What news I have seen says that RDNA 2.0 will ship with the largest and most power-hungry models first (Navi 21) with the models suitable for "general-purpose" desktops and laptops (Navi 22 and 23) shipping later (possibly late 2020, but 2021 sounds more likely).

This tracks with all the rumors that late model RDNA 1.0 will ship with the 2020 iMac (be it Mid-2020 or Late 2020) because that is all that will be available - plus it's all that will physically fit. Plus Navi 21 is going to be a "compute" GPU and not a "general purpose" GPU so it makes far more sense to put it in the iMac Pro and the Mac Pro and then with the 2021 refresh put the more appropriate Navi 22 and 23 GPUs in the iMac and MacBook Pro refreshes (perhaps with Rocket Lake if Intel can actually ship it in 2021).

As to whether or not we will get only one model of "new form factor" iMac available at WWDC and what size it will be, if true then I think it could be the ~24" model since it could have 9th Generation Intel CPUs and mobile RDNA 1.0 (Navi 14 for sure and maybe Navi 10) which would help make it "cheaper" as rumored.

If Apple is planning to launch a 27" iMac in the "new form factor", I could see it being delayed since it will very likely use 10th Generation Intel CPUs and those are just starting to enter the channel. Coupled with higher-end RDNA 1.0 (Navi 10) desktop GPUs, there could just be a parts delay forcing Apple to push it back a bit and it just isn't ready to ship in volume at WWDC.

The above being said, Apple could still announce both, with the ~24" "Available Now" (after keynote) and the 27" available "later this Summer".

This was posted by someone on another thread...

Azrael.

I remember all the possible form factor images of the up coming 2019 Mac Pro that were posted on Mac Pro forum based on the word “modular“. Most looked like a build your own LEGO Mac Pro. No one predicted a return to the classic tower form factor although some people thought that Apple should just to update the 5,1 as they needed it yesterday.

Any 8-10 core iMac is going to be rendering the 3D scenes I want to do in around a minute or so give or take. And I won't have to wait for the 3D viewpoint to update or chug either. It's going to be massive progress from where I'm coming from.

But I will augment the set up with a PC tower. 12 core looks like the sweet spot...in a tower costing just over £1k. I've thought about adding an RDNA2 to it and a NV Ampere for a dual GPU set up. I'll get one gpu. And add the other 'later.'

For sureit will be a big leap.

Never mix and match AMD and NVIDIA gpus in a single workstation. Not a good idea. Let me tell you software isn’t made for this at all.

I think I caught a post re: your work set up re: Nv' 'big boy' GPUs. And waiting for a 'month' (for some medical images to render? OR something like that...)

Respect.

It puts even the best current tech' hardware in perspective.
Yeah. Training takes several days on 10 000 USD GPUs. Ahah !

What do you guys make of this?

I think most evidence is pointing at a June 22nd debut anyway.
I don't get why this guy goes so hard on the "2H2020" point. The second half of 2020 starts in 19 days. WWDC is in 10 days. If they announced it Monday 22nd, they probably won't take orders for it until Friday night 26th at midnight. Sounds about right.

I guess there are always new disappointments around the corner 😔

I'll be happy if they just announce it at WWDC even if it isn't available for a couple months.

It's likely getting the announcement: WWDC, at the least. Probably shipping in July.

Azrael.

You should really stop worrying about bigger, newer and shiny and instead buy what you actually need dude. It's technology, everything is going to be dated less than a year from now.
Not always there is a 50% performance jump between generations this close to each other. And all games will be made to RDNA2 for the next 7 years. That is not ”every year something new”. What I need is tech that stays valid for more than few months.

Yeah. 2nd half is a week -ish after the WWDC. *Shrugs.

iMacs have been 'ready' according to rumours for a while.

Show and tell.

With 2nd half shipping to follow. That could be early or later July.

Crests of a wave come along ONLY so often. And RDNA2 has been long awaited. (Certainly by this Mac 'owner.')

GPUs were in the doldrums for years.

RDNA2 changes that big time.

