My 2020 iMac 10Core, 5700XT standard glass display review:
It was about June I let myself realize I’d be working from home for the next year. My career typically keeps me flying city to city all year. As such My 2017 MacBook Pro has been my workhorse for years. In fact I haven’t had a ‘desktop’ computer since the
first Intel iMac. My make shift work from home setup (seen below), had me using my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro (with sidecar). As slick as I thought it was for the first month, my eyes rebelled against the small screen, and my graphics card rebelled against my increasingly 3D rendering intensive workflow (mostly drafting programs).
The waiting was the hardest part. Typically I’m a buy it when you need it kind of person when it comes to computers. But all the rumor sites suggested an iMac refresh was pending
any day. We all know how that went. I’ll cut to the chase, I bought an intel iMac at the end of the intel era because I want a machine to carry me through some anticipated software snags in my field.
So, the machine. I’m not a bench mark type person, I’m just not knowledgeable enough to give numbers on performance here. What I do know is this; this machine is very fast compared to the 2017 MacBook Pro I’m coming from. In Vectorworks, the primary program I use, I am now able to move the camera around in 3D without a wait time. The high quality render’s are now my default, as opposed to the generic ‘high performance’ settings. And ETC Augment 3D, a lighting program I could barely use on my laptop, sails with no fans on this machine.
The fans are present at other times though, and that’s new to me. Sure the MacBook Pro has fans but honestly, I was typically working in coffee shops or Economy Plus; in other words I had headphones on. I’m getting used to this idea that I can literally
hear productivity. That’s how I contextualize it for myself anyways. Fans! Renders! Pay checks?! Someday…
The design is awesome. I’d love to tell you it’s ‘stale’ as so many have said, but honestly this is my first iMac in this form factor and it feels great for me. It feels
essential. Not minimist mind you, but essential. These bezels are big. Because at the time it was designed, this was the essential bezel design for the technology needed? Sure there’s always a smaller technology, but I can tell you this is the best display I’ve owned. So if these bezels are the price of this display from Apple this year, than that’s the price I’ll gladly pay.
I mentioned my eyes were struggling before, but so was my back from sitting all day. So I also acquired a new Vari desk (great product, recommend if in budget). The stand of the iMac actually works well with a standing desk, as I can pivot the display’s angle to an optimal angle.
I do wish it had the iMac Pro cooling system inside, as that seems so obvious, and almost haphazardly not present. I enjoy the gigabit ethernet port for the future. I appreciate the up to date bluetooth standard. I’m bothered by the lack of wifi 6. Another thunderbolt port or three would have been nice. I wish this had target display mode, so that when we all eventually live in an apple silicon world, I could at least use it as an external display eventually.
Overall, very happy with this machine. Thankful for the advice from fellow forum members and ready to create.
