I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet: It still has the same external display limitations as other M1 devices, and it still has a max of 16GB memory.
Yeah you're the first to mention it. Lol.

Clearly, this is just like the other M1 Macs. Absolutely base model for consumer level users.

All manner of Pro and Pro-sumer will need to wait for whatever comes later.

A non-standard 4.5K display resolution impossible to match with an external monitor?

Has to be in order to be Retina. The 21.5" iMac 4K was also non-standard at 4096x2304 compared to industry 4K, which is 3840x2160.

At least we will have the new Apple Thunderbolt 4.5K Display to pair with it.

A miserly mere (2) USB ports on the base model?

The M1 SoC appears to only support 2xUSB4 considering that is what we see on the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini. So they have to add a separate USB controller chip for the 2 USB-C ports the higher-end models support.

A +$200 up charge for (4) USB ports?

Well $200 for the controller chip to support those 2 USB-C ports, 1Gb Ethernet, TouchID, and an 8th GPU Core.

Just want to say... 409 pages for this ?!
It's over now. We have our redesign. Case closed.
That is actually much nicer than what they showed today. The Apple logo missing is a weird choice. It looks so naked.
But the black bezels are much much nicer
Totally agree with this. Don't like the chin or white bezels, but glad they kept the same aspect ratio (thanks @Lava Lamp Freak). Will probably buy it after some thought. Which config will you guys be getting? The dual-core i5 21.5" iMac? ;)

Was hoping for an "iMac Pro Mini" more or less.

True, but I was hoping for an iMac that would match the 24" 4K LG monitor. Apple isn't a trend setter if nobody follows. Oh well.
That Thunderbolt 4.5K... is that a real thing I missed or optimistic hope?

That might be true for the MBA and MBP but the M1 Mini already includes everything on the top 24" iMac except the TouchID keyboard and display. This has to be a deliberate price differentiating gimmick to squeeze an extra price tier out of one chip.

I'm not getting this toy as it would be almost a downgrade for me.

I'm waiting for the real iMac update (32") which will hopefully be more PRO than these toys.

The iPad Pro though is awesome. Can't wait to test it out and so happy it doesn't have a bloody OLED. This will be one awesome device. :)

It's actually pretty funny... none of us called Apple releasing it with an unchanged M1 chip, right? How could we have been so blind? ?

It's a frustrating release. On one hand, I'm still using a ten-year-old computer. On the other, nothing about this new iMac says here's the long-term solution for your professional needs. WWDC also feels suspiciously close now... especially with previous rumours that we'd see an AR-focused event. I get the feeling that we won't see an M2 iMac until the fall. I am disheartened.

Also... the white bezels. If I were briefly on the fence about ordering... this has planted my feet back on the ground.

M1 in an iMac is a toy for ME. So yeah, I won't be getting that. M1 in iPad is another story. :)

Right now we don't have 32" iMac as they just simply don't have the tech yet to make it as fast as the current one.

So rightly so, in comparision I call them a toy :)

But hoping WWDC will give us M2 or some "pro" AS

M1 is not a toy, nor would an "iMac Pro Mini" be a toy. :(

Most people found out it would come with M1 chip merely just a couple of days before release.

Performance I think is also not good. Only having the same chip as the base models is not enough for all the pixels in the built-in display, and even the lowest iMacs always had far more performance than the base Mac laptops. It doesn't bode well for the larger iMac, which I think will be one step higher than the lower. That won't be enough.
The 24" M1 iMac can drive it's built-in 4.5K display plus up to a 6K @ 60Hz external display. The M1 is currently blowing away the top-spec 27" iMac in Geekbench single-core, and not too far behind in mulit-core. It's not hurting for performance.

Mac laptops have always been limited by thermal design constraints. These constraints are significantly reduced with the new M1. So now Mac laptops can be on a level playing field. It's not that this 24" M1 iMac isn't getting a performance increase, it is. But the performance increase for the 13" MBP and Air is significant now that the thermal straight-jacket is off.

If they went with the LG 24" monitor panel it would not have been Retina so there would have been a reduction in sharpness. It also would have been effectively 1920x1080 when run in HiDPI Retina mode while this display will be 2240x1260 - offering 17% more usable display area than a 24" 1080 HD display.

I'm sure that extra USB controller cost Apple only a few bucks and it probably costs more in inventory to have two boards than one - but this is Apple and they are masters of nickeling-and-dimeing people.

We assumed it would not have M1 since it was not launched in October with the other M1 Macs. But I wonder, on reflection, if they intended to do so. We'd been hearing rumors of a 24" iMac with "iPad Pro design attributes" since at least March of 2020 and most of us expected it to launch last year. So I wonder if COVID threw a wrench in the validation and production plans and it had to be delayed until now.

I kind of like it without the logo! I think the only thing I don't like about today's unveiling is the color choice and the size of the display. But hey, I don't think we are the audience for this iMac :)

it's just a matter of time before we get black bezels, with aluminum and space grey (I hope).

One thing that struck me in these new keynotes is the change in narrative from design > product marketing. Where are the designers that are proud to sign their work?

Definitely the feeling I got from John Ternus when he reminded everyone that they were on a 2-years transition. Tempering expectations for the Pros. I am also on my current computer last's legs and don't think I can wait till the fall. I hope WWDC brings good news.

Mac mini M1 with 32" monitor no need to wait and doesn't cost much you can always sell that thing later. I think the fall most likely for big iMac or closer to Christmas. Expecting M1X as June show because it needs to beat Current model on graphics otherwise why buy it !!

I'm fine with it having an M1 chip, and I'm fine with it being 24", but I'm not fine with it having white bezels. I avoided the initial iMac LCD releases because they were white. I was very happy in 2007 when they released it in aluminum with black bezels, and I bought the 24" immediately upon release. Then in 2009 I bought the 27" upon release. Now I have the money and am ready to purchase an iMac after not having one for nearly 10 years, and they go back to white.

Of all the things I worried about going wrong today, I never considered that it would be reverted back to white bezels.

Not a fan of the white bezels, but I want one.

I bought the base model M1 Mini, and a £400 27” 4K display. I wish I’d have waited - an extra £200 would have got me an integrated iMac with a superior display, webcam, better speakers and (presumably) without the display-waking issue that the Mini has.
