Damn, that chin and bezels! What a deal-breaker!

Doesn't even appear to be 16:9... :(

Sure enough, they replaced ALL of the 21.5" configs. No more new small iMacs for a while now, definitely no design changes for the next few years or so...

Well I love the new design and the retro colours. Really reminiscent of my first indigo iMac DV+. Let’s see what upgrades are available, but my wallet is now primed and ready to go.

Yes they have replaced the 21.5" units, but if you listened the the presentation you would have heard them say the 24 is only slightly bigger. I have plenty of space on my desk, and extra inch or two is not a deal breaker.

Sorry, but the chin is a must have..the bezels are slim enough...they are 60% slimmer than the current one

The iMac got updated for consumers. And the fact that it calls it the 24" iMac is good. Looks like we're gonna be getting the Big iMac at WWDC with an M1X, phew.

I would have been disappointed to get a big iMac with just an M1.

It's still 16:9. My only complaint is I really looked forward to a space gray color to match my setup. I recently bought a CTRL Drop keyboard.

3 steps forward, 1 step back.

I have mixed feelings -- we have waited a LONG time for this. Hopes were high and specific. This is very good, but there are serious caveats. It will be perfect for certain target audiences, though not for me. And, we can expect certain decisions to be locked in now for an even longer time. "So Close" can somehow be more disappointing than abject failure ...

Like: New chip, thin enclosure, new colors, improved display, speakers, mics, and camera.

Dislike: Chin, white bezels, no all-black option, limited and fixed RAM, very limited ports, no face ID.

Some of this will be resolved with the coming 32", and the next-gen M chip. This is a staged rollout, which is understandable.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet: It still has the same external display limitations as other M1 devices, and it still has a max of 16GB memory.

So I just realised my GF had one of the new iMac prototypes on her desk

Yeah its crazy the max is 16GB of RAM. I have a 2013 27" iMac that has 32 GB and its 8 years old. Why is the RAM amount so low on something 8 years newer?

I would have been discussing to get a big iMac with just an M1.
we already discussed this...lemon and I already told that the 16" and the bigger imac will get the second gen 5nm chip and it will be called different.
But...this M1 from the imac can be cloked higher...with the 2 fans it has the cooling we will have to wait and see

Sorry, meant to say disappointed, not discussing.

The only direction it looks good from is the back (if you ignore the stand) as there are some nice colours (although I would like an option for something more professional such as black). I hate the white bezels (preferably black like most Apple products, but the same as the back would be OK), and would like them smaller. The pastel chin and stand look terrible. Looks wise I cannot think of worse from Apple.

Functionally, a separate power brick is madness in an all-in-one. The presentation went on about the improved webcam, but then showed an iPad with the same chip, but a far more advanced webcam.

Performance I think is also not good. Only having the same chip as the base models is not enough for all the pixels in the built-in display, and even the lowest iMacs always had far more performance than the base Mac laptops. It doesn't bode well for the larger iMac, which I think will be one step higher than the lower. That won't be enough.

Only one good thing, which will rarely be seen, but many bad things. I am very underwhelmed.

Yeah its crazy the max is 16GB of RAM. I have a 2013 27" iMac that has 32 GB and its 8 years old. Why is the RAM amount so low on something 8 years newer?

Because it is on-package mobile RAM and those type of RAM chips are much smaller in capacity than desktop/laptop DRAM as the focus has been smartphones and tablets with 4GB and 8GB modules - this is why M1 has 8GB (2x4GB) and 16GB (2x8GB) capacities.

16GB production started in 2019 but it looks like yields are still low. So I expect iMac Pro will have 32GB as an option, but it will probably be very expensive - possibly more than the $600 Apple charges now. Which is why I expect it will launch at 16GB to keep the price at least vaguely reasonable.

I am not sure 32GB modules have made it out of initial prototyping production. Even if they have, I expect yields are low and prices are ridiculous. So if 64GB is an option...well, expect it to be four-figures...

Good thing I wasn't planing to upgrade anytime soon because those colorful jokers look more junky the longer I look at them.

A non-standard 4.5K display resolution impossible to match with an external monitor?
A miserly mere (2) USB ports on the base model?
A +$200 up charge for (4) USB ports?

The M1 mini and 2020 5K are looking better and better.

Ok, here is my summary:

The event was much better than I expected to be fair.
They showed tons of stuff. I'm glad we finally got over the stupid airtags. The commercial for that was great, loved it.
AppleTV looks good - love the calibration feature
iPad Pro 12.9 - awesome machine - wallet ready. Shame about the price increase and would love to know if its Aluminium Series 7000 but I guess we will find out soon.

iMac - WELL, this is a major disappointment. I mean the design is cool but the execution is terrible.

Here is why:

- the colours are cool but the chin's different colour maybe not so much
- not adjustable

but the MAJOR issue I have with this is the bloody white bezels. That will be so DISTRACTING visually that I have no idea what was apple thinking about. Have they never used white iPad before? Those white bezels were so distracting (especially when watching a movie) that I'm just baffled how could they come up with this. Major disappointment there.

Anyway, as expected, 27" wasn't updated which is actually a good thing here as M1 is not good enough for the big iMac. The fact that there is no M1X (even for the new iMacs) is telling me that there won't be M1X. Instead, Apple might go for M2. Either way, I'm very happy that we have to wait for the big iMac as this would be a disastrous if we got 32" (or so) with M1.

So, this gives me hopes for WWDC but at the same time, it feels that maybe WWDC is too early. Perhaps the big iMac will have to wait till Oct/Nov?

Good news, for anyone who still needs the $1099 price point the 21.5" 2017 is still for sale! o_Ohttps://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/imac-imac/21.5-inch

I like my silver iPad Pro 10.5 with white front. For the consumer iMac crowd at which these are aimed, white won't be a hindrance at all IMO. Not a fan of the chin though. Good spot for sticky notes though I guess. :D

I'm still expecting M1X or whatever they call it. As in an M1 generation SoC but with more CPU and GPU cores, and more addressable RAM. I wonder what the RAM limit will be. 64 GB?

There literally is no reason not to allow MacOS on this iPad Pro but "we want you to buy a laptop as well LOL"
You mean except the fact that they are completely different devices with completely different input methods? Yeah, minus that little detail.

Well you have to wait for the iMac Pro now to get something in black.

I hope you're right since WWDC is soon, but personally I really doubt it. I think M1X or M2 is pretty far off still. I think Q4 for new MacBook Pro's with M1X/M2, and next year some time for iMac Pro.
