what one you get? Also my ram should be here today and the IMac UPS gave me a notification saying tomorrow

3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9
64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB

Just been having fun and games installing the ram, with original 8gb+64gb in it ran at 2133 speed, tried swapping slots but no joy still same speed, if I don't mix apple or crucial ram they both run at full 2666 speed. So keeping 64 rather than 72 for the mo over two slots.

Well done.

Sure, run some tests and tell us how 'she' handles. :)

Azrael.

Fans kick in and speed up for last 20 secs of Geekbench tests (2.30 mins to complete), have had mixed results but with 64 ram in I get these results

But I read many times here on this forum that mixing the stock RAM with aftermarket RAM works randomly. If you can, buy two kits, 64 GB RAM total. Sell the 2x4GB here for someone who wants 16 GB total of "real" Apple RAM. 16 GB is still very respectable for any tier-1 or tier-2 iMac and compatibility is 100% sure for this person.

And you'll be in 4:1 ratio for CPU:GPU VRAM ;)
My iMac already has 2 16GB Ram chips from Apple. I want to add 2 more 16gb chips from crucial, hopefully it all plays nice.

I agree. While the small iMac did not get it's update yet, a ARM release with new design would clearly hurt the Intel 27 incher in it's sales by showing of the future new design and other gimmicks.

Honestly, I expect the folks buying an Intel iMac are doing so because they either need Intel or they feel more comfortable with Intel now and want to see how Apple Silicon pans out.

I think you underestimate the disinformation of average people.

Just a few hours ago i watched a video about apple as a "super stock" and "how much pain" investors would have had to endured in the first decades of the company making it seem like it's some kind of "you could not have known when and if this would have been successful" while anyone informed clearly could have seen Jobs success outside of apple, his moves returning to apple, them getting back on track with the first iMac and eventually becoming a company that brought several paradigm shifts (iPod, iTunes, iPhone and AppStore) to the planets entire society.
Even these "investment experts" just look at the chart of numbers, and not at the stories that happened around them. I was like, of cause you could have seen these things, iPod was super hip at my school, we anticipated iTunes music store finally arriving in germany in the schoolyard. The reasons apple blew up were right in front of everyones eyes.
Still these people tell you, "we would have advised you to invest your money in a different place because Apple was to much of a gamble in the 80s". Theres way bigger amounts of money moved than just for a 2000$ iMac based on hilarious ly little and even miss information.

There is a famous quote from the world of sales. People love to buy something, people hate if something is sold to them.

Most people buying right now probably don't care or know about ARM. If they do they probably won't know what will be gone or possibly better on MacOS because of it. Like, look at these review videos we post here. Some of the "stars" on youtube maybe get half a million clicks. Most get far far less. Yet Apple sells five million of them a year, some even with fusion drive. Fusion drive still was sold to people less than a month ago, and people bought it. Life is different outside the tech bubble.

Excellent multi-core score there, teetoo.

Ah yes our macs may have shared a plane unless they're playing rapid catch up. A shame express doesn't change anything, in my googling I saw in past forum posts (2007! 2010!) people dealing with the exact same UPS stalling measures for new macs and some people in the chat said they just got Express and were given FedEx tracking, no fussing. I guess express does not get you FedEx anymore based on your experience, a shame. At least the end is near and way better than waiting until the 20th!

What I don’t get is that it was cleared for customs in Anchorage, then again in Louisville, then again in Mount Hope, Ontario... and on top of that, today it only moved from Mount Hope to Concord, instead of heading for Montreal... I’m fully expecting it to stop at every UPS facilities and stores in between Toronto and Montreal at this point.

He is definitely right. I never knew what a fusion drive was or that the imac design was stale and had "big bezels" until I accidentaly stumbled on this forum one night while being bored. ive never owned an Imac. I never knew what Ram was, I didnt know that there was even a difference between fusion drives, spinning hard drives, or SSD's. I knew I needed a desktop and the Imac looked appealing because I was used to having apple products. For reference I am a college graduate and I feel like I represent a majority of apple buyers.

Fair assessment.

Dead iMac. Need a working one now. (No AS iMacs are available any time soon. And even iMac24 'could' be anywhere between Oct-March...and the large screen iMac up to a year after the Intel iMac ships.)

Many people can't wait that long. For 'dead' machine, poor production performance...making money off their Mac, or for those that want the 'assurance' of the 'last great and update to date' Intel iMac to see out the transition for all the said reasons?

And BootCamp. For that 'Windows' app or for Windows gaming? There's the best part of 100 million Intel Mac owners that may bemoan losing that feature. It offers extra value? How much value?

It's a 2 for 1 deal that (despite my general moans about Apple reaming...) is hard to beat.

A £3400 Mac with 5k screen, 10 core and 5700 16 gig GPU? Is also the same PC! That's like getting a 2x£1700 beefy towers for Mac and PC and throwing in 2x 5k screens for free.

