Mac mini M1 with 32" monitor no need to wait and doesn't cost much you can always sell that thing later.
I just got the call that my M1 mini is ready for pickup. Once the M2 machines roll out, I can use this to run the home theatre. Problem solved.

Also, I’m very much hoping I can get my 2011 iMac to work in target display mode for now. ?

I feel like this is very much the 'family' iMac. I mean I'm sure its going to be a powerful machine, but I'm expecting more of a professional spin from the eventual full size model. A professional finish, maybe a space grey option with black bezels, and hopefully a few more ports. I love the silver option, but that white bezel isn't great. And I actually kind of hate the chin more without the apple logo there. In a way it makes me realize how great the iMac design has been the last 10 years. It really is a classic.

And as much as I do enjoy apple pushing new connections forward, it seems a bit odd to offer an iMac with no SD card reader or USB-A. Especially considering so many keyboards and mice still ship with USB A receivers. It's a nice machine, and I'm actually shocked how cheap it is considering that nice display. If Apple silicon has proven anything to me so far, it's that maybe Apple can keep prices a little more reasonable (I'm dreaming I know).

I've been waiting so long for this redesign that I don't know what to say now.

It is an evolution that I needed and in general terms I like it.

I like the colors, it's a nice reinterpretation of the 1998 iMac colors. Yellow is the one I would choose.

The white frames look a bit strange to me, and I also miss a more "traditional" version.

I understand that it has the chin because it has all the components there, but I would have left the logo there or at least put "iMac" written, it would not look so extremely heavy that area, which for me is the worst of the design, and not because it has it (in the end it is there by necessity), but because it looks like an empty hole and lost aesthetically, and if you at least put a logo there, it would be something better in my point of view.

I'm disappointed that it doesn't have Face ID. This team is the ideal to wear it. At least, surprisingly for me, because I would never have thought about it, they have put Touch ID on the keyboard, although I still have reservations about how they will have solved the security issue, even if it connects with the "Security Enclave" of the M1.

Conclusion. I'm looking forward to a 32" yellow iMac with Face ID. I guess I will have to wait at least 3 more years. ?

I thought Apple couldnt drop the ball with this after so long in the coming however I dont like the two tone, the colours make it look like a kiddy device, and the chin to me looks even worse than it did before, which takes some doing.

After introducing the colours on the webpage, Apple gloats about how thin the iMac is. On a desktop it really is incredible that Apple sees this as some sort of trophy. I couldnt care less how thin or thick a desktop is (within reason - I dont want CRT depth). Also disappointed its an M1 and not the next level up.

Ive waited a long time for this and thought buying would be easy but now I dont know whether to buy a mini and a 4K monitor. I read the mini has a waking issue - is this widespread? Does anyone recommend a mini and a 4K over this iMac? I dont need speakers, true tone display, webcam etc. I intend to use for logic pro X.

I just wanted to say that I like your wallpaper. Do you mind sharing the link for it?

I got tired of waiting for the iMac so I bought an M1 MacBook Air last month and a 24" UltraFine Display to go along with it. Waking from sleep was an issue until I realized I just had to press the enter key after pressing another key to wake it up. So it was two key presses to wake from sleep rather than one. That was every time waking from sleep. I turned off touch ID thinking maybe it was waiting for me to authenitcate, but that didn't help. So it could be related to issues people have reported with the Mini.

I also had a defect with the stand on the UltraFine -- it was actually crooked on the base, and not adjustable -- so I returned it and decided to continue waiting for the iMac.

Now I don't know what to do. I thought about buying a 27" UltraFine 5k, but I've read about a lot of issues. I already have a 27" 4k, but the pixel density just isn't good enough to me. So now I guess I'm back to waiting for WWDC.

It's actually pretty funny... none of us called Apple releasing it with an unchanged M1 chip, right? How could we have been so blind? ?
Actually, what I was saying was entry level M1 24" iMac with higher end M1X 24" and 29" models.

Now after the fact, I'm changing it to say there will be no 24" M1X model, but I still think there will be a 29" M1X model.

I bought an M1 mini and a 32 inch LG Ultrafine and it's a great combo. I never have any problems waking from sleep.

