It will be based on A14.

But it won't be A14X.

The Mac needs its own silicon. Not an iPad silicon. Srouji said it.

He says tomato she says tomato...

It will be derived off A14. As in 'based' off. Yes.

A core tech' which can be phone A14, pad A14x or Mac 'AS.' AM. (Apple Mac?). ? AS as a stand in for now. It's what they used in the WWDC announcement. But a more specific name than that? Maybe. Apple knows.

With each...their own...nom de plume.

Azrael.

I really can't wait for the AS to be out. Really wanna see the performance/benefits so this speculation is finally behind us. Unfortunately, that is still 2-3 months away and even then we will just get some crappy toy product like the macbook.
Wanna be courageous Apple? Why don't you do Mac Mini too this year and show us what you can do when you are actually TRYING! :)))

What is the word on the 9/15 event? Any thoughts on AS being discussed revealed then?

Well, asides iMac there also is a MacBook Pro in thetas. I would strongly suspect this to be a full intel lineup for Macs. Makes sense to have a fully focused ARM event in October or even November so the new machines don't pale besides iPhone (wich, lets be real, everything dos in the public perception)

Dr! Those tags are just to attract searches. Not the list of products unveiled. As you can see, there are tags that are past (like WWDC, iMac etc.).
I know you want your new iMac to be obsolete next week but lets be reasonable here. :p

Mac mini.

Now.

Courage.

I'd like one of those Mac minis. Imagine. Actual GPU power.

New iMac next week.
Apple used the keyword in the YouTube video for the keynote.
Shipping times for the 21.5 models are also suggesting a new small iMac by the end of September as shipping times have gone up to September 24 - October 2ed.

These might be just intel tiger lake after all, with the event happening two weeks after intel released them. xD
That would be so funny after all they sand castles in the sky that have been build here. :D

I imagine that the inclusion of WWDC also suggests the announcement of Pro Apps for iPad. Despite no iPad Pro being in the tags.

Sorry but it doesn't mean much. It's like keywording your Youtube video to get more views

"Apple is clearly trying to hit important keywords to attract those searching for related terms, but aside from the Series 6 mention, these are all existing products and it's difficult to determine what else we might see at the event."

Bingo.

I can't believe the amount of attention this is getting. Anyone working in a digital agency can tell you what's there is BASIC keyword strategy, 101. Even IF Series 6 wasn't getting launched, there's interest there to drive traffic to the right place.

I am interested in 2 things - Benchmarks VS real world performance.

I have a suspicion the bench kiddies will be ablaze with their numbers, and I absolutely believe Apple is going to optimize OS11 and AS to crush common tasks like decoding and rendering, and other creative tasks and that will be great. But I want to see how it holds up with 'true' multitasking, and other day to day work - that's what will make it really have power. Right now I see it even on my iPad, benchmarks are great and all but run a bunch of HTML5 on tabs in Safari and I am quickly reminded I am on an iPad and not my 'computer'.

Maybe the Big Navi (or variation of...) will go into the iMac Pro and the Mac Pro?

Between the price cuts on the W-2200 Xeons and the rumored price cuts on Big Navi now that nVidia has announced the 3000 series, if there is a new iMac Pro, it might come in at $3999 instead of $4999 for the base price.

With today's rumor that the A14X is entering mass production in Q4 of this year with a production rate of 5-6000 units per month, that makes me think products with it will not ship until Q1 2021 (to allow time to get enough SoCs on hand).

So the idea of a 2020 AS MacBook using the A12Z as the first AS Mac is making more and more sense to me. Then Q1 in 2021 comes the new iPad Pros and the ~24-inch iMac and 14" MacBook Pro, all on A14X. And then later in the year a larger iMac and MacBook Pro, quite possibly with A14X, as well, but also with the new Apple GPU.

Yeah, exactly. Interesting times ahead. I think it is safe to assume that it will be pointless to buy anything now that we have iMacs. I feel that in 2-3 years we might get something that is truly worth it. By then stuff will be optimised and software will be out. All will be good and settled

Precisely - no interest in first gen of AS. 3rd Gen, we'll talk. I've learned ;)

I expect my new iMac 2020 to be my daily driver for up to 5 years.

Quite a short time for such an investment. My 9 year old workstation is will working fine. Was a considerable amount of money back then and suffered from many upgrades since, but is still my compute node today. 5 years is short I personally find.

It all depends. I am treating it like a NASA mission - I have an expectation and then I also know it will have some useful life beyond. I can't imagine having this design 9 years later, or almost 20 after introduction, ha. I know 2 TB3 ports won't cut it 5+ years from now. I am also accounting for not knowing what the transition holds. I am reasonably sure we'll see decent OS updates for a few years, but no way will we get 9 or software support for aging software thereafter. I can't put that in the model.

To me, at 5 years, the total cost works out annually to actually be a few bucks LESS than what I pay for the iPhone Upgrade Program on my 11 Pro Max - not bad. I am fortunate enough to not care too much either way financially, just keep it somewhat reasonable or the wife will give me that side eye...

The Macbook is the the ultimate AS product. Ergo. It takes the bow 1st.

Power. Efficiency. For the killer market of laptops.

Massive differentiator.

An iMac. Cheaper than getting an iPhone every year. For me.

And I can do a lot more with it.

Although I agree with the sentiment I approach it like this:

I usually keep my computers for 3 years and sell them just before the Apple care expires. It gives me peace of mind and buyers feel the same as they have some warranty left. Usually, the value is quite good as well.
The reason I am doing this is because Apple repair prices are insane. In the past 6 years I had logic board etc. replaced few times and the cost of that is close to a $1000CAD. If I didn't have the warranty I would have lost way more money.

If the warranty was 5 years then I would have the computer for 5 years. I don't have to have the latest and greatest but I just want to have good value and peace of mind. Thats why the 3 year cycle with Apple Care works for me.

So that is what I'm planning to do with this new iMac. Keep it for 3 years and then AS will be ready by then and this Intel will still have some value. After all, all Intel will go quite fast so I really don't want to hold ancient tech that no one will eventually want and support will die. As we all know, its all about developers :)

So yeah, I agree with you but at the same time I feel its a bit risky so thats why I have different strategy. :)

Tomorrow we should have the announcement of the AMD Big Navi (Radeon RX 6000). Hopefully we will see them soon in a new iMac with Apple Sillicon.

Release date for Navi 21 is believed to be end of October: https://www.techradar.com/news/amd-big-navi-will-rise-up-to-tackle-the-nvidia-rtx-3080-on-october-28

So we might see a Mac Pro Navi 21 Radeon RX 6000 by the end of the year. I expect if there is an iMac Pro update it will use Radeon RX 6000 Navi 22 or Navi 23, which I am guessing is later this year or early next year.

As for Apple Silicon, as others have noted, those will use Apple GPUs.
