Yeah, what you're talking about is the single reason I'm sticking with my iMac Pro tbh, the I/O on it is phenomenal.
Dumb question, not to derail this thread, but is it possible to run the Alienware machine through your iMac for the crisp monitor or is that a no-go?
Guys my 2020 iMac will not start up I tried I different outlet it worked noticed the ram was only at 2117 speed or w/e so I shut down and no it will not boot no Apple logo
EDIT: don’t leave the clear film on that was it.
I didn’t wanna remove if I was gonna be changing ram around. But it won’t turn on with the film on
Check on how to put in the ram properly. 2666 only will happen if you slot the different sizes properly.
I think that is a limit of the chipset. The iMac Pro has 4 TB3. Hopefully that limit will no longer be an issue with Apple Silicon.I actually just realized in all my excitement, I am kind of bummed by the I/O. 4 USB-A and 2 TB3 should be the other way around in 2020 IMO. If I add another monitor and my external Drive, my TB are gone already and I haven't gotten to anything else yet. Eh, oh well.
What RAM did you get?2666 with the Apple ram and the 32 gig kit I bought seem to not work at 2666 unless you don’t do duel channel
What RAM did you get?
I got 16gb apple RAM & 16x2(32gb) from OWC. I was under the impression both together would still run at top speed.
1&3 / 2&4 correct?
Hmm interesting...Well as long as it works I'm ok with whatever configuration.other people have reported same issue as me and the only way to use the Apple ram is to have it not duel channel

Is it recommended to put the new RAM in first before initially booting up the system?

Well only way to use appple ram at the 2667 speed. You can’t use duel channel if you want full 2667 and use the Apple ram for some reasonHmm interesting...Well as long as it works I'm ok with whatever configuration.
Target Display Mode has not been possible since the launch of the iMac 5K and 4K because the custom timing controller needed to drive the display at 60Hz does not allow for it.
I don't think it matters, but I normally install my RAM before I turn on the new machine.
The iMac Pro has two TB3 controllers (each with two channels). I think the Xeon chipset might help a bit, as well, since it offers more PCI lanes, though the MacBook Pros run dual controllers, as well, and they have less PCI lanes (but they also don't have any USB-A ports).

This is one of the disappointing aspects of the new iMac. I was hoping it would have a port line up similar to the mac mini. Now that you can pick up Thunderbolt NVME enclosures like the new OWC Envoy Express at a good price, it would have been the perfect setup for me.though the MacBook Pros run dual controllers, as well, and they have less PCI lanes (but they also don't have any USB-A ports).

If I'm to put my old iMac into target mode to get my files off it...
Do I need a TB3 cable?or fast Pen/Thumb Nail drive?Or could I just transfer the files to my external SSD...and pull them over to the new iMac.
The external SSD has a previous version of Mac OS on it. High Sierra. Or something. (It has been 6 months since I booted into the thing...)
Advice?
I'm buying Windows 10 Home addition from a local PC shop...so I can set up Boot Camp.
Azrael.
Dont waste $$$ on a thunderbolt cable because Thunderbolt 1&2 have a different type of port compared to Thunderbolt 3. So you will need a Thunderbolt 3 to 2 converter plus a cable. If I'm to put my old iMac into target mode to get my files off it...

Haven’t got a frame monitor on but I have Red Dead Redemption 2 running in 4K with everything on high, the best way to run the game because it’s the resolution it was designed at, and by god its not got a single frame skip. The 5700XT with 16GB is definitely a killer GPU worth its salt. My concern has been thrown out the window. My house mate is smitten, I thought this wouldn't match his 2070 Super but he thinks this surpasses it and is in the territory of the 2080 TI due to the RAM overhead, a welcome assessment and something that makes this 5700, and more so, this iMac entirely unique. I'm very happy.
Ive been going back and forth whether to keep my iMac or return it for a the 10core 5700xt 2tb ssd instead of the t3 version I purchased. I think I am going to just keep this and ride out the transition. My only concern is the 512gb ssd being too small but I could always get an external tb3 ssd drive. Also just ordered 32gb kit from owc. I still have a few more days to decide.

Just use an existing external hard drive and copy your files over then over to the new iMac. You can buy a seagate/WD 2.5" USB 3.0 external drive for far less than a thunderbolt cable & converter.
Random News i don't think we were aware of yet:
MaxTech noted on his youtube that this new 27 inch iMac now supports HDR Video playback.
That's a bonus. That coupled with the VCN 1.0 AMD encoding for video and all of a sudden the new iMac is offering some really generous performance leaps. x2 or x3 faster is quite dramatic.
And for me, I'm glad Apple finally boosted the SD card slot.
Update: 14th! UPS Delivery today. (I hope...)