And like yourself, Master Wallace, I can now view the AS transition from a vigil of comfort.

You probably do. 'Apple' products like iPad and iPhone have awakened the mindshare for more Mac owners. The college crowd really caught onto eg. Mac laptops. iPods. iPhones. iPads even.

Sooner or later that was going to transfer to Mac ownership. And I feel a greater momentum will come with the move to make Macs part of the 'A' Family of chips. As Apple will unify the inside and outside of Apple Macs to look like giant iPads and iPhones to permeate the buying public's mindshare even more.

Knowlege is power. And seasoned iMac owners and Mac veterans have their gripes. I count these moans and groans as broadly valid. The last ten years has seen the Mac division sitting on its laurels...and 8 years with the iStale design brings it's critics along with those whose iMacs have fried due to poor cooling.

The iMac is (somewhat) of a timeless design. Though even trimming those bezels would have smartened up this legacy Intel iMac no end. Because the substantial spec boost inside? Is worthy of a design 'nudge.'

The jewel in the crown is MacOS ofc.

I hope you enjoy being an iMac owner.

It's a decent and fine machine and worthy of the original Mac's computing vision. And the latest model has come of age.

Finally, we have the iMac worthy of its price. There's no shame in a 10 core 5700 16 gig Vram GPU with 1TB of break neck speed SSD. Stick at least 32 gigs of ram in that and 'she' will fly.

And this iMac? Can game!!! Render 3d and slap around video for fun.

It's also available now.

Yeah the multiple import stops in the US are ridiculous. Mine hasn't left Louisville and says delivery tomorrow but fully expecting another last minute switchemup.

I am about to start grad school so the majority of the time i am studying at my desk. Went with the base base model because the only thing I do is read lecture notes lol!! But at 1799 I can read my lecture notes in 5K!! Having a powerful desktop does entice me to start learning how to edit videos and stuff however. I already got 2 16GB crucial because of you guys to add to my 8GB to have 40 GB of Ram. More ram does= more google chrome tabs according to you guys lol.

This.

I figure a year to 18 months before a new large iMac with AS. Then likely at least another year while people complain about what Apple should have done in the first iteration. All told, probably 3 years before things settle down. I could have a nice machine for 3 years and if I'm not happy with the transition, I could run Bootcamp for another couple of years while I make a transition away from Apple. LOL

I think I might be convincing myself to take the plunge.

Well if "most folks" don't know about Apple Silicon because they do not follow Apple, then arguably they would not know about the arrival of a "new" iMac with Apple Silicon mere months after buying their 2020 Intel iMac. And if they do know about it, but don't care, then again, an Apple Silicon iMac launching within months of their 2020 Intel iMac should be a non-issue. They have their new iMac, it does everything they expect and want of it, so they're happy.

I just do not see Apple artificially holding back Apple Silicon models just because they recently updated the Intel ones. IMO, if they have an Apple Silicon iMac of any type ready when macOS 11 releases, that iMac is going to release in conjunction with macOS 11.

That base config' is a bargain. Great bang for buck. General computing powerhouse. Great video performance. Gaming is decent. And with Ram? You can browse yourself to death.

And it's not often I've said that about an iMac.

Apple nailed pricing this time around.

5k. It will be like reading your notes in eye balm. Soothing.

Yes I could see how that would be frustrating if you are in a position where you are interested in Apple Silicon and feel it could be a possible solution, but have to replace hardware now.

And to be fair, I am holding out hope for a major iMac Pro upgrade this Fall even though I am very interested in what Apple Silicon will bring to the table in terms of AIO desktops and am in a position to make the move because I also have a PC for "PC stuff".

Apple is great in making their old hardware look dated as soon as the new one is out. That, people will notice. Especialy with this timeless but old design.
And they will absolutely hold back the next one. Because plans had been made, orders were in place and only because... lets say intel... was not to be able to deliver on time Apple would not breach contract with every other supplier that was able to deliver, did make plans to deliver ect ect
Apple needs to sell this machine. Else it's money lost. Stock holders are more important than consumers. For better or for worse.

Covid is not over. The effects of all of this will be heard for a while. And we might even get another lockdown (like, in the countries that care and can, not america, brazil or uk) when winter comes and people don't stop being more careless again. Germany just had it's highest "infected" per day since may with 1200 yesterday. And we are the country that "handled it well". - So this might even unartificaly be dragged out a while longer anyway.

For sure, Apple won't be holding back Macs just because they released an intel. Intel are old news for Apple. The recent 27" intel was just to hold people over until Apple silicon is ready for the larger model. The iMac Pro also might get an intel update to give Apple time to improve their processors. Apple will release their Apple Silicon iMacs as soon as they can.

My iMac is getting very long and special care. Probably only takes so long because they give me a exclusive second fan xD

It's because you're special, Dr. Don't you forget it! :)

...and how much did you pay Apple for that 2nd fan, Dr.Radon? People want to know.