That's why I watched the PS5 live stream with great interest. Pivotal moment in consoles. ...and it's come to PCs too.

If it's a September release then a 27 incher could tie in with Navi 2. (which has a full stack to choose from...)

Whilst the 23 incher gets some access to RDNA1?

But I don't see it. Apple are going to announce a mainstream Mac. It's going to be ready to ship, pretty much immediately.

With any delay being the end of July max'.

It's hardly a niche Mac.

Digitimes reporting that "Apple's new offerings for second-half 2020 are likely to include a 10.8-inch ‌iPad‌ Air and a 23-inch ‌iMac‌ device". So that could be July 1st release for the 23" but still no rumours of a larger model.

What is weird is Jon Prosser says they are in warehouses ready to ship. Sonny Dickson is claiming it’s coming at WWDC and the euroasian filing indicates an imminent release of a new Mac, so?

These could all be true. It's coming at WWDC. Shipping is a moving target until we hear Apple say so at WWDC.

The 27 inch is about out of stock for the end of June.

So, Apple aren't going to sell any iMac 27 inchers until September? Alongside the launch the of iPhone 12?

Doubt it. Only once before do I remember Steve Jobs issuing an apology for Apple running out of iMac to sell whilst they waiting on the new model.

And there were delays to the laminated iMac models whilst they 'perfected' the process back when.

I'll put my cards on the table for peer review right now: after marinating in all the leaks, rumors, and WAG's including this sometimes absurd thread for some months, I believe the body of evidence leans well towards a WWDC announcement of a new iMac, and availability shortly thereafter.

all your cards...size?

I suspect a 23" has been ready to ship as Prosser claimed and will be announced or released at WWDC. I haven't seen a single rumour for a larger model. It's feeling to me like talk of a 27" (or more) model being released is being driven by consumer desire rather than any industry leaks. I'll be very surprised if a larger model is announced. I think what's coming is an affordable 23" redesign with lower end specs included as optional to have broad appeal.

I don’t believe Apple would leave iMacs ready to ship, in storage from March to end-June. There has been ample time to announce and ship them, even with the virus. Something doesn’t add up.

Size is a bit more speculative, but sure, you've called me out: the large iMac is not going away. I travel a lot for my job. I see iMacs many places. A strong majority of iMacs in the wild (outside of schools) are the larger size, 2/3rds or more.

I believe 2 models will continue forward. The 21.5 is widely rumored to be going to 23 or 24. Less is known about the 27. Watching Apple over the years, and frankly Apple was an early mover into the 27 screen size with many reviewers making that point back in 2009, I believe it logically makes sense that the 27 will inch up a little to 29 or 30. Maybe 32 at the outside, but I think that's only perhaps 20% probability.

I think

21.5 is staying in its current config - same design therefore no new registration number,
23 is being announced as a new design - new design therefore new registration number,
27 is staying current design but coming with new chips which is why its out of stock? (or could very well be the display panel shortages)

ARM devices are probably MacBooks / Mac mini given that there are still 3 portable Macs registered and not out yet

To be fair, if one were to pedantically parse that statement, the 23-inch iMac is "a new offering" in terms of size whereas the 27" iMac is an existing size, even if it too undergoes a new design with smaller bezels and/or chin.

But if it's a significant re-design, they'd want to wait until an event to announce it.

Apple released the 16" MBP with a press release and it sounds like Apple might have done the same with the 23" iMac until COVID-19 closed all the stores (so nobody could go in and look at it before they bought) and the current news events compelled many companies to delay their planned late May/early June launch announcements.

Take a deep breath. An iMac redesign is monumental. It deserves a keynote. Apple could have had plans to do a March keynote which was sidelined by the virus. Or they could have always planned the keynote for WWDC. Either way, "ready to ship" is not necessarily substitute for "there are warehouses full of them." Ready to ship can (and does) mean different things to different people.

The two Mac portable models listed in January 2020 should have been the MacBook Air and 13" MacBook Pro refreshes with scissor-switch keyboards. The set-top box also listed at that time should be the new A12-powered AppleTV 4K rumored to launch any day now.
