It wouldn’t be good for some people’s image if they bought the iPhone XR and rocked it in public bc people will think they don’t have the money to buy the best.

Anyone who wants to show out might be hesitant to buy XR for this reason.

EDIT:

iPhones are ABSOLUTELY a status symbol in other countries. So please don’t say it’s not. In America no, but yes for many places.

In fact, I had heard the gold color was aimed for Asia markets bc it’s considered good luck and symbol of wealth for many.

probably ppl would think are you into colorful phones thats why you bought XR. There are many reasons can come into ppl's mind not just that you cant afford it.

Stop worrying about what other people think. That’s how people go broke and stay broke.

I would hazard a guess that those with this mindset are likely to be young - probably still in school. Not much different to the whole “social status dictated by brand and design of trainers worn” rubbish that existed when I was at school (and probably still does).

Alas, there will be some adults who retain that mentality. It’s no skin off my nose because I couldn’t possibly care less what they think.

If you go to a StarBucks in the Netherlands you will see normal people drinking coffee and having a normal conversation.
When I went to New York I saw people taking a whole table for their iPads, MacBooks, iPhones and Watches (not on their wrist). For a European, this whole status symbol thing is also evident in the states (well, at least in NY :D )

This “cheap” phone is in fact beyond the means of most people- even in rich countries.

Besides in a case who knows what phone it is anyway- they all look the same in a case.

Following that logic, Amazon Jeff Bozo drives around in a two year old Toyota Corolla so people think he cannot afford the best! And Warren Buffett drives a 10 year old Cadillac too. LOL!

Even If that true, people already knows they’re rich!!!

To be honest, I reckon that's the way society has always been. It's just the trappings that change.

Wow, I must not have very shallow friends, family or co-workers. Makes me appreciate my life a little more. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that kind of pressure. I sure hope everyone is fully funding their Roth IRA's each year before spending thousands of dollars keeping up with the Jones's.

OP and boltjames are the only two who'd care.

I bought an iPhone 8 last year because I am poor low class scum who can't chum with the likes of those who measure their self worth entirely by a low four figure purchase. 1 large? Oooh, such baller status - just screams wealth and status.

In your 20s, you care what people think. In your 30s, you don't care what people think. In your 40s, you realize nobody was ever thinking about you at all.

Oh, and everyone has an iPhone, so nobody cares, period.

love this comment -- "In your 40s, you realize nobody was ever thinking about you at all." lol so true -- other than your family -- no one cares what you do nor should u care what others do.

I'll think they are smarter than people rocking an XS Max. Honestly, I'll suspect that XS Max people have their priorities misplaced until proven otherwise.

The happiest guy I know--and the one I admire most--drives a 13-year-old beater, owns his condo outright, uses a badly beat up iPhone 4, and puts 80% of his paycheck in the bank each month. He's 52 and works because he wants to, not because he has to.

I'm sure he'd happily use an XR if his iPhone 4 died--or someone gave him the XR. And I'm also sure he would not give a rat's a$$ what other people think about his phone. LOL.

I'm not saying every single person is like that. Just that if you look back in history, there's likely always been those who care about status symbols. It's not just some new phenomenon that started with iPhones.

Sheeeet. Now that you mentioned this, I'll go back and rock my iPhone 4. May not live up to battery standards of today, but I don't need to worry about anyone labeling me because of what iPhone I rock and carry around.

I can only report what I am seeing taking a daily commuter train with 3,000 people a day and working in an office environment with 1,000 people a day. None of the executives are using Plus sized phones. Those that I do see with Plus sized phones are young people playing games and streaming movies.

Thousands of people a day, five days a week, and family outings, trips to the mall, sporting events on weekends in the NYC vicinity. Take that FWIW. YMMV.
I am on a train right now, granted way on the other side of the country, here in Phoenix, AZ, but a train nonetheless. I’m just getting off from work and so are many people on this train.

I see at least 10 iPhone Pluses of various generations around me now. And I didn’t even check the entire car, much less the two other cars. Why? Because one, I don’t care. And two, pluses are everywhere.
