I wanted to bump this thread again, because there's kind of a new phase I wanted to add to my initial list, and that is the phase I'm in now and have been in for the last couple weeks:

6. This versatility is amazing.

The original iPad changed my workflow and was assigned several things that my laptops used to be used for. The Pro lineup in general, especially when paired with the various accessories available, took even more of those tasks on. Fast forward to the 2018 11" iPad Pro that I had before this--by the time I got that machine, I started using it for my actual job some days AS LONG AS I didn't have any conference calls or major multi tasking to do that day that required lots of apps to be open at once. If I was just babysitting my inbox and taking some random calls here and there, I didn't mind just leaving my Macbook Pro behind and living on my 11" iPad Pro for the day.

Over the last 3 weeks though, I have been pushing the envelope with my 2020 12.9" iPad Pro, and I made a pretty crazy discovery: I can now fully replicate my Macbook Pro workflow on my iPad Pro--at least the way I use my Macbook Pro when it's not docked on my desk to my dual monitors. With my Mac, if I'm away from my office and not using it with my dual monitors, I just set up Spaces, one that resembles my left monitor layout and one that resembles my right monitor layout. Then I just swipe back and forth between the two spaces.

With the 12.9" iPad Pro, I set up app pairings that resemble the same Spaces I used to use on my Mac. So one space might have Outlook and Slack, one might have my browser with all the tabs open that I need, and one is personal mail and iMessage. This was possible on my 11" iPad Pro too, but because I couldn't run full blown apps side by side, the screen size was prohibitive. Not nearly as big of an issue on the 12.9".

I don't like using my personal devices for work, so I don't do this super often, but it's nice to be able to when I need to. And then when the work day is done, I can pop it off the Magic Keyboard and use it for fun stuff or personal projects. After all these years of iPads, I am still getting this renewed sense of amazement about how I just used this device all day long for my job, and now that the work day is over I can go into full iPad mode and use it like a completely different kind of device.

I know Windows convertibles have been doing this for years, but in my personal opinion it has never been as elegant or sleek as what Apple is doing with the iPad and iPadOS. I'm sure some Windows fans will troll me for that statement, but I have long thought the slow and steady approach Apple is taking with the iPad and iPad Pro would turn out to be the right one, and I feel like that's finally coming to fruition now.

A tale to tell.

Where it's going.

Azrael.

They won't. It's a unique feature. No other one on the market still have this. And I personally find it beautiful on the laptop. And the fact the visualization is programmable, dynamic, changing depending of the app/utilization makes it far useful than fixed, pre-programmed f-keys. It's like the blackberry vs iPhone back in 2007.

It's also what easily separates the Air and Pro to customers, particularly to those that may not be as tech savvy as some of us here. It's also quite a compelling feature for creative pros and prosumers who can take advantage of features like video or audio scrubbing for example. I personally would love a Touch Bar to use with Logic Pro X and have been wishing for a Magic Keyboard with Touch Bar support.

That's the thing about the consumer Macs. It's solder and sealed. Much of a muchness whether Mini, iMac21, MB13 or Air.
The RAM in the mini can easily be upgraded. Not storage. But considering Thunderbolt3, it’s fairly easy to add external storage if needed. But storage upgrade shouldn’t be that pricey.

The RAM in the mini can easily

I always smile gently when people say 'easily.'

That's relative to the ability and confidence of the person doing teh 'easy.'

Nicole preferred plectrum strumming the iMac glass of its gaffa tape as an 'easier' (*looks incredulously...*) than using a simple 'sucker' to pull of the magnet glass off the previous iMac... *Looks inanely at the camera.*

From what I've seen of the Mini. Adding RAM is what I'd say is 'doable' but very fiddly compared to adding ram to the back of the consumer iMac (does it void warrenty?) but a step back from the Steve Jobs twist and turn off lid to get immediate access.

Just as the old 'deadlock' screws on the 'face down' iMac demonstration of 'upgrading' is looooong gone.

Apple has made it harder because it most Mac buyers are plug and play and like it that way.

For the 'many' battle hardened buyers of the iFixit crowd... More power to 'em. *(Counts them...one...two...three...)*

For everyone else?

There's mastercard. £££. Hear that BTO Point of Purchase sound? ££££. Cha-CHING.

You know. I'd kinda like Connor running Apple. He'd...be...

...well...uhm....

