Waiting for next 12.9 (or whatever size the largest Ipad will be) inch iPad with Face ID. Love the bezeless IPX and find Face ID is very good. As long as Face ID can be used in landscape mode and I am sure this will happen I will want to get one. I use my iPad a lot for documentation creation, creating flow charts, as a presentation mode in small groups sessions, and so forth. Do some light video and photo editing also on IPad and prefer the larger canvass.

That entirely depends on your use case.

It may not be able to do everything that a laptop CAN do, but for me it does everything I use a laptop for...so I don’t have a laptop. I have an iPad and a desktop.
Oh yeah definitely, but I don’t think it can replace both a desktop and labtop unless all you use your computer for is email and watching cat videos

Yes, I look forward to eliminating the home button and having Face ID, which hopefully will result in more screen display and allow for more improvements with internal with battery with the reduction of the home button. My uses are primarily for work related tasks and productivity with editing.

No. I am a bit resistant in giving Apple my "face," so that's a big reason why I am not interested in Face ID; plus it will jack up the price of an already too expensive tablet.

For me, the iPad Pro has become invaluable for school, especially without internet access at work (I buy WiFi-only iPads). I use it to begin homework by marking up pdfs. I am learning to how to draw on it, but I will probably wait to upgrade again until I am closer to finishing my degree.

Also, incorporating face ID into the iPad is likely is Apples next move, because of the fact that is an iOS related device that will share similar components to the iPhone and being an Apple wants to eliminate the home button, it makes complete sense this will be their next transition.

My guess is that it's also how Apple will differentiate the iPad Pro from the 2018 iPad, now that the latter has Apple Pencil support.

I wonder what this means for the 2019 budget iPad, if Apple wants to eliminate the home button from their iOS devices altogether.

Heck Yes!
Laptop replacement
Have IPad Pro 1st gen 12.9. Need fresher design and bezel reduction and have money.

iPads are tools for me - I buy them when I see value for the things I do with them (which is pretty much my main computing device by now). Face ID wouldn’t be a deciding factor in my purchase.

I would also like to point out that this forum is full of people who use iPads for other tasks than media consumption- and no, they are not all teachers or drawing artists.

IPad Pro is a near guarantee to have ID since Ipad for $329 supports pencil now and even though RAM is better, Apple needs a new design and aspects to pay 1K+

I see the 2018 9.7 iPad similar to the iPhone SE, where they are the only two iOS devices that will have older technology to allow it to be a cheaper price point as entry level. Being Apple has not updated the iPhone SE, it’s difficult to say if they will retain the home button or not if its updated. Or, They retain the entry level iPad with older hardware and just update iPad Pro models with the latest technology to create a separation. If the SE is updated, I don’t believe it will be until later in 2019, at which point I think the home button will be eliminated.

Yes I'll be getting the next iteration of the iPad Pro simply because my current iPad is very old (iPad 3). I hope it has Face ID.

I'll use it mainly for regular stuff. Web, email, movies.

I use my iPad a lot (at home mostly, but occasionally away), & i'm due for an upgrade as the Air 2 chugs along these days.

Doesn’t the Air2 have same specs as the iPad 2017?
Almost.

iPad Air 2 pros:
  • fully laminated display
  • weight
  • thickness

iPad 5th gen (2017) pros:
  • battery life
  • single-core CPU performance

Multi-core CPU and graphics performance are more or less the same.

Yeah so Air2 should still be going solid because my iPad 2017 definitely does.

Does anyone think that, in order to include Face ID and not raise the price of the pro's they will use the same A10X and RAM as the current pro's?

Or, what kind of prices do you expect if they bump the hardware, use OLED screens, and include Face ID?

You don’t give Apple your ‘face’. The data is stored in the secure enclave and never leaves your device, just like your finger print ID.

Although I’m sure you’re right on your second point.

I believe FaceID requires minimum A11 Bionic in order to work. I don't think they'll switch iPads to OLED yet, though.

Ah, I didn't catch that A11 bionic part before.
If they don't use an OLED screen, how would they make the rounded corners like the iPhone X?

I don’t care about Face ID, but I look forward to the A12X, a better display and maybe more RAM, better traction for the Pencil.

I use my iPad Pro all day long, much more than I use the iPhone. I’ve noticed that in the last six months there is much more high quality software for the iPP and Pencil.

It's still a great device. I get a lot of App refreshes & switching between Apps isn’t that slick, especially now that I have the X. Keyboard pop up & use is also frustrating (delays), although I do use third party keyboards, so this may be my fault.

The 120hz screen of the new iPads & their smoothness is what appeals most. Hoping for more RAM/power in this years model.

So the 3D map of your face is not a scan? (Not trolling here, obviously I never understood what Face ID does other than needing your face to unlock the phone. The whole concept makes me uncomfortable).

The information about your face is stored as data points, not as a 3D model. Plus, it’s also on your device within a separate chip that’s different to the normal processor. I think your worry here is a bit unfounded.

I understand the reason of your worry and personally I wouldn’t want that either. I’m also into privacy and online security. If it was Google, I’ll definitely not be happy with such things but Apple does go that extra mile when it comes to user data.

I share kazmac’s concern. I understand the data is stored on the separate secure chip, but just because it’s safe now doesn’t mean it always will be. Everything is hackable, it’s just a matter of will and time. If/when that day comes I’m willing to deal with the consequences of my fingerprint being out there (partly because many organizations already have my fingerprint), but having my accurate 3D face out there is new territory with unknown potential dangers, and frankly just creepy. It’s like these companies that want your DNA in exchange for family history. No thanks. This is getting way too invasive.
