Enjoy your youth. :D

I did work very hard but wasn’t as fortunate in my youth and was counting every penny until my mid 30’s. That was pretty common for the youth of my generation.

Younger people now seem to earn mind boggling amounts of money, but they carry on like they resent old farts like me and my husband for having even more money. They don’t realize we only just arrived to this level. We lived very sparse and frugally until middle age. As did our parents. And our grandparents. I was about 40 when I stopped having to sweat every nickel and dime.

When I go to visit my old college campus I’m always shocked at how fancy everything is now and I wonder how the students can afford all these amenities. There are so many upscale restaurants and cafes. When I was a student, I survived off of chips from the vending machines. A couple of times a month I could afford to treat myself to lunch from the Roy Rogers that used to be on campus. That was about it. My husband’s family was more well to do than mine so he could afford to eat at Roy’s three times a month :p

Something somewhere along the line must have changed for younger people. Well, good. Enjoy your hard earned money. Remember to set some aside, so when you’re an old bat like me (52) you can still party hearty. ;)

I wish you would relax and get what you truly like and want and not care what your friends think. But that kind of confidence and security in oneself usual does come with age. You’ll be there all too soon. Trust me on that.

It wouldn’t be good for some people’s image if they bought the iPhone XR and rocked it in public bc people will think they don’t have the money to buy the best.

Anyone who wants to show out might be hesitant to buy XR for this reason.

EDIT:

iPhones are ABSOLUTELY a status symbol in other countries. So please don’t say it’s not. In America no, but yes for many places.

In fact, I had heard the gold color was aimed for Asia markets bc it’s considered good luck and symbol of wealth for many.

It depend how the carrier sales people focus is on the XR! Many times the called the SE the budget iPhone and that no longer being sold in the U.S., will they use the same “budget” description for the XR? And want are middle school and high school crowd going to think of it? That the most important since these student set the trend for “status” now a day for smartphones! I been watching how kids think of iPhones and definitely as important item to have like a German luxury vehicle for adults.
