Same thing for me.

I don't want to spend 4500$ CAD on a 2020 iMac when the AS iMac will for sure equal it of even beat it with more features (FaceID for instance) while running cooler.

Then again, next years tech usually should beat next years tech.

Setting mine up now! Gotta love apple packaging. This display is amazing (standard glass but still). On a side note, I really can't believe Apple still has not created a way to merge apple ID's. I'm one of the people who has one Apple ID for iCloud and another for purchases and media. I literally don't even remember why at this point, but it can be a pain to figure out how to assign which to which when setting up.

You got it?!?!?

anthony13!

Excellent. The wait is over for you.

Finally!!!

Feel free to get in the driver's seat and floor the beast on the test track...

You say that...

...but I do remember one (or two?) iMac gpu side grades...

But yes. In principle. This should be the case.

(*Looks at the Mac Mini update...the iPadz...the three year old iMac Pro...*)

My bank have flagged Apple trying to collect the payment as fraudulent THREE TIMES now  I'm still looking at a 27th delivery date...if ever.

Have a word with the bank. Explain the purchase. That the amount to be authorised ONLY to Apple.

Had the SAME problem. Apple said this was quite common. So the bank were contacted who had flagged the account for fraud/as if someone else had gained control of the account.

To most people, £1750-£3400 is a lot of money. (And why I ride the Mac division and Cook so hard on Value.)

In fairness, the bank are doing their job to protect you. But THREE TIMES is taking the PISH.

It shouldn't delay the order. Apple will still try to keep taking the amount for up to 5-7 takes after the initial order.

Nothing can be as bad as the price of the RTX 2080 TI, right...?
I really really hope AMD can put pressure on NVidia, even if 'only' up to the 3080 level. GPU pricing is a joke atm.

You say dat...

...but I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia push the price even higher in the absence of competition from AMD.

And you have to ask if a £1200-£1600 is worth it.

To put it plainly?

The 5700 XT 'Pro' 16 gig in the Mac is probably around 50% of the 2080Ti's performance. At nearly 1/3rd of the price.

And it can fit into an iMac enclosure. Elegance vs brute force.

The Ampere is a significant leap forward. (If it's only 40-50% faster than the 2080Ti that will be some beast.)

But the caveat being heat and price.

But we need AMD to step up with RDNA2 (they're probably waiting for Nv' to play their hand...so they can kick Ampere in the nuts with a price vs performance line up.)

I picked up a 8 core standard spec at store here in Australia that had 10% off macs, which had a couple of benefits: 10% off and immediate gratification. And it stopped me going nuts on picking a million BTO options as i have no self control and ultimately I think this is going to be a 2-3 year computer for me not 6 years like my 2014 27" i7, so it's really not worth going crazy.

Hopefully the difference is noticeable vs my 2014!

10% off. Even on a £2k config? That's 200££££ off.

Looks like Apple is using retail to shift these iMac Intels. Incentivising.

Yeah. The BTO options sure suck you in. Waheyyyyyyy! *cash floating wildly in the air.*

A 2-3 year computer. I question whether my incoming iMac will last as long as my last 7 year old one. But then, I didn't press it too hard until year 6-7.

I'll be expecting at least 5 out of my new one. Regardless of what Apple do. I've tried to future proof it somewhat. I'll probably put Big Sur on it and leave it at that for a few years.

And when the time comes to buy an AS iMac, this will serve as a back up machine. It won't be worth anything then so it won't make sense to sell it. A ten core 5700XT will still be useful in 5 years. Despite it being utterly smashed by AS Macs by then.

I only buy tech' on significant leaps. 10-20% isn't enough. I like factor of 4-5 leaps. And this latest one is at least four times faster on cpu. And the gpu is about ten times faster than the last gpu. So I'm looking at 400% and 1000% leaps.

Yes but I won’t be with Intel CPU anymore.

We can be reasonably sure that the new iMac AS powered machines are going to put the Intel iMacs in the shade.

Design.
Thermal.

...and to the sword on...

GPU.
CPU.

At least 50% faster on cpu for the iMac 24. With some bespoke user task eg. 4k or 8k encoding set to put even high end Macs to the sword.

And the ability to (finally) game with perhaps the performance of a 2060 Nv class gpu but optimised which will make this 'raw' performance more potent for the user workload or gaming.

Guessing on the those two points. But the Bloomberg leak said 50-100%. Maybe 50 for the consumer and 100% for 'pro.' Or that may vary according to task. And the gpu...Apple have focused on this re: the iPad. The gpu on the iPad has been one of its strengths. I'm quietly expectant that Apple will surprise with the gpu on the AS Macs.

Apple will fit alot of custom 'user value' on the AS chip with co-processors in vogue.

Even if the 24 inch AS iMac comes in Oct-Jan'. A 24 inch screen will be too small for me to work on.

I'll be keeping a vigil on the 27+ version.

But needless to say the current iMac is the ultimate iMac Apple could ever made with Intel chip. It really cannot be better than now. It's a nice au-revoir for the Intel iMac.

It's hard to believe I placed the order a week ago...

'Processing.'

20th August. :)

Azrael.

On one hand without sound like a complainer, I am somewhat surprised at the wait times. The company ships how many iPhones and devices? How many top of the line iMacs could have been ordered in the last week? I am sure some of it is pandemic related, but still, come on - Most of the core components haven't even changed.

Aye.

It's very much the 'ultimate' Intel iMac.

If we're to be rational for a moment.

Let's remember the original fruit iMac. 15 inch screen. G3 processor. Modest gpu and ram.

This latest iMac is an order of magnitude ahead in all aspects (as well it should be.)

As for as Intel and AMD components go...this is as good as it gets. A lot of towers aren't this good.

5k screen. (Still the jewel in the crown feature.)
10 cores (count 'em.) (Cinebench. On the heels of a last gen 16 core Threadripper.)
5700XT with 16 gigs of VRAM. (On the heels of a Nv 2080 super in some aspects. 50% of the perf' of the 2080Ti with almost a 1/3rd of the price. This will handle most rational work loads and mainstream gaming. And new VCN 1.0 codecs will give 2-3x greater improvments.)
1TB with impressive read/write speeds. (VRMMMMMM! compared to spinners!!!)

The standard tiers are decently priced. And you have the option of 'Nano' glass which probably points at where the AS iMac is going to be.

This is a kick az' final salute to the Intel iMac era.

" It's a nice au-revoir for the Intel iMac." :D

If it’s bto it is build to order. Someone has to collect the parts and put them together, probably for tens of thousands of orders (It is a global release of a machine that sells up to five million in many years).
iphone on the other Hand only differs in ssd space.

I worked on a Mercedes production line as a student (don’t ask what they pay, it Would make you cry how much a student earns There more there compared to a average Job). It’s also essentially bto (car color, car model, extras, region of the world used in) and you would just install some things in a Couple of hundert of them per shift. now don’t ask me how many ? Foxconn is able to dish out in 24 hours, but there is a limit.

If my french is correct "au-revoir" means "see you again". I do not think we see an Intel iMac again :).

I wouldn't read too much into it, the retailer in question (JB Hifi) does 10% off stock configuration macs fairly regularly. In the past it has been "impossible" to get an iMac with their discount though due to all the stock configurations having fusion drives.. gross.

Finally got the thing set up.. migration assistant took a while.

Initial impressions are that the colours on the screen are noticeably more... contrasty... than the 2014 5k. That and its a lot of CPU bars in my iStat menus :D