Ok. May stick with Tim Sale. I mean Tim Apple...

'That's the CEO of Windows, Connor...' A nervous Craig Fed'.

or...

'He's the guy...who's been lead designer of iMacs for the last ten years...I forget his name...' Craig Fed'.

For those that want a summative read.

Azrael.
[automerge]1595611263[/automerge]

A typically exhaustive Tom's article on RDNA2.

Including summative charts.

We'll get a full RDNA 2 and a 'Partial' RDNA2.

80 and 64 CU.

$999. $699. (The latter more than the 5700XT...but will probably wallop it to death and have Ray Tracing.)

Looks like a wish list to me. After Lovetodreams tweet they are coming out the woodwork.

I think 'Soon' means it could be next week. Or a month's time (which would take us to nearly the Sep 2nd Intel event for those mystery lower clock lower clock Intel cpus.) And that would dove tail into RDNA2 launch territory (depends on 'how late' this year rumours mean on that front. Sept being early fall? October?)

More crashing and kernel panics on my 2018 Mac mini (due to reconnecting a monitor that got stuck in 30hz mode. Classic Catalina).

When can I get an AS Mac mini/iMac with Big Sur...?

Given how unimpressed I am with both consoles so far (this is coming from someone who always buys both consoles), a gaming PC with Big Navi or a 3080 Ti is looking increasingly likely. As a side effect, I may find myself using a more stable computer (love you really, Mac OS Catalina...)

Wohaaa... Not funny.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a kernel panic. I know I saw once when my 750M was fried after 72h of model training...

Have you thought about buying an older version of Mac OS on a memory stick or DVD and installing on an external SSD to get back to the previous 'stable' version of MacOS?

Really unimpressed too.

You can download any version using terminal’s softwareupdate command.

No need to buy anything.

I would first try to reinstall cleanly Catalina in 10.15.6. Maybe it didn’t like an upgrade, don’t know.

No, because I am a lazy f**king bastard. It sucks, but I still cab to anything about it...

What a muppet.

I could get into ML with all that power, couldn't I, pldelisle ;)

You mean they won't randomly announce a HomePod mini? God dammit!

Honestly i can't imagine any product release next week.
I´ll gladly take a new iMac obviously, but i have been looking at their media cycles for half a year now and i don't see anything happening next week because of the iEarth 2030 climate goal announcement. If they had something they had don it this week i feel. Again, gladly would be wrong about it, but unlike this week on Wednesday i won't have my eyes glued to the screen every top of the hour.

For the price of a 256 SSD (nominal pricing now...) and downloading Mac OS previous version. Would save you tearing out some hair... Or back up your data and try a clean install.

On my (now dead iMac...) I did try a later MacOS...but I put it on an external SSD. Was faster than my internal F.F.Sake drive.

I've always been somewhat cautious about downloading the 'latest' MacOs until .3 or .4 updates. But always checking the balance of the forums for what other users are experiencing.

Was that an Nvidia gpu?

Yep. You can only do ML with Nvidia.

You could, only with Ampere.

Backupping and reinstalling an OS is a matter of an hour.

I feel like my 2012 iMac gained years of being of use by just putting a 1TB SATA SSD in it. And i am only rocking the 21,5 2,9ghz i5 with 650M 512MB Gforce. I think that only was the mid tier 21,5.
It's perfectly good enough for 99,9% of the tasks a normal person would do (excluding gaming) and i got all my design uni work don on it without any issues. One really dos not NEED a new one unless there is big Adobe Projects, 3d animation ore 4k video editing.

Did Nvidia gpus just over heat and come off the motherboard?

Is that why Apple fell out with them?

It's about use case. Bold highlights my use case. 21 inch. That's very tight. 24 allows that to breath better.

27 is now 'doable.' (It's what you get used to.)

32 would feel better.

Apple should maximise the footprint at least. Push it to 30 inches.

Shrink the bezels. Put the iMac designer to work. Bring him out the cupboard.

The Nvidia 680MX (and other variants weren't so bad. Mine was in the top ten gpus of that year. I'd had decent use out of it...but when pushed it fell over. iMac enclosure vs Nvidia engineering?)

I found adding an external SSD to the 21 inch iMac model (640 or 650m it was...I have some experience with it...) helped it shuttle info back and forth to add to an overall smoother gaming experience.

Eg. On WoW.
