This isn't Blender Benchmark territory. Or Z-Brush benching.

...just an example of one of the demo models in Z-Brush you can load up...and the kind of thing any 3D modeller might make.

It renders lightning quick.

The fans do a random pulse and go away. (Not during the render of this....just during me browsing Z-Brush's project folders... Strange.)

Here's some Dante's inferno lighting for the male figure in Poser Pro 11. With a Mini Car prop.

Erm.

This iMac is blazing melted butter off a shovel fast. I can't say I'm a fan of the way the fans pulse in. That will annoy me.

I think for this. Apple should have deployed more discrete cooling...for more discrete 'fan noise.' The iMac is so quiet the rest fo the time...it is somewhat bordering on obnoxious.

Yes, the fans do kick in. Which, for Poser Pro never happened on my quad core 2012. But this is a level of performance my quad core could only dream about.

Hmm.

The 3d model preview window also demonstrates a level of speed not previously experienced. But I feel Poser Pro could be optimised more for the Mac...for the 10 core at hand and the gpu power available.

But it's a significant upgrade on the sluggish behaviour on my previous 2012.

It seems cpu related to me. I wonder what watts the 8 and 10 are running at.

14+++++++ based.

It's a shame Intel couldn't pull their finger out on a 10 node. And Apple included the iMac Pro cooling.

What might have been.

You can't always get what you want. But you get what you need?

I feel a Rolling Stones song coming on...

Smooth Work Azrael. Nice to see you getting your machine a work out. I'm working on some 3D symbols today of some light boards. Drafted in Vectorworks, I haven't applied textures to this one yet, but even with lighting options set at max this went fairly quick.

64 gigs. Nice. An ocean of memory.

Good job, Anthony13. Sounds like your new rig is giving your workload a beating of speedy proportions. Lights to the max, eh?

Sounds like you enjoy using Vectorworks.

Be nice for us to see more when the textures are applied.

Good stuff.

Super Super happy with Final Cut and the iMacs performance on it so far.

Glad you're happy with the Final Cut performance.

For my work use, it's an order of magnitude faster.

Pulsing fans not withstanding.

I got my RAM installed today. Didn’t bother trying to get the stock memory to work at full speed with the 2x32GB Samsung modules. Seems like a lost cause.

I finished transferring data and installing apps. Everything seems very fluid. Very happy, but I haven’t done anything to really push it yet. I’m waiting for Fusion 12 to release so I can make use of the free personal license for my lab.

Try 'pushing' it and see how long it takes for the fans to kick in.

For me. 10 cores seem quick to spike to fans. Anything gpu related takes longer.

The fans come on real quick for any kind of rendering in 3d. Even modest stuff.

I pumped up the poly count to near 1 billion points last night on Z-Brush.

The gpu seemed to handle this np. The cpu seemed to be kicking in on the render though.

How are you happy with the 5700, please? And how are the thermals on this config? I'm currently testing 8core with 5500XT and so far its great. GPU is actually better than expected but I'm still gonna go with 5700. Just wondering between 5700 and XT version (although I feel normal is probably more sensible).
So, what is your feedback etc. please?

IMO, the 5700XT and 10 cores are options "needed" when you use your Mac as a living. As a software engineer, I'd go 10 cores, but not 5700XT. If someone make rendering all day long or graphics intensive as its job, the duo probably worth it. Unless, hard to justify a 505$ CAD upgrade for CPU and an additional 250 $ CAD over the Radeon Pro 5700. I'd take the 5700 for maybe resell value (if it will have any) and I feel it has more power for driving 2 4K external displays.

Yeah, I agree. I just need few people to level me otherwise I might just be unreasonable and get something silly.

:))))

If I was doing rendering for living I think I would be on Mac Pro or iMac Pro with 18 or more cores. So yeah, that all makes sense.

On this base model tier 3 I feel all is good and the only bottle neck is GPU (but not actually bothersome) and the 8GB ram. The rest seems super fine. So when I bump it to 32gb + get the 5700 then that should be golden config.
I just have to try the nano coating to see. :)
That is still an unknown element.

I think Mr. P' has chimed in on this. Basically, previous iMacs weren't this powerful.

Let's break out some numbers from my 2012 iMac to now.

CPU. At least 400% faster.
GPU. At least 1000% faster.

8 gigs of ram vs 32 gigs of Ram.
1TB FFSake drive. vs? 1 TS 'holy crap that's fast' 2700 BRUM BRUMMMMM chugger...chugger...

All in the same enclosure. With the 'same' tiny fan.

It's an order of magnitude faster. Intel haven't kept up on process. AMD haven't really kept up on gpus.

That said. For me? The 5700 is the star of the show.

I couldn't believe how many models I could load up in Poser 11 Pro. And I could 'waheyyyyy!' the rotation in the modelling window with full lights. No chug.

XT version. If you need absolutely need the vast amount of VRAM for textures and modelling or you have any doubts..? It's the 16 gig VRAM for the here...and the 'now' in two years. The 5500XT and more so, the 5700 will be great value options. (The latter of the two.). 5700 'sensible.' 5700XT if you want the insane vram.

I'm very happy with the 16 gig XT. It's a wonder for an iMac enclosure. :O

If I was a VFX artist? (Which, I kind of am... ;) I'd go for the 16 gig of VRAM. Just keep loading it up and watch it go.

If one was going to buy the iMac Pro anyway. Then you could get the 1TB SSD, Matt display, 8 core and the 5700XT for £3500(?). (I haven't priced it up...just ball parking.). And you'd still save £1500 on the iMac Pro and beat the tar out of it.

