One thing I really didn't like (and still don't) is that none of the Apple stores I've tried have the nano coating on display. So its basically impossible to see what you are getting. I could understand with the XDR but with iMac? Now I have to order it and then decide if its worth it or not. Or maybe, is Apple doing it because its super sensitive and requires careful maintenance so they fear it would wear off very quickly in the stores? Either way, I feel that we should be able to see it.
its a lot of money

It looks better than the old laptop matte displays from what I've seen. As long as people don't sneeze on their displays a lot...or touch it...and use the 'special' cloth occasionally... Should be just fine.

You'd probably have to be 'rubbing' it a lot to damage the display. As long as not with any abrasive cloth.

For those who don't like glossy displays. Probably a steal. Something that ISN'T on the iMac Pro.

£2299 Tier 3 plus £500 Nanon. Plus the 1TB SSD?

£3k?

From oToy.
Just to be clear, these are still early numbers and have a +/- variance of 7% or so, but one thing that will likely hold is the relative performance in OB between these GPUs :
Radeon Pro Vega II Duo - 412 OB*
Radeon Pro Vega II - 206 OB
Radeon VII - 200 OB
5700 XT - 170 OB
Vega FE - ~161 OB
Vega 64 -~148 OB
Vega 56 - ~117 OB
Vega 48 - 108 OB
5600M - 108 OB
5500M - 77 OB
Vega 20 - ~50 OB
Intel iris 640 - ~17 OB
Intel iris 630 - ~15 OB
Apple A13 - ~15 OB

What score does it get? One Vega Duo in Mac pro gets 415.

170.

Impressive.

Blizzard WoW bench update.

If you want to run WoW in 5k with Quality settings on 10. 15 fps. (There are limits. And yes. The fans do kick up a fuss.)

I think I managed to run at 5k on setting 5 with fps in the 80 fps+.

2440p (update.). All settings to the MAX! 100FPS. Smooth as butter. And that's probably the setting to play on. The 5700XT just crushes this setting.

There's not much point at running on 4k or 5k on this. The appearance of the game doesn't change that much to justify frying your gpu.

The critical comments are:

iStale design.
Poor cooling. (Doesn't like hot/humid environments whilst trying to bring it to its knees in gaming or 3d renders.)
You pay a high price for the BTO parts: 10 core and 5700XT 16 gigs of VRAM as well as Nano glass.
The best value is probably in the Tiers. Which is amazing for Apple.

What did you have and what did you not like about it, please?

It would be nice to hear critical comments also so please feel free to share everything even if its subjective. It would help some of us to decide
I was on the fence with upgrading anyways. I’m currently back on my 2012 iMac.

I just didn’t feel like spending the cash for something when AS Macs are coming up pretty quick.

I had the tier 3 iMac and it was good .. I just wasn’t blown away. The screen was beautiful but I can wait it out for now.

I originally was going to purchase the 10 core / 5700xt and larger SSD but the price was just getting out of control for something I might replace next year.

The only issue I saw was the fans would ramp up pretty quickly and it wasn’t quiet.

Oh ok, thank you.

I might order one too and test it. See if I like it or not and then wait till Oct to see what AS brings. Then revisit the plan :)

Will imac run cooler with lesser GPU? I didn't upgrade gpu just the base one.

I'm only using it for Logic Pro X.

Higher performance GPUs will generate more heat when under load, but not sure if they are by default hotter when not under load (I would be inclined to think not by much).

You also have to consider a task is a task, and a more powerful GPU will actually handle some of them cooler/easier than a lower model. If you are going to push an absolute crush task, well, they all will get hot - the only way to answer the question is a vague, 'it depends.'

Impressive.
It is the 16GB ram on the GPU that is more impressive because with alot of the non-workstation grade cards you don't get that amount of VRAM.

Otoy is going to get Octane-X running on Ipad/Iphone as well. I was going through all the WWDC videos relating to the new CPU/GPU architecture and I am still sceptical how well heavy GPU tasks will be executed on this unified architecture. Given that both the CPU & GPU will be sharing the same system memory and the constraints of the size of the GPU on the die.

same here, mainly using for Logic Pro X too...got the 8 core and I’m hoping there’s not too much fan noise with Logic. I record most things direct anyway so it’s not like the noise would interfere with music making but I just don’t want to be annoyed mostly. ?

Does so many people use headphone or something. Sound is never the issue for me just trying to keep temps down only thing I care about.

Fans would get noisy on my 2007 MBP so I was used to it. Anything quieter will be a bonus. I'm also hoping it stays mostly quite though. I went with the 10 core...I didn't have to but it's my first mac since 2007 so I just thought I might as well.

According to me, Apple will introduce it's new products in 2021. As 2020 is surely not going to work well for product sale and advertisement.

Otoys' Octane-X has been ported to metal (but not officially released) and is the only rendering engine on mac os that is using GPU. The results are pretty damn impressive on the 5700XT.

*nods. I thought so.

It's only behind the 'non gaming' Vega stuff which were compute monsters or the 'dual' gpu card.

That IS impressive. And it's in an iMac.

It's quite simple. If you run this (or any other computer on the edge...) you will get 'some' level of acoustic noise.

Unless it's a Mac Pro which costs £6k just to get into the club. Or the iMac Pro. The cooling of which should have been ported over to this level of performance.

Azrael.
