For sure, Apple won't be holding back Macs just because they released an intel. Intel are old news for Apple. The recent 27" intel was just to hold people over until Apple silicon is ready for the larger model. The iMac Pro also might get an intel update to give Apple time to improve their processors. Apple will release their Apple Silicon iMacs as soon as they can.

Apple once shipped an Intel iMac 3 months after the G5 iMacs?

That was under Jobs.

If you're like me and expecting any kind of mercy from the company that charges you £1k for an iStand...and £700 for iWheels then let me pop your bubble...be assured that Apple will use a steam roller to crush my 27 inch 'Legacy' iMac with immutable certainty.

That steam roller being an AS 24 inch that will draw level or exceed it...at least perform very close to it in general raw performance. But where the AS is going to completely kill the entire Mac Intel line up?

User performance. OS. Games. Encoding. The iPad 'experience'...but for the Mac. The iPad experience makes the Mac experience seem archaic. It's buttery smooth, you can use an iPencil, it kicks the competition's az in performance and has an immediacy and accessibility that exceeds what the Mac once boasted about.

And in some user cases (I predict encoding 4k/8k) destroy it by an order of magnitude. And gpu gaming performance is going to surprise many.

3 months later....6....12 months. Does it matter?

The Leviathon is upon us.

I don't know if the new iMac has a laminated screen, I suppose it is the same as the last year model.
I have read many complaining about this issue on iMac Pro, iMac 2019 and previous models

I think my 2012 (late) 27 inch iMac was the 1st that had it. Think it caused delays. I didn't receive mine until early Jan' 2013.

That must be a factory thing. Quality assurance and control.

Apple is great in making their old hardware look dated as soon as the new one is out. That, people will notice. Especialy with this timeless but old design.
And they will absolutely hold back the next one. Because plans had been made, orders were in place and only because... lets say intel... was not to be able to deliver on time Apple would not breach contract with every other supplier that was able to deliver, did make plans to deliver ect ect
Apple needs to sell this machine. Else it's money lost. Stock holders are more important than consumers. For better or for worse.

Covid is not over. The effects of all of this will be heard for a while. And we might even get another lockdown (like, in the countries that care and can, not america, brazil or uk) when winter comes and people don't stop being more careless again. Germany just had it's highest "infected" per day since may with 1200 yesterday. And we are the country that "handled it well". - So this might even unartificaly be dragged out a while longer anyway.

It's their speciality.

And their marketing, brazenly is boasted and shameless about it.

Satire: Here's the new Mac Mini it's 200% faster than the one we released four years ago...(where we gimped the model by no longer offering quad core and it now comes with Integrated crappics as opposed to dedicated gpus...) :p

I have no doubt that under Cook, stockholders have become more important than customers.

That's a 'bummer.' It's not what you pay premium pricing for.

Well if "most folks" don't know about Apple Silicon because they do not follow Apple, then arguably they would not know about the arrival of a "new" iMac with Apple Silicon mere months after buying their 2020 Intel iMac. And if they do know about it, but don't care, then again, an Apple Silicon iMac launching within months of their 2020 Intel iMac should be a non-issue. They have their new iMac, it does everything they expect and want of it, so they're happy.

I just do not see Apple artificially holding back Apple Silicon models just because they recently updated the Intel ones. IMO, if they have an Apple Silicon iMac of any type ready when macOS 11 releases, that iMac is going to release in conjunction with macOS 11.

Apple will happily release an 'AS' Mac with Big Sur.

A consumer and one pro' MB? Air and MB13Pro models. Easy to do. Basically the same machine. And covers ALOT of units.

Mac OS 11. Ahh....I've waited a long time to type that.

Yes I could see how that would be frustrating if you are in a position where you are interested in Apple Silicon and feel it could be a possible solution, but have to replace hardware now.

And to be fair, I am holding out hope for a major iMac Pro upgrade this Fall even though I am very interested in what Apple Silicon will bring to the table in terms of AIO desktops and am in a position to make the move because I also have a PC for "PC stuff".

CWallace,

You may get your iMac Pro. To me it makes sense. That's premium money being left on the shelf with the current iMac release which is putting the boot into the iMac Pro in terms of value and performance. 50-60% less for something that sticks the boot right in. Adding the 10 core was the least they should have done. I'd have put Vega 64 in the entry too. Still, they know they're going to update the GPU with ...

