It really just depends on your friends. Like if someone hangs with a circle that’s Hollywood then yeah the X a must IMO.

Some people really do look at that stuff.

Cars, house, clothes, and the details can matter too like what watch you got on, the iPhone you’re rockin, the kind of wine you order at a restaurant, and even how much you tip.

The thing is that people like that often times have nothing of substance to offer...simply superficial...it's quite easy to buy a thousand dollar phone and have designer clothes accessories etc..and not actually have anything in the bank for real life problems when they occur.. personally I would never want to be associated with those types of ppl that judge u based on ur material possessions and the face u put on for the world.

In my world, it's not a status symbol. Many people can afford these phones since carrier financing is available.

I see an inverse relationship where I work. The people making North of $200k and even $1M own the worst phones. Often chipped iPhone 6s or 7s. They don't care about phones, it's just a tool for them of little value.

Correct these same people could be in debt to fund all that.

But this is often the crowd that’s wild and crazy and fun to hangout with because they make memories worth talking about :)

It wouldn’t be good for some people’s image if they bought the iPhone XR and rocked it in public bc people will think they don’t have the money to buy the best.

Anyone who wants to show out might be hesitant to buy XR for this reason.

EDIT:

iPhones are ABSOLUTELY a status symbol in other countries. So please don’t say it’s not. In America no, but yes for many places.

In fact, I had heard the gold color was aimed for Asia markets bc it’s considered good luck and symbol of wealth for many.
It's expensive and mentally draining to be socially awkward.

Those aren’t friends dude. Those are superficial jackasses who are valuing you based on the crap you own.

You need “actual friends”. Once you some then you can stop asking questions like these.

I am actually considering the 256GB XR and I already have the X.Great features for the price and the 6.1 size would be perfect for me.I have also always wanted a blue iPhone and the Blue XR looks amazing in the pics Apple posted.

I too am eyeing up the Blue XR. Still rocking a 6S but this one is calling my name. Just a note I am also considering switching to a Samsung S8 S9....Decisions....

Lol, here at work, the ones I know who make around that much on capital gains alone either don't have cell phones or have a $50 pay-as-you-go prepaid Android or Nokia Windows phone. I do think their cars are even older than me. :p

I notice that anytime someone talks about status like this, they seem to be from a different culture from me. It would be easy to lecture them about not caring about what others think.

If you’re in prison, would you be right care how others perceive you? If you are perceived you as weak in prison, you are in serious trouble. You might be better off caring what other people think, and leave the “I don’t care what people think” mentality to those who don’t face any repucusions.

If you are in a culture that cares about status, are you better off making yourself a target for ridicule, isolation, unable to get hired or have a family, disappoint your parents, because you want to be above it all? Or should you play the game? I don’t know.

It would be easy for me to just repeat the platitudes that are all throughout this thread already. But I wonder if people in this thread who are spouting cliches understand what it’s like living in a status obsessed culture.
Finally someone

When it comes to reality, nobody cares what phone you have.
I dont and I respect that you dont but many ppl do, not just what phone someone have but what 'everything' they have, they even count every single word someone might say... You must be living in a gossip-free society but since such society doesnt exist on this planet you must be from Mars ;)
What if such a dick of a person is your boss? Yes, maybe you can change your job but what if itz not easy or possible to do? Reality? Maybe your reality. Our reality is not the only one.

P.s. My phone is Sony T3 from 2014 that's been dying for the last 2 yrs. It looks like a $7 worth piece of technology (5 inch, 1 gb ram, 270 ppi) and i dont care :) ...looking to by my first iphone and itz gonna be the XR.

I live in LA and no one cares about anything unless you have a $1 million car or have top shelf tits and ass... or have beautiful abs and are showing them off. Oh and if you have s beautiful dog, lots of people notice that. I got the phone SE because more people will notice and comment about that than the newest biggest whatever. Basically, when I'm asking a girl to put her number in my phone and hand her the micro iPhone it starts a conversation.

Sorry grandma, your decades of undying service mean nothing because you don't party with the iPhone XS MAX. All those free meals, taking care of me over the summer, and teaching me life lessons mean nothing.

I may not be following, so I apologize, but what phone someone else has never crosses my mind. Nor does what others think about what phone I have. It’s inconsequential to my life so I don’t understand the point.

Exactly! Why would i judge someone based on what phone they have...Seems stupid to me!

I can only report what I am seeing taking a daily commuter train with 3,000 people a day and working in an office environment with 1,000 people a day. None of the executives are using Plus sized phones. Those that I do see with Plus sized phones are young people playing games and streaming movies.

Thousands of people a day, five days a week, and family outings, trips to the mall, sporting events on weekends in the NYC vicinity. Take that FWIW. YMMV.

Interesting observation. I’m in IT and most staff at all levels have plus sized phones, but our cio is still using a 6s.

The more probable way this is gonna go is all the people who get the XR are gonna claim it’s better than the XS (regular size) because it’s bigger.

Only the truly shallow ones. Wow. Need a phone? Get the one that works for your situation. OR, mortgage your life to make yourself look important. #mindblown
