Will you leave the Apple ecosystem because of CSAM?

It's only a theory until it's later a fact. It's been done before. How many other forms of censorship began with the phrase 'Will somebody please think of the children?!'

This is not meant to be politic but with covid all the people who refuse to want masks or get vaccines are not thinking of the children. Just saying.

It is amazing to say the least. Oh well. I know this post will get deleted.

But they are. They’re placing their children’s (and children’s children’s) future freedom above some short-term risk. And as the parents, they should have the authority to make that decision.

I don't think it is that simple. I am vaxxed. I wear masks when necessary. I don't agree with what apple is doing.

When Apple said "These efforts will evolve and expand over time" I didn't realize they would move so fast!

Did you?

Good thing I'm fast too. I ditched Apple within days after the CSAM announcement. In just the last 24 months I had spent nearly $5k on Apple devices. Leaving never crossed my mind. I had been a Mac addict for my whole life.

Today I'm running Pop OS on my brand new System76 Lemur Pro. Upgraded my mouse and keyboard as well! My Mac, formerly beloved, now gathers dust. Once you disable iCloud it becomes a lot less of an "ecosystem" and it's just a bunch of shiny devices. Recommend this as a first step for those who want to wean off Apple.

Now that this is real -- what's next?

Why ditch them so quickly after their CSAM announcement? Got something to hide, buddy?…

Yes, definitely. From a Cypherpunk's Manifesto:
Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn't want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn't want anybody to know.

Patel is a talentless nasty piece of work that unfortunately has an office in this shambles of a government and I would not trust her if she were to tell me the sun will come up in the morning, I had a quick read of the article linked, and it is an opinion piece and seems to mention csam without a clue to the rest that is going on.

UK Cons government has been after back doors into the cloud for years because "terrorists", I think she mentions this particular thing as it was probably flagged up by an aid but does not pick up on the work done by other providers. The bar is low in this government for smarts.

Any mention of being world beating from this government is usually a lie (as in quoted article). The biggest fear with this new bill is press freedom and end to end and what is in the cloud. csam was touted long after the cons went down this road and I am not sure how it would benefit them especially if they cannot rely on Apple letting them in.

I don't have anything to hide, I just don't want to see the U.S. and other countries do as China does and spy on their citizens or initiate some type of social credit system. Is that so hard to understand?
Yes, apparently it is hard to understand. It seems like it's something hard to explain to folks who don't get it though. Wish I had better tools.

People who drive with a phone in their hand aren't thinking of the children, or anyone else around them. My risk of someone running a red light and T-boning me at an intersection is astronomically higher than contracting COVID, mask/vaccine or not. It's on the local news every day with multiple people's lives being turned upside down (or worse) because of either impatience or distracted driving.

Has there been studies for the detrimental health effects of persistent mask wearing such as reduced O2 levels or increased contaminant load for what is trapped on the inside of the mask? I know I personally had a brain fog and lack of motivation that took a couple months of no mask wearing to shake.

It's about risk assessment. With Apple's scanning system, since it's well pointed out that this won't be very effective at CSAM detection because, among other things, it's easy to avoid, it must be good at something else. Since Apple has put themselves in the middle, they can only really verify that the database isn't being abused by their sources once accounts are flagged. And, since they are visual derivatives (is that not reversing the hash?), that's not a lot of protection. So, there is ripe potential for folks that innocently save pictures from the internet getting put through the wringer because some automated system accused them of something and human reviewers didn't accurately vet the report. It's like the video I watched last night of a guy riding his motorcycle, having a bunch of other motorcycle riders fly past him at way above the speed limit, but the guy doing the speed limit gets pulled over and put in handcuffs. Guilty until proven innocent. He would've spent time in jail had he not recorded his ride.

It's not whether or not I trust Apple, I don't trust the database providers to refrain from abusing the system. Apple put themselves in a very vulnerable position with their own system and stabbed all their users in the back. At face value, it'll only catch those that collect CSAM, and only old stuff at that. These people need help, but hopefully having CSAM is enough to keep them from doing actual harm to children. Apple's announcement, if the situation on iCloud is as bad as they make it seem, hurts Apple and all Apple users, and creates more demand for new, unknown content, causing harm to MORE children, not less. Industry-standard approaches and good, old-fashioned police/detective work actually go after the people making and sharing new content...as in, the ones actually doing harm to children.

It doesn't make it right to put this system on-device. Apple can already see everything in our iCloud Photo libraries (they hold the encryption keys), why go through all this hassle? E2EE iCloud isn't even a good enough answer. If Apple is worried about CSAM being hosted on their servers, that implies it's being shared with other people. Sharing photos with other users on iCloud necessarily breaks E2E encryption (otherwise, the people you share it with can't see the photos). Scan the stuff that is shared directly on-server and leave the endpoint devices alone.

Yeah, I have a lot to hide from people that have no business of knowing. None of it's illegal.

Stab me in the back, I want nothing to do with you (general statement, not directed at anyone).

I pay Apple for iCloud to keep my devices in sync and backed up. With their business revolving around privacy, it should be a reasonable expectation that my data isn't under constant scrutiny (from people or AI).

I have free Dropbox storage. While I can assume that the costs are covered by paying users, I only store stuff on Dropbox that I intend to share with the public, or stuff that if leaked, isn't going to turn my life upside down.

A video Well done! Look at the last terrorism act in NewZealand : police knew, followed the guy for months.
He did it anyway 😞
Unless I'm mistaken, you can't be legally arrested and convicted for thinking of committing an act of terrorism. You have to have physical evidence for intent to carry out an act. A bunch of pictures on a corkboard could be argued as circumstantial evidence unless they also find explosives or something of that nature. There's a fine line there as well, making the difference between thwarting an act of terrorism or arresting somebody for wrongthink.

I just saw a top of the line Motorola that I liked, it has some sort of computer mode, you attach it to a KVM and it works as a computer.

An interesting approach, and one that could possibly be handy for a lot of people.

I don't know who came up this idea orginally, but I first heard of it as a feature planned for Ubuntu Touch. The idea was that when the phone was connected to a monitor, it would provide a full, normal Ubuntu desktop, and when detached it would use a mobile mode.

Has anyone seen whether ios15 is clear of the spyware yet? I’m in trust but verify mode, don’t have issues turning iCloud back on and downloading 15 but I would like to see confirmation…. I actually want to verify every update going forward but we need a way to do this other than just waiting on tech articles. I went to eff.org but nothing there giving green light or red light

If by „spyware“ you are referring to the CSAM scanning software, no, it’s not part of iOS 15.
