It's possible it's also due to the weather here, it's insanely hot these last few days and I don't have any airco.

Thats making a difference, if it's +10 degrees compared to "whatever other time of the year" things will heat up faster.

What machine are you rocking?

Yes and no. Take a look at this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/memory-upgrade-troubleshooting-in-2020-27-inch-imacs.2249254/ The issue seems to be that mixing Apple's RAM with 3rd party RAM results in reduced speed. Rearranging RAM configuration can apparently restore the speed, but drop dual channel, which is a step backwards of another fashion.

So do you think I should just leave it? This is what I was leaning towards to since I dont do anything excess besides studying.

In your case, I would just replace Apple's RAM with your two 16GB sticks. You'll gain both the speed and the dual channel, and likely never bump up against the 32GB limit if all you're doing is "studying", you sly fellow. ? Having said that, this might be a firmware issue, it might be a software issue in System Report, so there could be a fix for this in the near future. Save the Apple RAM somewhere though.

Some benchmarks for tasks that I do very often:

Hello! Im moving from a 2011 too! My 2020 will arrive next week. Very excited by your performance gains. Question: how did you move from the old computer to the new one? I know high sierra is pretty old OS on our 2011s and things like iTunes is still one app on them. Im wondering if moving our data went smooth for you onto the 2020 and if there were any factors we have to keep in mind with our 2011 High Sierras. i do have a time capsule but I was just planning on plugging the two computers in together and letting them do a data migration.

Horizon Zero Dawn
4k ultra - medium: Between 15 and 30 fps, not really playable
1440p - ultra: 35 fps
1440p - high: 40 fps
1440p - medium: 45 fps
1440p - low: 50 fps
1080p - ultra: 55 fps
1080p - high: 50 fps

So this game performs way worse, but this is probably because it's badly optimized. Also when I boot it, it says I should update my drivers, but I haven't found any way to do so as of now.
It's badly optimized for Windows:

As horrible of a tip as that might sound, i recently fixed someones laptop by removing all the cables and putting them back in properly. She also already had a support send in set up. - She forgot to put the power plug into the wall and blamed a windows update for it. -.-

Very smooth. I just made a TM backup and used that to transfer everything. Everything transitions to Catalina nicely. I just needed to re-approve some apps.

Yeah it's 30º inside. 99% of the time it's only around 20º.
My machine is in my signature.

Thanks for confirming. Sounds like Apple has made it almost as easy as restoring a new iPhone from a really old iPhone back up.

This is my first time moving between macs (my 2011 has been good to me for many years).

Could you share some benchmarks?
Happy to, here are the two games I could easily benchmark.

GTA V
1440p High: 150-170fps
4K High: 60-80fps

Red Dead Redemption 2
4K High average: 59fps, low of 46 (I didn’t see it), and a high of 62.

The 2080 TI benchmarks at 57fps at the same settings. This is definitely an interesting brew from AMD and I’m so pleased to have my expectations this heavily surpassed.

Excited for your take on this 5700XT Azrael, it genuinely feels like AMD gave Apple some RDNA1.5 considering the lower power requirements for how much output this GPU has, unless the 16GB is the culprit. The 11GB 20180 TI ($1200USD) can play 4/5k with a few settings cut down while requiring 3-4x the power, and the 5700XT is right there with it based on some incredibly intensive games I've tried. Throw in the value of the 5K display and I am SAVING time/money not building a PC. Unfortunately most of the iMac reviewers are not well versed in the GPU world and kept underrating this card in their reviews. It's a beast, going to see how the system handles sustained high usage today.

I'm gratified to hear early reports of the 5700XT kicking some Az.

Please feel free to share any 'intensive' gaming benchmarks.

I haven't had the chance to run any games benchmarks as yet. Or anything.

But I managed to set the iMac up. Silky smooth as ever from Apple. Buy Windows 10 Pro! Set up BootCamp. (I needed to download the Windows ISO for that...and that took several attempts.). Set up Windows. Download my 'old game' and that took a while.

Had a quick go on that. I was perturbed by the heat venting from the back of the iMac (making the stand quite warm...) and that the fans were going at all. Not amazingly noisy or anything. But I thought a game from 2004 should be well within this iMac's capabilities.

I'm beginning to wonder if the cooling on Windows/Bootcamp needs some attention. Any Bootcamp gamers notice this 'heat' and the fans picking up. Does the fan cooling need to be set differently in Windows.

The Mac side of things is super quiet. But I haven't done anything yet. :p

Aha. Benchmarks.

A coupe indeed! Dragon's tail, kicks az!!!

4k High 50-80 fps? Impressive...on GTA V.

Red Dead Red' 2.

59 fps. Very good. (The monitor refreshes at 60 hz... :p

2080 Ti benches at 57 on same settings?

Humility and humble pie time.

Most impressive...

Expectations? 'Heavily surpassed.'

Fan noise
The fan noise is slightly less annoying than with the 2011 iMac, but it kicks in way more often. Any game or any CPU intensive task (even when short) kicks in the fans quite fast. It's possible it's also due to the weather here, it's insanely hot these last few days and I don't have any airco.

Hmm. Same thing. Slightly 'intense' (I don't count a game from 2004 'intense.' Though I did run it at 5k res'.)

I don't recall the fans kicking in for the game on my old iMac. I'll try running the game at a lower res and see if the fans still kick in.

You know, Apple...there was room for an extra fan...*grumbles*...and a larger heat sink.

It gets quite warm in my attic. I opened the skylight (I've re-positioned by computer table under the skylight...) and let some cool air in. And, along with booting back into Mac the fans have gone quiet.

I finally ordered the RAM.

32 gigs. 2x16 gig sticks. Crucial. £128. Amazon.

Arriving September 7th. Heh. The iMac arrived sooner than that...

Maybe a lesson learned there. 3 weeks for RAM to arrive. I asks ya.

Perhaps I should have ordered direct from Crucial. Next time.

It looks like the iMac 3rd party ram won't play with Apple ram. So I may order some more ram (another 32 gigs ) from Crucial.

But I think 32 gigs will be plenty for now when I slot it in.

It gets warm and vents a good bit but I didn’t see any performance degradation over hours of gameplay today. In regards to the fan tuning, MacsFanControl must need to be updated as it cannot even see the fan inside this computer whilst in Windows.

Just an aside on RAM, I’ve tried every config of two 8GB OWC sticks and the two default 4GB Apple sticks and I cannot get them to clock above 2133mhz, so I have ordered another 16GB of OWC ram because why not best or match the iMac Pro everywhere I can with this thing? Hope the RAM is treating everyone else alright and I’m just dumb.

Yeah Macfancontrol will probably need an update due to the T2. I believe they finally figured out a way to manually adjust the fan in Windows for T2 Macs( I believe I saw that in the update notes earlier this year).

9 to 5 Mac had an interesting article in the RAM matching. It may help.

OWC seem highly regarded. I may as well have ordered my RAM from them. Amazon are on a slow bus.

As for the performance. I've downloaded Cinebench, Black Magic, Unigine Heaven and Blender to begin with.

I'll post benches tomorrow.

But in approximate terms.

Cinebench. 10 core Intel right behind a 16 core thread ripper. (Fans pick up pretty quick.)
Black Magic. SSD? Read and Write? 2000+++
Unigine flies at HD or 2440p. (Fans pick up.)

Exact figures 'Soon.' TM.

Blender Benches running and to follow...
