Sheeeet. Now that you mentioned this, I'll go back and rock my iPhone 4. May not live up to battery standards of today, but I don't need to worry about anyone labeling me because of what iPhone I rock and carry around.

Yeah, but then people will jeer at you for being a hipster with your old phone.

LOL, can't win either way. People suck.

It’s a phone. It’s a multi tool and a device that we use for communication, I don’t _care_ what anyone thinks about any piece of tech device I own, it merely is meant to convenience me and what I want to achieve out of it. That’s it.

Well I think most people in their 20s especially if they’re still in school and have friends etc would see it more than just a device to make phone calls and check bank statements.

There is a fashion element to it IMO more so for the younger crowd.

I see it as a tool but then I got some friends who were more into that culture of “what car you’re driving, clothes you’re wearing” and then got the X. Peer pressure I guess.

I actually LOVED my 6S and still do cracked screen and all but then people started questioning it so I caved and did it big.

If you bowed to peer pressure, you may want to do some internal inventory and find out why that is. Your friends don't pay the bills. As such, it shouldn't matter what other people think about what phone you have. Giving someone grief because they have a certain phone they like is very immature. You might want to find some better friends.

I get what you mean but that’s a problem with the person that judges. $700 for a phone isn’t cheap at all and the phone certainly doesn’t look cheap in my opinion.

LOL! I wouldn’t disagree. My friends are pretty ridiculous but hey it makes for good times and some memories worth talking about that I'll never forget.

True. I guess the whole idea is not wanting people to think I need to check to see if I have the money.

Like, “A grand for a phone? I’ve got that. Don’t even need to check twice. I know it’s in the bank no problems”

All the people who ordered the Xs - now suddenly concerned people will think they are still carrying the old X if it’s hidden in a case will carry it naked just to avoid the social stigma.

Just tell people that you got it cheap! That should put you in good standing with everyone!

wait how would people know unless it's the gold?????

Yes, I would not show off a 720P phone that I paid over $800.00...Its pretty embarrassing no lie.

You can also turn this thought process around and ask if there would be people who would feel embarrassed to be seen with the high end model because it would appear that they might be image obsessed, stupid with their money, or that it might appear as if they were trying to signal a level of status that everyone knows they don't have.

I'll be honest. I'm one of those people.

When I see people who always have the newest and most expensive gadget, I don't see a style icon. I tend to be more ready to judge that person to be a shallow idiot with more money than sense and likely not much of either.

This isn't a fair attitude either. Most people who bought into the latest hot gadget are probably not shallow idiots that I'd want to avoid for my own happiness. Once in a while that person is me even and while I know I came to my purchase decision in a sound way, there is a part of me that feels the insecurity you're talking about, but in reverse. I'm reluctant to bring my device out and let people see me with it while it's still considered a big deal.

The XR could quite frankly appeal to people for the very same inverse image reasons I brought up here. If I needed to get a new iPhone right now, I might very well be MORE drawn to an XR because to me it feels like it communicates that I'm not image obsessed and I'm probably more disciplined than the average cat because I paid $350 less for a phone that's probably going to do everything someone else wants to do with the iPhone XS.

This is exactly why I have more than one phone to use depending on which set of friends I am with. For some of my low brow friends when we gather to eat KFC and swill Natty Ice I keep an old iPhone 5C in the yellow color. So yeah my new XS Max may be too ostentatious in some circumstances. A true meterosexual such as myself knows when and when not to over play y hand.

It doesn’t matter what other people think. What matters is what YOU think. I don’t care if you have the top of the line iPhone or the crappiest android hunk of junk. That’s not going to change who you are as a person or if I like you. And in a perfect world everyone would think the same way.

That's what most of your circle wants you to think, reality is different no doubt. Smart people practice OPM, so interest free IUP is popular among smart people and some who say they pay cash to impress equally shallow souls.

The one about the guy breaking his phone that he needed to sell to upgrade was pretty bad. We should have an annual awards for worst threads created.

Don’t matter to me since my Rolex on my wrist is worth more than their little phones.;)

I notice that anytime someone talks about status like this, they seem to be from a different culture from me. It would be easy to lecture them about not caring about what others think.

If you’re in prison, would you be right care how others perceive you? If you are perceived you as weak in prison, you are in serious trouble. You might be better off caring what other people think, and leave the “I don’t care what people think” mentality to those who don’t face any repucusions.

If you are in a culture that cares about status, are you better off making yourself a target for ridicule, isolation, unable to get hired or have a family, disappoint your parents, because you want to be above it all? Or should you play the game? I don’t know.

It would be easy for me to just repeat the platitudes that are all throughout this thread already. But I wonder if people in this thread who are spouting cliches understand what it’s like living in a status obsessed culture.

I only paid in full bc I got my X for ~$550. Carrier deal. Also got cash back, AND didn’t even need Apple care bc my CC covers accidental damage as well.

I’m NOT paying $999+ for a phone lol but my friends probably don’t know that hehehehe

And that’s why, in part, I’ve got the money for a ~thousand dollar phone ;)

For me, I like playing the game. But I play the game my own way.

Like I’m not going to buy the gold Xs just to be flashy since I like my space gray X.

But I’m willing to bet people think I’m using a Xs bc they just assume I would.

That to me is the game.

You traded in your old phone which you could have sold on the open market and gotten comparable value for and was signed up for two more years of carrier service. The deal you got was fair, but nowhere near the massive win you seem to think it is.

You're basically gloating about a modest discount given to you by the carrier in exchange for ensuring that you remain their customer for a couple more years. If they can make you this happy to accept a deal that is at best only modestly in your favor, you're not the one who's controlling the game.

No exchange at all. Brand new for ~$550 plus tax.

Even waived the fee

This has to be the most ridiculous thread...no one cares what phone your using in this day and age..everyone has a smart phone...example I could very well afford to buy a few xs max iPhones but the ppl that they would be for don't necessarily want them..I know my gf played with my X but she doesn't want to do face Id yet and she isn't enamored with gesture navigation yet she prefers an 8 plus as an upgrade to her 7 plus since it's still available and still a decent upgrade from her 7 plus...point is that every one has different needs and likes..having the latest greatest most expensive gadget won't make u some one everyone instantly looks up to...it just makes u look like a snobby tool if u think that way.

It really just depends on your friends. Like if someone hangs with a circle that’s Hollywood then yeah the X a must IMO.

Some people really do look at that stuff.

Cars, house, clothes, and the details can matter too like what watch you got on, the iPhone you’re rockin, the kind of wine you order at a restaurant, and even how much you tip.