Sensible. Yes. But there's nothing rational at times, with Macs. We want the world...and that may not be enough.

It's not the bezels, Freida. The one thing that just wrinkles a bit? Is the cooling.

The Intel CPUs are right on the edge. (...they're the reason, Apple have had enough and are going AS.). The performance is impressive. But they really dropped the ball on process. But that doesn't absolve Apple for not putting in better cooling. Ironic. As they pushed the display aspect with the matt. We even got the 'wow' XT. ...and ten cores?

But not to cool it. We've seen the Max Tech' videos. So. There's always a price to pay. In thermals. And for the machine of our dreams. And the gpu of our dreams...it seems.

All I can say is that the fans pulse in on the ten core. I think the suspect is the cpu. Not the gpu from my tests.

Have you tried rending on your 8 core machine in Maya? Do the fans kick in?

I guess want want unlimited power with unlimited quietness.

It's not rational. The rendering speed on this phenomenal. But the fans do kick in... That is the price of power. In a 'razor' thin computer. Quietness and performance?

That won't come until AS iMacs. ? ? ?

Poser Pro 11 crowded scene. Ray tracing. Lightwave 3D detailed models. (You've seen the Jade Dragon render...on the other page?). Z-Brush 1 billion poly models (zooming around) or 'hair' renders. This iMac blows the bladdy doors off. But the thermal bus is on the edge of the cliff. It's fall down stairs fast.

In summary. I won't be working this as a 24/7 render box. I have forthcoming PC purchase for that. I don't want to 'fry' this through abuse.

I want it to serve as a lead product and work machine. It can handle burst video, 3d, modelling, 2D print documents all with ease. For continuous heavy lifting I'll subject the PC tower to that.

The iMac is now 'Pro.' It is powerful. As the Emperor predicted.

I haven’t done anything that would show a difference to the 5500xt yet. I might get some time today, so if you have anything specific you want me to try, let me know.
I was on a budget so I couldn’t just max out everything, and was choosing between the 5700 and 2TB SSD. I decided to bump up to the 5700 based on 3 things:
  1. On paper at least it just seems like a more balanced system. One step down from the top CPU and GPU, plenty of RAM, decent amount of internal storage.
  2. I can easily supplement the 1TB SSD with an external drive if needed.
  3. The shipping time was shorter for the 5700 than the 5500xt.

I had a bit of time to run a few benchmarks today. I've had it 2 days now, so I think all the background tasks should have normalised.
Geekbench Single-Core 1307, Multi-Core 8664, Open CL 46435, Metal 51427.
Unigine Heaven 2560x1440 Fullscreen Ultra 66.8FPS, Score 1682.
Blender BMW 2:43

Geekbench scores are average of 3 runs, Unigine and Blender are just a single run.
The fans were doing their thing towards the end of the CPU benchmarks, but I didn't think it was excessive. The fans in general use have settled down, and I can't hear them unless I put my ear right up to the machine. I'm in a central city apartment though, which isn't the quietest, so YMMV.

Oh, and I solved the feeling of the screen being too small compared to my old 40" screen by moving the iMac closer.

With the sudden, but not unexpected, outlook to work at home due to COVID-19, I bought an iMac as well. I thought I was going to wait for the 24 inch AS iMac but I do not have time for possible software issues or wait for a new machine. I still think the current machine is beautiful so I am fine with bezels and all.

So what did I buy?

i7, 5700 (no clue if it gives any value), 16 gb (I am old-fashioned and closes apps I do not use), 4 Tb as I likely make some videos in the future. Nothing fancy though. I might also need it for caching Onedrive as I have a slow net. The camera, speakers and microphones are additional features that are good to have for home work and to create lectures.

That 27 inch screen will make it a nice private space for watching movies - I have saved watching LOTR for this big screen. I am very tempted to buy B&O H9 to go with this setup but I wait for the Apple AirPods Studio before deciding.

What do I have now? An university issued 2013 MBP, 2.3GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, 750 NVIDIA, 512 Gb. It is not slow but it is small screen for extended homework and the fan starts when videoconferencing. It gets relegated to lab/teaching work and will happily live there for years to come. No, the Uni will not pay for an iMac I find suitable :).

New iMac next week.
Apple used the keyword in the YouTube video for the keynote.
Shipping times for the 21.5 models are also suggesting a new small iMac by the end of September as shipping times have gone up to September 24 - October 2ed.

These might be just intel tiger lake after all, with the event happening two weeks after intel released them. xD
That would be so funny after all they sand castles in the sky that have been build here. :D

appleeventkeywordsmetadata-1.jpg

I imagine that the inclusion of WWDC also suggests the announcement of Pro Apps for iPad. Despite no iPad Pro being in the tags.

Gratz, iPadified.

Hope you enjoy it.

That 5700 will give you a balanced system. Plenty of bang for the buck.

4TB, eh? Plenty of room on that.

16 gigs of ram? (At least you can at more RAM affordably at your leisure later. I managed for years on 8 gigs.)

Those scores sound about right.

And plenty of bang for the buck with the 5700? Those Unigine scores in QHD are sound.

Yes. The fans kick in towards the end of Cinebench or Blender (the loudest I've heard them...) and any Z-Brush or Poser Pro 11 render work that stresses the cpus.

There is very low key ambient fan 'noise' but you'd have to really put your ear to the machine to hear it. (Well. I can hear it from where I'm sitting in front of the iMac...but it's not 'loud.')

Yes, I can always add later but I am never experienced cramped RAM space unless I do some stupid things in MODO. How can Word take 2.8 Gb of RAM?
