It would be to any computer maker (except apple). They design things to satisfy themselves not the components they use... Utter muppets.

@Azrael9

Enjoy your RDNA 2, I will be holding out for AS and RDNA 3 ;) It also appears they will be on 5nm...

'End of 21.'

That's too long for even me to wait.

RDNA2 will bring prices back, somewhat, to saner levels. And performance wise (and Ray Tracing...) will get AMD (and Apple...Macs?) back in the game.

October could be busy. iPhone, iPad...and possibly ARM.

iPad in October. (I had the feeling they would after the 'z' udpate...) I recall buying the iPad 3 and they did the iPad 4 half a year later.

Burn, Azrael...burn...

A14x. Should be a thing of wonder. Two gens ahead of the already impressive A12x.

If the Intel iMac is getting delayed, it's not because Apple wants to delay. Apple has every incentive to release it as soon as is humanly possible. Why? A very simple but extremely compelling reason - they need as much time to elapse between the last release of an Intel iMac and an AS iMac.

Think about it. How awful would it be, if a new Intel iMac just came out and you bought an it because you just needed an iMac desperately (many are in this position, such as Azrael), and then a week later the AS iMac came out?? You'd be mighty angry.

However, if you bought a new Intel iMac that just came out today, and the AS iMac came out 6 months later, that's a little better, 8 months better still, 1 year almost acceptable, and 1.5 years later, you're cool with it.

Now, Apple wants to also come out with the AS iMac as soon as possible, to make the transition as quickly as possible, and they have a hard deadline of 2 years, so that's not much flexibility on that end as to when the AS iMac comes out, so the only way to make the gap between the Intel and the AS iMac as large as possible is not to push back the AS iMac, but to come out with the Intel iMac as soon as possible!

Therefore, unless Apple is forced to wait for Intel's latest chips or AMD's videocard, otherwise the update is gonna feel super lame, I predict the release of the Intel iMac is imminent. It's going to happen very, very soon.

But if they're forced to wait on Intel and AMD, then yeah, it'll be ready when those two are ready - and really, it has nothing to do with Apple, who can only release stuff that's available, not vaporware.

And there you have it.

(1)A lame Intel iMac is coming out very soon - early August, maybe even next week

OR

(2)A better specced Intel iMac is coming out when Intel and AMD have the goods, which is generally about the October time frame.

Hope I cleared it all up for you guys. At least now you know what to expect and when. You can thank me now, or later, but I've spoken the absolute truth, that's unassailable.

Oh, and like I argued from day one - THERE WILL BE NO RE-DESIGN OF THE INTEL iMAC!!!

I have spoken!

Excelsior!

But i wonder if the cooling in an iMac is adequate for RDNA2. The PS5 is gigantic for cooling reasons supposedly.

Consoles are usually quite tight, space wise. The PS5 is quite large, though to compensate for the heat as you say.

Though the RDNA2 is 50% more efficient...it's still a large gpu? And AMD are going to clock it high so I'd expect an 'M' version eg. 6600'm' to go into any iMac.

Oh I see what you mean. I used to commute in London 1 hour to work and 1 hour back. It was crazy especially on Picadilly line - awful.
Then work got me here and I walk to work. 15 mins (22 in the winter with a lot of snow) and its awesome.

I don't think I would want to go back to commuting crazy so I totally get you even though I don't know where your place is :D :D :D

Yes. Commuting can take up alot of life.

It sounds like you have better quality of life over there. Getting 1 and a half hours of your life back is alot of time daily and it adds up over the weeks and months.

I don’t know how you can live downtown or on the island. I hate this place. Too crowded, everyone is stacked on each other... yeah you are close to work, but this is not my lifestyle. I largely prefer suburbs for their tranquility. I have a small land but a woodland behind the house. Not a sound on the evenings and nights. Big terrasse, 2 parking lots and a garage. I’m owner of my house contrary to the crazy price I couldn’t afford downtown (easily twice the price I paid just because you are downtown). God bless teleworking for 2-3 days a week!

Oh and Mascouche has been founded by English people. A lot of british history in this town!!! Big sections of the city are still inhabited by British descendants (Mascouche Heights, Garden Drive and around). Some houses were built with the British architecture. It’s very noticeable! We have english schools too. British descendants can put their kids in these English private schools. Unfortunately I’m french descendants and I won’t be able to send my future kids in these schools :(

The road next to mine is “Chemin des Anglais”, or British Avenue ahah

Tranquility.

One of the reasons I like the iMac (except when you attempt to 'push' it...and the fans take off...)

I'm enjoying the chat from the Canadians on this thread. I've never been but it's a place I've always wanted to visit (and most likely destination if I ever migrate from the UK). I've always had the impression that it's a beautiful country...
Ditto! Definitely one of the top places to visitors on my list. Agree on the relocation point too (although I rather like it herre in the UK). Either Canada or Aus for me, I think.

True, and it would be way too hot for me (above 17/18 degrees celsuis and i melt)!
We have a beautiful summer here. We had 5 heatwaves since the beginning of june (5 times more than 30 degrees during 3 days or more).

In montreal, you topically have more than 60 celsius degrees difference between winter and summer.

Just a question and don't take this the wrong way, but why do you have "Azrael" at the end of every single comment? For instance in this post, you have it 6 times! Seems a little pompous, as if everything you say is so 'quotable' that you must have your name attached to it. I'm sure you don't mean to convey that, but that's how it kinda comes across.

Oh dear...hope this is wrong.:( Kuo said Q4.

This isn't surprising to me. It's been widely reported they are starting on the notebooks first this year, and that essentially feels like common sense. I guess I've always felt AS iMac (smaller possibly new size) was a spring thing perhaps, and a larger one would be next fall, a year after the last Intel iMac (coming.....soonish?) Hoping for sooner is likely going to lead to disappointment.

They could calm the disappointment with a new intel based design first, and then the new chips whenever they have in mind. But that doesn't seem likely either. The words lazy and uninspired also come to mind.

Apple plans to launch a 24-inch iMac with a new design in the fourth quarter of 2020, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted a month ago.
That technically could mean 12/31/20 launch, with a spring 2021 ship for all we know...'

..obviously pessimism setting in☹

I've always thought Apple will do mobile solutions first as they need ARM most; MacBook Air then Macbook Pro. iMac ARM sometime mid-late 2021, then perhaps a Mac Pro ARM in 2022 to squeeze in the full move across in about 2 years.

Agree.

This may have been the case when it appeared likely the Intel iMac was going to ship sooner. My take is the situation is more fluid than it appears. Given the slow pace of updates to iMac the last few years, I doubt suddenly there are two big revisions coming 3 months apart or something. Regardless, curious to see how it plays out.

I saw that 'end to end' rail line. I think it was a documentary on the BBC or something.

But it looked like a great way to travel through some great scenery by rail.

Beautiful stuff.

I think it was Steve Jobs that boasted that Apple had become (then...) the biggest mobile computer company on the planet.

And if you're talking laptops, pads and phones...they probably are.

And that tells us what they must do with AS Macs.

The consumer line is a much of a muchness bar form factor. They could do that all at the same time or string it out for maximum marketing. Certainly, I expect an AS laptop 1st.

As CWallace has noted previously, a Macbook Air is a very likely candidate.

Spring and next year's Fall seem likely as you say.

That way, if an Intel iMac drops in August you get to 'enjoy' the Intel iMac for about a year before the bigger AS iMac can replace it.
