Why would they get bigger? All they need to do is reduce the bezels and instead of bezels have more screen. That way its physically the same and you get more screen estate.

I'm not a fan of the dropshape style so I would prefer the XDR. If we get the vent holes too that would be awesome. Love that design

But then they will likely get bigger/thicker. *shrug* We'll soon find out. I do like the thinner sides on the IMP. I think killing the 'chin' could be hard.

They’re not going to call it an iMac Pro. My wife’s 2020 iMac workstation I configured for her was $3,500 w/ a 10-core i9, 8GB RAM, 1TB, and 5700XT. And that’s because I upgraded the RAM myself w/ 64GB. A $4k CTO iMac is just that, a high-spec’d iMac, and lots of people have been fine with that so far. Of course, with unified memory lock-in, yeah, last years $4k iMac may indeed become this years $5k iMac.

The only reason I have suggested it might be called an "iMac Pro" is if it is really expensive in the base configuration - $3499/3999.

If they can bring it in at $1999/2499 - even if it only has 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD to do it - then I fully agree it will be an "iMac".

True, they wouldn’t enjoy the same economy of scale, as is. What do you think the odds are of a continued partnership with LG and their UltraFine displays to offset that? The smaller iMac takes on LGs 23.7” 4K display size, and LG updates (or adds to) their 27” 5K model with a 30” 5.5K or 32” 6K UltraFine that also gets used in the larger iMac.

The Intel iMacs and the Pro Display XDR panels are from LG and whether or not it is the Pro Display panel or something else, I fully expect the iMacs will continue to use LG panels. It is possible that LG could release a 32" UltraFine display using that panel - more so if Apple's new Thunderbolt Display uses the 24" panel (so LG would not offer a 24" UltraFine).

If you can make the same revenue with a $5k computer and a $15k computer, buying the $15k model simply means you wasted $10k on an expensive toy.

And if you can't make the same revenue with a $5k computer, you may not buy the $15k model, but you would buy one more expensive than the $5k computer.

Again, I am not arguing that Apple would release an expensive iMac Pro just to "soak" prosumers/enthusiasts. Those folks are perfectly happy to "soak" themselves via Apple's BTO upgrade pricing.

What I am arguing is that some of the components people are wishing/hoping the "big brother" iMac model will have could be very expensive. And then you need to add Apple's retail margin on top of that, and that is at least 25% and likely closer to 35%.

If we were presuming the "big brother" iMac would have the same 27" 5K display or (*shudder*) a 32" 4K display, then I would have said nothing because it would have been easy to hit a $1999 price for the entry model. But when people assume Apple can magically pull 90% of the retail cost out of the Pro Display XDR by "just getting rid of the stuff non-pros don't need" so it can be used in an iMac for the same price of 5K panel, I am going to challenge that.

I think the 6K might be deceiving so will probably better to talk about ppi instead of 6K.

Agreed dpi is important as that defines Retina in Apple's terminology and for an iMac display, 218dpi is the current standard.

That being said, you need the 6016 by 3384 pixels of the Pro Display XDR to hit that (216ppi). A 5K display at that size would only be 185dpi, which is also what a 24" 4K display at 3840x2160 is.

Mac OS wants to set my 4k 32 inch screen to 1920x1080... So it may set scaling automatically, but that doesn't mean it's any good at it. edit: for good measure, here are screenshots.
I just wanted to say that I like your wallpaper. Do you mind sharing the link for it?

I wasn't talking about Apple's claim, I was talking in general. Ok, I know what you are referring to but the stylus was in relationship to iPhone.

Touch is not happening until Apple makes a device that will go to flat surface. iMac (in this case) would need to be able to have a stand that would allow you to drop the monitor to be flat (or almost flat) - maybe like the studio.

Otherwise its not happening ever. Why? Damn, try to use your hand in the air for a bit and you will find out soon enough.

I find it funny that people keep bringing this up without even thinking about it. Its like they want a feature they think its cool but if they would actually get it they would complain that its useless or they would not use it.

Any sensible person, that knows anything about ergonomics, knows that you just simply can't have touchscreen on the form factor we have now. Its borderline stupid!

Just because I can merge 2 products together doesn't mean I get better product or better experience.

Just like Jobs said: "People have no idea what they want" and this is so true here.

BUT, lets take the stupidity of this never ending topic coming up and lets just consider the implication.

Ok, you are an artist that can benefit from touchscreen input as you draw etc. So, you buy an iMac that can also fold flat to be used as a tablet style thing.

Now, you setup your desk as ergonomic so you have the right screen height, angle on your wrist, elbow, knees etc. You make sure you are setup correctly because health is the most important thing when working long hours and ergonomics can literally break you if you do it wrong.
Ok, so you have that all setup and you do emails, check things on the net etc. and then you get a task to draw something so now you put your screen down and start adjusting your ergonomics AGAIN! Removing keyboard out the way etc. just so that the screen is in the right position, keyboard and mouse is not in the way etc.

All this nonsense just so that you can have 2 devices in one? Really?
Sorry, but no. Its not a good idea and it will most likely NEVER be!

In the example above is far more convenient to have either wacom screen tablet on a side and do it there (like most artists in studios) or you have a separate iPad which is setup in an ergonomic way and it doesn't slow your workflow.

Messing around the table all the time is just a compromise that is frankly not needed.

So, yeah, I find it funny that people still desire this insane idea.
Sorry but not sorry. :-D
Why are you implying that I think apple will just throw a touch screen on the current form factor and call it a day? lol Of course apple would design some additional functionality into it to improve the ergonomics. But I'm glad you felt it was necessary to expand in-depth on that. haha

But let's summarize reasons for vs against:
For - merging cpus and os code, transitioning a lot of elements and UI of MacOS to match iOS, bringing features found on iPad OS to MacOS, larger elements designed to be more accessible to touch, ability to run iPad apps on the computer.

Against - ergonomics of current devices, smaller nitch use, Freida's opinion

Neither of us truly know for sure. I don't think it's that crazy to think they might branch into a touch computer. Maybe not the entire line, but the iMac could make sense. Redesign with the functionality similar to the Surface Studio for creators. Even providing a special edition with a touch interface IMO would be a good idea. I'd be completely shocked if Apple doesn't have one in the next 5 years. Surface Studios are a great computer right now for teachers/intructors. With online learning, the ability to have one device that can be annotated and drawn on during zoom recordings or projected on the room during normal times without buying a specialized touch screen is great.

Ah, yeah if the base config was $3,499+ they might name it that way. But I think they're going to try and keep the large iMac base config to under $2,499. Maybe $2,299? For a 30-32" iMac? I'd be ok with that.

Well, these are not opinions. It's called logical deduction, as a result of paying attention.

Very often rumors that only understand part of the puzzle and not the full context create a completely false impression in people. We've been hearing about AirTags for so long now that people are convinced they must be coming. Add to that the fact that: they most certainly are a real product. Just not one Apple created for commercial sale.

When Apple announced the Find My network last week, along side a slew of third party products with support for it, including AirTag-like products, we saw the fruit of these efforts for the last 1.5-2 years. The Find My network is the product. It wouldn't get casually announced via press release and then a little plastic Apple branded tag that goes along with it gets announced at an event a week later. Nope. If AirTags were intended for release, they would have been alongside the Find My network. Clearly, AirTags are something Apple created primarily for the development of the Find My network. Maybe they were also considered as a possible commercial product, until they realized it contributes nothing unique to the space. The other new trackers being announced are the same thing. The Find My network is their unique contribution.
How are you doing right now?
