lolol i don't think there is that much that they could update it to appearance wise.
no doubt a 120 gb hard-drive and 250 gb hard-drive option

I'm hoping they revert back to the 5G style, but they won't
I don't like the tapered edges or the material of the new iPods. And the lack of white, gah. It's the iPod, it needs a pure white flavour.

Realistically I'm expecting a max of 250gb. No wifi, no touch controls. Just the classic iPod aesthetics refined some more.

They usually re-design, but now that the Classic is now not the highest priced iPod, I doubt they will. Probably'll turn out like this

160GB - $250
320GB - $350
400GB - $450 <-- Could happen

Honestly, i'm waiting for an :apple:DS so I can have a screen to watch my movies and have another screen to play/pause/rewind/etc and search for another video if the video i'm watching is almost done so it transfers seamlessly

400 GB would need about 3 Hard Drives in there so it would be very fat. 160 GB is still the current maximum and is likely to stay that way for the rest of 2008. Toshiba's DTR could boost it to 240 GBs but we're looking at 2009 for that.

Apple wants to eventually move all other screened iPods to OS X based-the classic will.

Apple could create a App store category for these iPods-though, the range of apps would limited compared to the touch.

My predictions

People have been saying there's nothing that can really be improved. Sure the classic is good, but I'm planing on upgrading and I really wanted to hear some detailed discussion about it because people tend to neglect the classic for the touch and the iPhone so I really wanted to hear some ideas on the classic. So here's what I EXPECT.

Slightly Thinner
120GB, 250GB (or 160GB/320GB) for $250 and $350 respectively.
New interface
More Scratch Resistant Screen
Wifi for access to iTunes store

I really think all that stuff is possible, sure a larger screen would be nice. I would love to see some applications for the (new) classic in the application store, is that possible? Yeah, what do you think?

Still lovin' on my 5.5 30gig white bundle of love. It goes everywhere with me, especially in the car. I hated the feel of the classics, they just feel cheap. If they reverted back to that design in some way, I'd spring for a larger one (60 gig).

I don't know if I agree with you both. I have a relatively large music collection (about 16.3 gigs) and a large movie collection (maybe 80 gigs at this point). I've come to discover though that getting ipods to store all of that just isn't sustainable. I mean think about it- you people with large video collections- how long has the video store been out- in a few years our collections will double- what then- terabyte ipods? With all of that, transfer times are a factor. Loading ipod classics isn't exactly a quick task. How long will filling a 360 or 500 GB take? Finally, do you really need all of that on the run? Do you need it so badly to keep replacing ipods with more and more storage as your collection grows?

I've gained this philosophy having by having a 30 GB ipod and an iphone: The perfect size is about 60 gigs (maybe slightly adjusted depending on one's music collection. ) Considering my collection is about 20 gigs now, I'll assume a total of 40 gigs allowing for better quality music as I get it/rerip cds and more as I acquire it. That leaves about 20 gigs or about 15 hours for video. I could maybe use a little more room here too in case they release higher quality videos, but for an ipod/iphone I'm not so sure its worth it. 15 or more hours will easily get you through even a week or two from your home computer.

Unfortunately you fail to realise that 20gb is a relatively small music collection to some of us. Between Mark Greaney, Damien Rice Placebo, Radiohead and Muse I have about 15gb. I like many more artists than that.

I think the first thing is very funny, for reasons I am about the explain. When the iMac G3 was around and people expected new iMac's, they never expected the design of the iMac G4. When the G4 was redesigned, nobody expected the design of the G5. What I'm saying is that nobody knows what the future designs will hold; I, for one, and completely stumped as to what the iMac in 2015 will look like; no doubt it will be very different.

As to the second thing you said, think about it. 250 gigs across USB 2.0? That would take quite awhile, and if you really need it on the go, who has that kind of time to constantly be updating it? Just what I think.

Lack of white is gross to you? Really? I for one hate Apple white plastic, I think the aluminum look is a lot better. I loved the new silver Classics when I first saw them.

They won't change anything because then it would no longer be a "Classic" design. Capacity is all we'll see.

Yes of course steve is obsessed with thinness(even with himself)

120GB, 250GB (or 160GB/320GB) for $250 and $350 respectively.
The price drop probably(but maybe not since apple wants to sell touches) but since the iPod uses 1.8 Hard Drives and they max out at 160 GB right now anything bigger just is not possible. And who has more than 160 gb of media anyway?

New interface
They did that last year. and their focus is on iPhone OS based devices. The iPod Classic is just here because the flash memory doesn't exceed 80 gb now

More Scratch Resistant Screen
Sure. I don't see may not.

Wifi for access to iTunes store
Not gonna happen the classic is the big brother ipod nano that can last 2 days non stop. adding wifi would kill its battery life.

Don't get your hopes up i read some where i don't have the link on me but i think since the Nano's and the ipod Touches have been selling way better than expected i think there's gonna be more focusing on the nanos/touches i think the only thing we will see from the classic is probably a size increasement nothing more but you never know with apple

Sure- the figures I said for size were more tailored for me, but even then- I still think that at this point apple's focus will be to make larger touches larger until they replace classics. Until then, there will be the classic, but it feels like that's all it will be- an option, not a platform that moves forward.

This year all I see happening is bigger battery life, lower price, perhaps a higher resolution screen, but not much else. Maybe some additions to the iPod OS.

since the ipod classic uses aluminum on the front is it possible we might see a better color choice? i would love to have a red classic.

Thats tiny little bit is all you have? I have over 32GB in my music collection alone. Counting HD (720p and 1080p), I have over 1.75TB of movies and TV shows. Yes, I'm a pack rat when it comes to good video. :)

What quality is your music collection recorded in? My library has a mix between 128 and 256 kbps- I guess if space on ipods/iphones weren't an issue, maybe I would have used apple lossless to record my cds, but I pretty much gave up on the idea. Is that the issue for people?

As for video, I could certainly see racking up that size collection one day, especially with HD should it become available, but would you want it all on your ipod? Besides, you can't put that HD stuff on an ipod right now if you wanted to. Would HD matter on an ipod screen?

I wants me a 320GB classic. I'll finally be able to get my whole music collection -about 290GB in Apple Lossless - on the thing.

The Classic is the definative iPod platform for me. No flash based system will hold my collection for several years. I need the scroll wheel to navigate within songs (the slider on my iPhone is horribly imprecise, especailly on longer tracks and podcasts).

Oddly, I remember my first 10Gb iPod and thought it was the greatest thing ever. Of course, I was coming over from audio casettes and unsatisfying daliance with MiniDiscs.

If the ONLY thing they did to the Classic was make it significantly more snappy in the menus, and loading music i would be sold.

I dunno how they would market that though...

I've never had a problem loading the music on my Classic. Sure, Coverflow is a little slow, but since I never use it anymore, I don't really care. However, I really like that footnote for the headphones. Funny stuff.

By loading music i meant playing music. The OS is just much slower than previous ipods. My ipod photo is faster to get from playing a song, to the root start menu. There are always pauses and hiccups while navigating. (this is a 160gb by the way)

I would be so pleased to have 160gb+ ipod that was fast to play music, and navigate, all doing this without ANY hiccups or slow downs. That would be nice.

Oh, I knew what you meant when you said loading music. For me, it is just the contrary; my 80 gig Classic (perhaps that is why) is pretty much at a tie for speed with my 2 gen nano. My previous iPod was a second-hand 5 gen that had been through a lot just with me; that's probably why it was so slow.