The lack of logo is weird, but that's one of those things you'll get used to. If they hadn't had logos on the chin for more than a decade we'd think one that added it would be similarly strange.

Overall the entire thing is in many ways a throwback to a more whimsical time at Apple. The white bezels remind me (favorably) of the G4 and G5/Intel iMacs, although the proportions certainly favor the modern one—even at the time the G5 looked chunky and really was too heavy-looking for its design.

If it had a plain white front like its antecedents, I think it'd look a bit more clean and unified, but I get that when you're selling a color product the person using the device is gonna expect to see some of it, and making the entire front enclosure that color would have been a really bad idea (which is the reason I think more than anything we ended up with a chin—make the thing thicker and stick it behind, and you're left with the only potential color being the foot.)

I heavily expect the larger iMac to have black bezels and/or a more muted "pro" color scheme like the iPhones Pro, but I'll be curious to see if there are any more significant differences besides a port or two and higher performance thresholds.

Two things I paid attention to:
  1. The 24" iMac maxes out at 16 GB RAM. The models it replaced had an option for 32 GB and supported 64 GB with third-party upgrades. Is this a sign that the initial high-end iMac/MBP models may also not fully match the capabilities of the Intel Macs they replace?
  2. Apple may be constrained by their ability to design higher-end chips. Their internal prototypes were apparently not ready for production by the time the decisions about the 24" iMac were made.

Yes, I think they are perfect for the audience Apple is aiming for. Its the perfect student/family computer.

However, for us who need bigger screen and more power it just means we have to wait longer. I'm actually glad we didn't get the bigger iMac today. Getting M1 in a bigger iMac would be a disaster.
This is just perfect - entry level iMac with decent power for most users. Great machine.

Shame about the white bezels though.

I hope that WWDC will give us a sneak peak into the bigger brother

I think Apple will sell these as fast as they can make them. For the majority of Apple customers these will be perfect.

I don't get the fascination with bezels. Never once have the bezels of any monitor bothered me.

I was not so far off the marks this time. For the target group, this is a perfect match. I am surprised the M1 is not overclocked a little. At least it will not throttle.

The M1 performance is sufficient for what its target group. I will be buying one for work. It is 2X faster single thread and 1.26 X faster in multithreaded than my 8 core MP that decided to die on me. The aim for online video and making tutorial/teaching videos makes it a good buy.

Design? Where is Jony Ive??? Apple is taking a dangerous path here.

Now for the bigger iMac to get redesign. Will like to see colours there too.Had to settle for silver with my 27" iMac.

Like the pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, in fact all the colours of 24" iMac. Should now be difficult to choose. Hope the chin is reduced but seems highly unlikely that the logo will come back. That is for me is a let down - a big blank chin with no shining apple logo.

Still feeling happy with my decision to buy a 2020 27” but the 24” is for a different target market. I’ll be very interested in what Apple do with the bigger screen iMac latter in the year, but I’m unlikely to upgrade for a few more years at least anyway.

I can't use photoshop so don't ask me to make this better, this is the best i can do... I DIG IT

PS: if I can do this in 2 minutes, I am sure they have thought about it as well in Cupertino. I just think the chip is not ready yet so we have yet to see these (WWDC?)

PPS: I can do this all day on a Pro Display XDR in Cupertino if you want to hire me, Tim Apple

for your first point, I wouldn't necessarily put it as the ability to 'match the capabilities' of the intel Macs they replace.

RAM at the end of the day is a resource consumed by the machine and the development approach so far has been 'add more if needed' over 'maximise optimisation'.

I think heavier Rosetta 2 based softwares may suffer a bit, but Apple Silicon native apps should be fine.

I think we may see a future where the maxed out RAM on a macOS device is less than 64GB (Personally I think it's gonna max out at 32GB)

Why have more if you don't need it?

anecdotally, my 32GB i5 Mac mini has more stutters and lags than the M1 16 GB MBA on the same workload ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

a few thoughts about the new iMac:
1.) I would like the larger version, 30 or 32".
2.) The way it looks, you won't be able to expand the memory yourself in the future, which means higher purchase costs.
3.) No CardReader, no Ethernet in the case
4.) Colors, rather not mine, would have liked darker ones
5.) That's why I'm considering buying another 2020. Better safe than sorry.