I suspect they'll put that 'MAC 6600M' RDNA2 chip in it.

Nv' are putting the boot into AMD nice and early with Ampere (at the very least a 'paper launch'...) with AMD's retort coming in November.

We expect another 'quiet' press release iMac (Pro) for then.

A 10 core iMac Pro with RDNA2 will be a very respectable machine that will smash the entry Mac Pro model and most PCs for that matter.

And you'll be able to game on it.

(I will mewl somewhat churlishly that in paying £3400 for any iMac you should have a form of RDNA2 as BTO. But...I also accept that it's not ready. *Points finger at the much 'championed' AMD.*)

And last year's GPU will be more than good enough for task.

Well, yes. I think it's apparent to anyone who's been following my (somewhat tongue in cheek and critical satire...) posts that it is has been somewhat frustrating. A rock and a hard place, as they say. And many have been in the same boat waiting for Apple to update to the 'Legacy' Intel iMac. But we also know the breaking dawn of AS hardware is tantalisingly close. Tim himself calling the release 'by the end of this year.' Likely a laptop or two. But I wouldn't rule out that AS 24 desktop.

We're clearly 'hard core' Mac heads on this forum compared to many who just wander into an Apple Store. So we've known about Apple going plan 'A' for a long time. And it's always been 'next year' or in 'two years' time.

At WWDC2020, not only did we get confirmation that Apple were...going 'A' but the schedule got moved up to shipping a form of 'AS' Mac THIS year. With Ming the Merciless (analyst) chiming in about this fall for an iMac 24...it created a dilemma of choice. Should I stay or should I go? It's a wonderful future but it's not here. Not right now.

I felt AS was a possible solution. And I'd buy a 2nd PC. For 'PC stuff.' However. My files are on Intel Macs. (which I'm sure would be covered by AS iMacs...)

It's not like the AS iMac is available now. Having waited 5-6 months is ridiculous enough. But waiting another 3-12 months for a similar large screened iMac to arrive is not sustainable. If I was a business I'd be losing money. And that would be crazy. So I understand all those other posts from production people and their need for a £££ work machine.

Anyone making money from their iMac or having crippling performance issues. This is the iMac they need right now. Mr. Right Now (as some say...) It's better value than last year's iMac. It performs better. Far better in some instances. (Just take the entry model as an example...)

If you need a compact working environment (ie one iMac with Bootcamp) instead of that two machines...or you just don't like PCs...this iMac represents the finest Intel iMac yet. (iStale design not with standing...Bezels and 1 tiny fan...c'mon Apple...even a tweaked 'warm over' on the design...)

I think a clearer picture has emerged with me going for this Legacy iMac. I have a Legacy Mac. A PC. And rather than replacing this...I'll keep it as my back up / server machine. ...so I can go into AS with a view of augmenting my 'business viewpoint' with an AS iMac and it's deliverance into the land of plenty (The 'A' family with millions and millions of apps and games...and tens of thousands of devs..). (I may sit out the AS24...the screen is too small for me...but if they offer an AS27-32 next fall...)

Interesting discussion above. I glanced through some public beta Big Sur reviews and there's chatter about icons that are looking more and more touchable and interactive. I would suppose that the new, in-house Macs coming out (probably?) next year will be tactile. Interesting for developers/designers, a little worrisome for someone such as me who does not like fingerprints, ha!

At some point...we're going to have a special class of 'touchable' 'AS' Macs. Big Sur is a 'loud' hint. And not too subtle. ;)

To begin with...likely just a transition to AS cpu/gpu and maybe more dramatic form factors.

The the 'special' class of AS Mac with 'Touch' will arrive.

Touching won't be mandatory. You'll still have k/b and mouse.

But for those that like easels (you know it's coming...) and iPencils?

Finally.

Since I can't afford a new iMac, I bought myself a HomePod. Got it at -25% (thanks to my friend working at Apple). So now I can fall asleep while listening to light music dreaming of my future iMac.

Apple do have 0% finance deals with terms over two years.

Top Tier eg. £2300 iMac would be about slightly less than £100 per month?

Delivery 'may' be *delayed* or 'rescheduled' due to operating conditions.

(Sheffield probably felt the lash of a thunderstorm with torrential rain last night...that may explain it. Ie. It got a bit wet.)

Geeze. I could have driven there myself and picked it up...
