Nice, awesome reply on the parts updates. My main point though was just "at this point" nothing is immediately available for an iMac (non pro) update/refresh that would offer any overall substantial upgrades; but if all those parts together will be available in the fall that sounds like a substantial upgrade as you're both saying.
Cool - well, I just bought the 2019 iMac fully loaded with a Pro Display XDR. Can't wait until the fall, so I hope I'm right that there isn't something in the pipeline to be ready and purchasable in June - that'd suck for timing!
Right now - this minute - the GPU is available (lower versions are in the 16" MacBook Pro), the CPU isn't yet but the specs have been widely leaked and stories vary between imminent launch and something in the second half of the year. Only the current world situation puts a curve ball into things.
If Apple thought that sales would be right down at the moment they could just spec bump the existing iMac in a similar way to how they did the Mac mini - upgrade storage configurations using existing BTO parts at little or no cost to engineering - and that would allow them to effectively price the 'old' 2019 iMacs down at third party retailers to shift them.
I've mentioned it before but it would be easy to upgrade HDD to 1Tb Fusion Drive and 1Tb Fusion Drive to 2Tb Fusion Drive, for example.
It's only been 12 months since the 2019 refresh through and an early refresh only to be followed by a brand new model 6 months later makes little sense.
The 2018 Mini was only 18 months only when it got the surprisingly welcome bump which has since been followed up by some cheap refurb deals of the 'old' storage configurations.
WWDC is one such event that Apple could use to launch hardware - even though they rarely do these days - but If North America is in the peak of pandemic it would be poorly timed which is why the stories about prevaricating over when to launch new budget phones have been appearing.
I'd expect Apple to use the 5700 with the iMac. After all with 40 CU, it's a direct successor to the RX 580 with 36 CU. For the Vega class, and thus for iMP, it'll be the rumored 64 & 80 CU Navi 21/23iMac Pro parts are read to go now assuming they stick with AMD RDNA parts for the graphics - the AMD5700 for example.
Yes. And this is enough for me to wait. I will not spend an money on the last year iMac when refresh of CPU/GPU or even complete redesign is in cards. If redesign wont happen, I am ok with that and will buy anyway. But not 2019 model. No way. I want to pass marshmallow test.So the only rumor so far has basically been from CoinX a few weeks ago?
Generic picture. the bezel size is not patented. So the fact that the notch is there at all may mean that they are al least considering that approach with minimal side and top bezels at least. I guess there really isn't much in the middle of a menu bar of a mac screen.Anyone post this rumor yet?
Apple planning Face ID for MacBook Pro and iMac | AppleInsider
Apple intends to bring the Face ID biometric authentication system introduced with the iPhone, to its Mac range, including both portables and desktops.appleinsider.com
The iMac patent is a little confusing; why put a notch in the screen and not make use of the bezel space? Obviously patents don't guarantee anything, but it does seem reasonable to expect FaceID to come to the iMac soon.
The top spec 2019 i9 iMac runs much quieter than its comparable 2017 iMac. Its single thread speed scores are comparable to the base iMac Pro.the 2019 spec bump looks to have tamed this issue
I hope so, I was never a fan of Imac, but AppleTV + made me want to use Imac as a TV with Apple TV, and while there are not many rumors about Imac, the few rumors suggest that new Imac will be released in 2020, and generally The Imac is announced at WWDC and released at the end of the year, and i see no reason why this will not happen this year. Furthermore, the Imac announcement at WWDC 2020 is supported by Coinx citing a new Imac soon, but we will have to wait until June as what will be announced at WWDC 2020 has not been confirmed. (although WWDC 2020 rumors are from generally reliable sources)
Bloomberg: Apple continues work on new HomePod, Apple TV, iMac, and more for 2020 - 9to5Mac
A new report from Bloomberg today dives deeper into the new work from home culture at Apple throughout the COVID-19...9to5mac.com
Another very small iMac rumor, that Apple is at least working on the iMac, with a possible release later this year.
From your link "The company is working on new versions of the HomePod speaker, Apple TV set-top box, MacBook Pro, budget iPads, Apple Watch, and iMac for as early as later this year."
I would be surprised at much of anything before October, especially with current events.
The April 15th date is supposedly set aside for the iPhone 9, AirTag, and MacBook Pro - I fully expected a 14" model. iPhone 9 was ready for mass production and shareholders clearly want revenue on the books - as was AirTag.
MacBook Pro is needed to erase the last of the Butterfly keyboards from existence - and again that might have been ready for manufacture as soon as the 28w CPUs become available.
Budget iPad was only just refreshed last September and languishes on an ancient A10 CPU while the iPad mini and iPad Air get had the A12. I would say it'll get another refresh in September alongside the phones.
Apple Watch seems like an annual event now - it's still a growing product line - so I see that dropping in September alongside phones and budget iPad.
AppleTV set top box was mooted last year with an A12. It may yet get the A12z when it gets released but it seems like a good candidate for a WWDC launch if they expect to boost the tvOS App Store and add some gaming capability ahead of the next generation consoles launching in the holiday period.
October is the traditional MacBook Pro launch window. Suitable Comet Lake H CPUs for it have just been announced but Apple may be waiting for RDNA2 graphics later this year unless we are likely to see Radeon Pro 5300MX and 5500MX in a laptop refresh in time for WWDC.
And finally we get the iMac, which is ready for a complete range refresh alongside the iMac Pro. But when? If we believe the rumour that went round that suggested that we would see a 'new' iMac and Mac mini soon - well, we got the 'new' Mac mini ahead of expectation just 18 months after the 2018 launch.
While this means Apple will be using the Coffee Lake CPUs for a little while longer - at least in the Mini - we could also see the iMac get that storage bump any time up to October but could the redesign be also ready for manufacture?
Who is to say that a 24" 4.6k iMac with SSD only storage, Comet Lake H, and RDNA GPU (AMD Pro 5500-5700) couldn't land in June - a redesigned 'Air' style? It could sit alongside a redesigned iMac Pro which would follow the new style (only bigger). That's the only way hardware of that magnitude gets the early release prior to October.

What about the 10th Gen chips for the MBP 16"?
I think what sublunar meant was an thin and light "air" model (consumer model) that uses mobile processors. The performance of a well cooled mobile CPU is sufficient for most people.Latest rumors and "leaks" say the "iPhone 9" will launch tomorrow and will be called the iPhone SE.
Comet Lake H is a 45W mobile CPU that will go into the MBP 16 refresh. Comet Lake S are the desktop CPUs the iMac will use and those are rumored to roll out within three months or so.
That is Comet Lake H and Intel announced those today (see above).
