If Apple plays it conservatively, whoever said the new classics will be 120 GB and 240 GB models may be pretty much explaining the truth of the new classic models. It will be what I call "6.5G iPod." It will keep exactly the same form factor so current cases and iPod docks will work with no problems.

However, I do expect a new circuit board internally to reduce power consumption and possibly improve sound quality (maybe a return to the Wolfram DSP chip?).

By loading music i meant playing music. The OS is just much slower than previous ipods. My ipod photo is faster to get from playing a song, to the root start menu. There are always pauses and hiccups while navigating. (this is a 160gb by the way)

I would be so pleased to have 160gb+ ipod that was fast to play music, and navigate, all doing this without ANY hiccups or slow downs. That would be nice.

I gave my 6th generation iPod to my sister for her birthday after a month of use; it was driving me crazy! For those of you who have never used an iPod with a black and white screen, try it, and you'll be amazed at how much more responsive it is then your current "better" iPod with a color screen.

My wish list is something that feels like the 1G/2G felt in my hand- sturdy, and with backlit buttons.

If the ONLY thing they did to the Classic was make it significantly more snappy in the menus, and loading music i would be sold.

I dunno how they would market that though...

Don't worry, i submitted my marketing design to Apple. We shortly should see and iPod which has significantly more snappy menus.

I know you want that, but it's never going to happen. Sorry.

heh they could keep the cacity the same, and add other things. One of them being soemthing to allow for people to add storage of their own via an sd card or soem form of adapter. of course anyway you do it, I'd lso want a battery just for that side of thigns alone, a small one, but one that would be enough for it not to ruin battery life for the ipod.

I'm going to need to soon buy an Ipod Classic to use in a dock for whole house audio distribution. Apart from possibly larger sizes and cheaper prices, is there anything realistic about the upcoming changes that would be important to me? This ipod will be in my basement connected to the dock all the time except when I am updating the playlist from my computer.

Thanks.

I can't think of any crazy new additions that Apple can give to the iPod classic, however Steve said that they would be doing something cool at the end of September and that's normally when there is an iPod and iTunes refresh. I think we'll be getting iTunes 8 finally!

The fact that Apple is giving away the iPod touch and the iPod nano, but not the iPod Classic, in the Back-to-School promotion makes me wonder if there will even be a redesign.

I think when flash memory is available in 64GB that the hard drive based ipod will be retired. Also, the future is the App Store, so Apple will want to drive as many fully size ipod customers to the Touch where they can spend more money on Apps.
I say 256 GB.

However I do believe that Apple will do whatever they can to get a 360GB hardrive. People always think they need the biggest and most expensive model even though an increasingly small minority of them actually do. Its in Apples best interests to give it to them.
Two 1.8" HDs or 1 2.5" HD? I don't think so…

My wishlist for future ipod classics
1. Either remove some features or bump up the processor to increase the responsiveness in menus
2. Increase the buffer size to remedy the random pausing and hard drive clicking.
3. Allow the clock screensaver to be turned off.
4. The requisite increase in capacity to whatever is available at that time.

I like the clock screensaver! What I want to know, though; why does this bother some people? I mean, who stares at an iPod when it's playing music, unless you're really captivated by the album art you might have put on there. However, one thing I would really like is the ability to have a visualizer on the iPod, though I know it would never happen due to battery constraints.

the end of September? I thought it was the begining of September typically...

Visualiser would be great!

Why do people keep saying this??
OS X runs on hard drives without issue, so why wouldnt the iPhone/Touch OS?
Obviously you have no idea how computers work.

OSX on a full computer can run off a hard drive because computers have 512MB of RAM an iPod has maybe 32MB (maximum). A computer running a modern version of OS X has at least a G4 processor running at 867MHz. An iPod has a tiny processor, maybe running at a quarter of that speed and believe me, it's no G4. The biggest bottle neck in OSX running on a mobile platform, however, would have to be the hard disk. The drives in an iPod can run at 4,200 rotations per minute. However Apple must severely underclock them to run at less than half that speed in order to save batterylife. It is 100% impossible for OS X to run smoothly off a 1.8 inch drive that is that slow. Quod Erat Demonstratum.

I like seeing what artist & song are playing at any given time. Maybe some people don't care, or maybe they only have Nickelback in their library, but when you have a 160GB filled to the max, it's nice to know.

Well yeah, but I just don't think it's so much of an inconvenience to just tap the click wheel a little, which deactivates the screen saver. Then again, that's just my opinion.
