MS's Windows 11 is terrible. Win 10 is much better and why many Windows users are staying with Win 10 until we can't.
So much wasted screen in the opening picture if that's what MS is going to do with Win 12.
Darn MS is actually creating problems when there aren't much as Win 10 is relatively stable but is slowly copying Mac OS to compete when it doesn't have to as the demographic audiences are different.
If MS does make Win 12 look like Mac OS, then it'll make it a 'little' easier for Win users to migrate to Macs but it won't since many business software are still made for Windows only and No Mac versions so it's still a No Go for many Win users.

I feel like the real nadir was the "I'm a Mac / I'm a PC" ads. Those were just embarrassing cheerleading without substance. I'm all for a deep-dive into technical or practical comparatives to determine the best choice for a given task, but that sort of smarmy schoolyard nonsense is just beneath adults.

Given how collaborative all these companies now are (Apple works freely with Microsoft and Google and others at the engineering level, and vice versa), and how ubiquitous platforms all platforms now are, I'd like to think "Mac vs. PC 3" won't reach the same level of ridiculousness, but you never know.
> without substance

Someone didn't use Vista and it shows.

This is why I love Stage Manager while everyone else hates it lmao.
Stage manager is worse than any other macOS multitasking features while deliver nothing new. It should’ve never existed, unless apple wants To dumb down macOS into a glorified iPadOS.
these just feel like reskin band aids
Windows 11 is the reskin of windows 10, which is a reskin of windows 8, which is a reskin of windows 7, which is a reskin of windows vista, which is somewhat a reskin of windows xp, which is a reskin with much better under the hood improvements of windows 9x.
just looks like a linux distro
Linux can be customised to look into any OS so this is nothing new.

So at Ignite 2022 Microsoft had a little teaser for Windows 12 and uh...well see for yourself:

windows-12.jpg

They're not even hiding it anymore. Aside from the lack of a menu bar and that ugly Windows search at the top, it's straight up macOS.

You know what this means right? THE MAC IS BACK BABY! You know the Mac is good again if it's being directly copied again.

Welp get ready for Mac vs PC 3. It's coming.

Over a decade ago, Jony Ive tossed aside many little things that made an Apple product look like an Apple product, like replacing Lucida Grande as the OS X system font in favor of Helvetica Neue. I believe poor Jony had many sleepless nights over the Windows Phone’s wispy Helvetica Neue-esque font that he stole from Windows when he ruined, I mean, revised iOS and OSX after getting his grubby mitts, I mean, hands on control of Apple software. So now Windows 12 has stolen from Mac OS which stole from Windows?

With a little luck, hopefully designers who are more genius and less self-serving than Jony might work Mac OS back to looking like…Mac OS?

That’s an interesting comment…I use search at least once an hour and I’ve never liked Mac’s search which results in a movable pop up that requires you to look elsewhere than you just clicked to start entering words. I didn’t mind the prior method where the window would appear just under the magnifying glass icon.

Two “improvements” in user interfaces over the past 10 years that I *hate* is hiding away often-used tools, and then the screen-jitter jump-scare where something you were just clicking jumps and moves to somewhere new you have to shift focus on, to start typing. I’m willing to be others use search dozens of times a day. What’s wrong with an “ugly search window” that lets you type up there right away, with out the screen shift jump scare, and get along with your business quickly. My desktop screen is for work/use, not art/looks. I’m always curious about “improvements” under the guise of “elegant aesthetics” with a noticeable negative trade-off, for me at least.

It looks a bit like an MacOS-inspired Linux desktop, but I personally don't find it so bad. The main problem I have is that a) Microsoft will surely find ways to screw it up and make me grind my teeth through a lot of little things and b) it will just add another layer of inconsistency to the Windows UI because they never find the time/resources to update old dialogs and go for a consistent UX (see also this article).

Honestly the window snapping is a million times better than the way you setup a Split View with Mission Control.

Ok top of that, sadly, windows has currently less bugs than any piece of software coming out of Apple.

I wouldn’t keep going with this crusade Mac vs windows. They don’t even do it themselves anymore!
Windows came a long way and Apple fell from a very high cliff. The differences are really minimal and about taste by now.
The only reasons why I still use macOS is because I love Apple’s hardware and because of the habit but I swear at it daily because there is not a single thing you do on macOS or iOS that doesn’t have a hiccup

I dunno, this is really more of an issue with the anti cheat software than Win 11. It's probably core isolation being turned on be default or something .

I've been running Win 11 since I was able to download the beta and I like it better than 10 in every case. It still has A LOT that needs to be improved but this is one of the most consistently designed versions of Windows that MS has managed to release, a low bar to be fair.

I don't know about performance in Win10 vs 11 other than to say "I can't tell any difference either way"

But... on Windows 10 I can actually play FIFA 23 since it's not encumbered by Secure Boot nonsense requirements

If folks want or care about Secure Boot for any myriad of reasons, great - but why are games bothering with checking for it?

It just turns me off completely.
Whether one is or isn't using Secure Boot seems way beyond the purview of a soccer video game

I feel like I am definitely one of the minority that likes to have the dock on the left side of the desktop (vertical).

Looks like tablet mode which is a hybrid of Android + Windows. Another low effort thread. There's more to an OS than just centered icons on the task bar.

The problem is that the UX designers that Microsoft is now employing are not Windows users, but Mac users (because otherwise you’re not a hip UX designer nowadays), and therefore they believe that Windows should look like what they’re used to, that is, like MacOS.

As a Windows user, I don’t know what I will do if they continue that route and when replacements like OpenShell will eventually stop working. It really sucks if you like classic Windows UX.
I've just installed windows 11 and I'm finding it not that bad surprisingly.

Have been running Classic/Open shell since win8. Might leave it stock until openshell is fully supported on win11.

It took me a few weeks to het really used to, but it's my Dock position now.
The only problem I keep having is, when in Photoshop or Illustrator, going with my cursor over the tools on the left side might make the Dock pop up.

Wish there was a way to fix that little problem

Its very solid. They did have some teething problems, but that is to be expected. Overall, its been fairly decent.

I don't expect major changes with win12 so that's why its a little confusing to come out with win12 so quickly.

I can't imagine upgrading my win10 gaming rig just yet.

I'll treat win12 like win11 and macos and update a year later.

Well the good news is Linux gaming is now viable thanks to SteamOS. So we're not trapped on Windows anymore
Linux gaming still has a long long way to go. With many games needing fixes by users to work, many games just not working, many games broken on each update, games with anti cheat not running

To be fair the new consoles are kinda poop lmao. The performance of the new gen PCs and the fact Xbox and Playstation games are available now, there's little reason to get a console anymore other than convenience or as a media hub.
Or that they’re very cheap for the performance. It will be many many years before you match the consoles for their price.

Oh, I'm in no hurry to consider windows 12, hell, my main desktop while on windows 11 is on 21H2. I heard of some issues with Nvidia drivers and games with 22H2, so I'm staying put for a while
