Yeah, this is a hard one to understand. How expensive could that imp fan retrofit be into the im? They have to be aware of the ongoing fan noise complaints for the last couple years. I don't really get why they wouldn't cure that.

Hello xgman,

Yep. It's the one fly in the ointment. :/

How hard/expensive to retro fit into the iMac? Loads of room. More than in the Mac mini.

And you're right. They must have had ongoing fan noise complaints for years.

Greater power in cpu and gpu. But the cooling has NOT kept pace with this.

They've had ample time (and money) to fix it.

The Good. 10 cores! 5700XT!

The Bad. iStale design.

The Ugly. Cooling.

Would be my summative review.

Azrael.

PS. You can enjoy your iMac Pro safe in the knowledge of cooling alone.

I agree, 1440p is the sweet spot for gaming. When I'm working 5K is really nice for text and images and movies. But when gaming, 5K or 4K is way too heavy and barely noticeable when playing.

The new iMac buries HD and QHD gaming.

The text is razor sharp. A revolution and revelation for anyone pre-retina.

that imp fan

I thought you were talking about the size of the iMac's fan.

Imp in size. Heh.

Shame Apple didn't take (for me) the obvious route and just do the right thing by the cooling.

£1750-£3400 is professional kit territory. It's hardly 'consumer.' And will be used from 3D, gaming work loads now.

It's capable. Very. The cooling hasn't matched it.

My order got canceled and reset and now is supposed to drive 31th of august - september 7th. Now in the phone support queue.

You're order got cancelled?

So you've been pushed by two weeks? Maybe 3?

Geeze...frustrating.

Apple support told me that shipping times when i ordered were estimated based on the old models BTO parts (the f do i know why they would do that, since i even ordered two days after they added it to the store). - Wich btw. we know is bs because the old top of the line model had delivery times starting October 8th before they introduced the new model.

Apparently they canceled this order containing old parts because the new parts are out of stock right now doubling the delivery time. So my order got bumped back and is now treated with priority.

I wonder if i got bumped back because of student discount.

This is annoying. I needed this machine for half a year now. I am making promises to people i am working with.
"We can't change anything about the order, you would get bumped back further because of that!"
What BS is that? - If i would order my configuration right now it would be September 2. - 9th. A meer two days after the new date they gave me.

I will now call apple support a second time because my history with support hotlines is that sometimes two different people will tell you completely different storys or have a different ability within the system to actually be helpful to you.

Annoying. Especially when you've already waited so long for this iMac.

Supply and demand. With sales fobbing you off?

I hope they do treat you as a priority.

It's very frustrating to have to wait 3 weeks longer when you were, apparently, in 'processing.'

I can't imagine that Apple would cripple the imac fan in order to sell more imp's. I think they are just somewhat oblivious to the top end spec pro or gaming user of the imac, to the point that they don't see the fan issue as worth bothering. They can't even be bothered to supply a mouse with a charging plug in in the usable position. Then I also start wondering about the earlier kuo statement about upgraded imp end of year with micro led screen, and start thinking that maybe they actually have something new in mind for the imp, which at this point isn't at all clear. Anyway, I think those of us like minded enthusiasts tend to over think what Apple does or doesn't do. We probably give it more thought than they ever do.

I think fans and heat are why they are going AS. I think we have to look at the iMac over the 8-12 issues and it doesn't seem to have been the priority it once was. And yet it sells more units than the original iMac fruit that saved the company. Ironic. There may not seem to be much wrong with the iMac to the casual eye.

But I don't think the cooling in the iMac is world class.

There's still a chance for an iMac Pro update with RDNA2 imminent...and a big screen AS iMac some distance away.

That and the LED will lead to some iMac Pro improvements. Especially for the price in relation to the iMac's much improved value for money charged. (Won't be able to moan about that for a while...)

Az, is there any chance you can test it in Overwatch @1440p or native res with 50% scaling (can be low settings even) and tell us if there's any fan noise?

I used to play Overwatch extensively on my 2017 5K with the i7 and RX 580 at 1440 with High Graphics settings and fan noise was not too bad. It definitely was not running the fans at full RPM and I did not have to run the sound at high volumes to compensate.

Hello my friend,

can I please ask you to share what you've found out so far? ie. Fan noise, performance in Maya/games. etc.?

As you have config close that what I'm thinking :)

You got the 10 core, right?

Anything will help so thank you in advance. And if I missed it and its been said then I'm sorry. I was in Vancouver so I wasn't reading much :)

I talked to the second support rep and he at least looked into it a bit longer but in the end told me the same story.

I think it's hideous to tell a customer that the order is canceled and just set up a new one (with "as if you ordered right now" shipping times) instead of just updating the order that is already present in the system.

I feel incredibly down and disappointed right now. These people already took 4150€ of my bank account and after 11 days of waiting they essentially just restart my order process entirely while telling me a different story about how i am in priority mode. If i am in priority mode how the f am i waiting 11 days to get notified that my order will arrive the same day as people that order today?

Like this second fuker even told me how he would write down a note right now to make sure i get a e-mail when the order process moves on to shipped. YOU MEAN THE SAME FUKKING E-MAIL EVERYONE AUTOMATICALLY GETS?

Theres nothing i hate more than being patronized and lied to.

Sh*t company.

But do you think it is at all possible that imp (maybe even along with the rumored 24) will see a redesign before the regular imac? I guess it's possible if they are revamping the display.

@DrRadon - can't believe that crap, you've gotta get it escalated to a manager level - for sure they'll be able to do something about what's happened, even if it's a sweetener of some kind. I don't think it's because it was an edu order (my Edu BTO only took 7 days to arrive), it's just a massive screw up on apple's part.

Keeping fingers crossed it gets sorted asap for you

I've noticed a few little glitches every now and then with the screen, just little break ups, sometimes when window is moved and only effects a small part of the screen. Hasn't happened lots, but seen it maybe 5-6 times and happened again today, have the 5700 XT 16 in there??

Called them a third time.

Now the support rep tells me i can call them again after the iMac arrives and get 10% of this order to be taken of the next order. Thats at least something, looking at around a 400€ discount in that case. Looking at a "almost free" Apple watch 6 or 2020 iPad appeases me a bit... but in the end thats just toys and i have actual work that needs to get don...

What i assume is that they ran out of the larger SSDs and so someone just got my machine (or parts of it) with 512GB while i am now in the dumps waiting for the full assembly for when they got new SSDs.

Hate it.

My guess is the initial production run was 512GB systemboards for shipment to Apple stores and because it is a "standard" configuration.

BTO boards with larger SSDs and GPUs would have been next, but it is possible after the initial run they are now doing them on an "as-needed" basis so that would increase the shipment times.

Now the tracking website tells me i need to pay for the new order and need to update my payment data. In that process they obviously took down my date of delivery completely again.

Hilarious.
